How do you give thanks? Perhaps it’s by sending a grateful message, making a surprise gift or practicing hospitality? November is the month when Americans around the world celebrate Thanksgiving; originally it was a harvest festival, but now it is a time when families gather together to enjoy a meal and each other’s company. Living in Hong Kong can make us feel isolated from loved ones. However, we can decide to connect with the community around us and contribute to helping others. There is much joy in giving, and the AWA provides many opportunities for members to give back in a variety of ways.

We were delighted to meet many of you at the Welcome Back Breakfast and to have you sign up for some of our volunteering programs. It is never too late to join or get involved. Expressing an interest doesn’t give you a ‘job for life’ but the chance to find out more, try it out and make new friends in the process. We know that within the AWA there is a huge amount of talent, skill and creativity, so let’s use it! As the well-known saying goes, “One person cannot change the world but we can change the world for one person.”

IN THINKING ABOUT what I would most like to do upon my second tour back in Hong Kong, I decided I wanted to learn more about Asian religion and philosophy and form a group of women to read and discuss my interfaith library of spiritually themed books. That was six years ago in 2011. Since then, I’ve participated in various spiritual and meditation retreats and workshops sponsored by Buddhists and Hindu groups, audited a comparative religions course at Hong Kong University, served on the organizing committee of the Hong Kong Network for Religions and Peace, facilitated the annual Baha’i World Religion Day, and founded the AWA Spiritual Literacy Group (SLG) which is now in its sixth year.

SLG is my favorite activity. Hong Kong is unique in its spiritual diversity on offer. In a relatively small geographical area there are temples, monasteries, churches, mosques, synagogues and other sacred spaces, along with its

corresponding interfaith population, all living in close proximity. And yet despite its rich diversity and closeness, there are relatively few platforms for meaningful interfaith engagement. SLG is unique and special in this way. In addition to reading a wide range of renowned spiritual authors across all faiths, SLG has attracted an international group of thoughtful and open women on diverse paths who engage in elevated and meaningful discussion. It’s refreshing, inspiring and educational. One long time member calls it getting her “spiritual spa.” We learn from our reading, and from each other, and create deep bonds of friendship and understanding in the process.

Fellow SLG member Mina Weight agrees. “[T]his morning of reading, discussing and meditation is the most uplifting part of my week. In a city of pressure, instant gratification and materialism, Kate creates an oasis of calm . . . . ” Mina also attests to SLG’s open and welcoming ethos, saying

“[W]e openly discuss spiritual philosophy, without fear of judgment.” That may be due to its diversity of membership. Members include those of Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim and agnostic belief systems from America, Australia, Britain, Canada, China (Hong Kong and Mainland), India, Japan, Pakistan, Norway and Taiwan. Its underlying principle is a belief in oneness, that at the core of each of our spiritual traditions is the same spiritual truth and fundamental message of inclusivity where all paths are respected and honored and there is unity in diversity.

Since its inception, SLG has discussed 16 books with spiritual themes from celebrated authors including the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Viktor Frankl , Sue Monk Kidd, Paramahansa Yogananda and Eckhart Tolle. SLG’s 2017 fall selection includes The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak, The Essential Rumi translated by Coleman Barks, The Seven Valleys and Four Valleys by Baha’u’llah and Seeking the Wisdom of the Heart – Reflections on Seven Stages of Spiritual Development by Patricia Roman McGraw, Phd.

SLG meets two mornings a month (generally the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month) and meetings include a short group meditation and interfaith devotional and discussion. For more information or to join, please contact me at [email protected].

THE HONG KONG TAXI is a familiar sight in our urban landscape. Part urban legend and part visual muse, it garners our attention and is something most of us have chanced. You know the ritual. You step out a bit, raise your hand and flag down a red and silver taxi. Shortly after we moved to Hong Kong, my 9-month old was conditioned to try and wave down any red car.

If you have ever wondered about the red and silver Toyota Comfort (of all names) so commonly associated with our city, you might be interested to learn some interesting facts about them. Taxis have been around Hong Kong since 1923 with the formation of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Taxi-cab Co, Ltd. Before then, you had the choice of a rickshaw, bus, or tram, or you could walk. The original fleet was about 30 imported Citroen Landaulette vehicles that within a year had to be replaced with a new batch, more formally engineered for Hong Kong’s uniquely vertical landscape. It was not until the 1970s that the current color scheme was introduced. Until then, a taxi could be any number of colors, makes or models (even a Mercedes-Benz), making it quite difficult to distinguish legal taxis from illegal ones; hence came the Transportation Department’s uniform color scheme announcement in 1974: “Silver for the upper half and red for the lower half,” in the hopes of eliminating the unlicensed taxis. The green New Territories taxi scheme followed in 1976 and, later, Lantau blue was established in 1983. It was during the 1980s and 90s that the Toyota Crown Comfort emerged as an especially popular

    Hong Kong TaxisBy Ashley Roukema

workhorse, shaping what is now an iconic symbol in urban transport.

The Hong Kong taxi is one topic of conversation that gets most people talking, perhaps because everyone has a story to tell. There are many positives to mention including relatively cheap fares, not having to worry about parking, not having to navigate the traffic ourselves, and an abundant supply so it is fairly convenient to flag one down. The Transportation Department reports there are 18,163 red taxis in Hong Kong. When compared to the reported 13,587 yellow taxicabs in NYC (2016), it’s easy to see that we are a taxi rich city.

Some taxis and drivers are a bit famous. We hear about THE singing taxi driver. (I have had a taxi driver sing to me but I’m not sure if he was THE one.) One taxi has the vanity plate TAXIKING, so be on the lookout for that one. And we all love to pass on terrible stories about “the worst ride ever,” “the strangest conversation,” “the rudest driver,” “the smelliest vehicle,” or “my lost phone or wallet.” With so much riding on this city symbol, is it any wonder Christmas ornaments, books, art, and souvenirs feature Hong Kong taxis? They represent the city as a common visual element. With the dynamic color scheme, very consistent labeling, and green sticker proclaiming the number of passengers, it’s easy to see why this mode of transport is so keenly associated with the city itself.

THE AWA ASIAN TOURS GROUP traveled to Tibet with an incredible group of 11 women from 10 different home countries. Crossing over two different mountain passes, the trip ranged in altitude from a low of 3656 meters (almost 12,000 feet) to a high of 5039 meters (16,532 feet). Even at the low point, the air was noticeably thinner, and every step felt like lead weights on your feet.

We started in Lhasa with the Potola Palace, which was the Winter Home of the Dalai Lama from 1645 until 1959, when the 14th Dalai fled to India. Later, we visited the Jokhang Monastery, which is considered the most sacred and important temple, as it is the home of the first Buddhist Statutes in Tibet. Hiking the pilgrim trail outside the Ganden Monastery, was a treat, made more special due to the treacherous, nine-kilometers of steep switch-back road we endured first.

The beauty of this country is only matched by the warmth and openness of its people. We were lucky. During a pit stop, we were invited into a local house. The lady of the house and her husband gave us a tour of their home, which could easily have appeared in World of Interiors. The visit was topped off with some home-brewed barley beer.

The crystal blue waters of the Holy Yamdrok Lake were a perfect place for a picnic lunch, complete with private loo tent, and then we started up the mountain passes. Even in September, there was snow on the peaks. And at the highest pass, we viewed the Karo La Glacier.

Arriving in the very picturesque old town of Gyantze, we happened upon a group of locals enjoying a local Tibetan dice/drinking/gambling game! Our final city before returning to Lhasa was Xigatzye, and the Tashilungpo Monastery, home of the Panchen Lama, 2nd only to the Dalai Lama.

Tibet Fun Fact: Tibetan women may have multiple husbands, but Tibetan men may only have one wife.

Surprise of the trip: The food! We had been warned that the food may not appeal to our palate, but we enjoyed amazing food at all of our stops, most of all in the family run home kitchen, with its walls charmingly covered with accolades from travelers spanning the globe.

The AWA Buddy Program pairs interested new members with a “Buddy” who helps answer questions about life in Hong Kong and/or the AWA. We always need new Buddies as new members join throughout the year. If this behind-the-scenes activity appeals to you, please contact Alison May at [email protected].

We welcome AWA members, both long standing and newbies, to get together and explore the SAR; to share experiences about life in Hong Kong along with the tips and wrinkles that just make it all a bit easier. We aim to help you build your friendship circles so the program is great for both brand new “Hong Kongers” as well as those of us who have been here a while and watched our first batch of friends and contacts head home or off to new pastures. THE COOKIE DRIVE is one of AWA’s longest standing holiday traditions. In early December volunteers bake and deliver cookies to the HK Red Cross, who then distribute them to 21 Red Cross Hospital Schools for their Christmas parties. The kids love our cookies, especially the decorated sugar cookies and gingerbread men. The children and their families love this tradition as they feel a generosity and warmth of spirit from the cookies we donate each year.

This year to make it easier for bakers we ask that you bake one or more batches of the following:

Sugar cookies - decorated or plain- (using half the sugar required in recipe)

Oatmeal cookiesGingerbread men - decorated or plainAnd of course if you want to participate in our cookie

drive but don’t have time to bake then you can buy some cookies to donate - All cookies are appreciated! We ask that you pack the cookies in Tupperware boxes, which makes transporting such large quantities much easier and also keeps the cookies from crumbling. We have some boxes for

cookies available in the AWA office if you would like to collect a box.

Please register on the AWA website under the volunteer page for the Red Cross Cookie Drive. Once you register you will receive more information like where to drop off the cookies (which will be in different areas in HK) and some recipes for you to try if you don’t have a favorite!

Thank you for your help and I hope that we will get many holiday bakers for this amazing event. Our goal is 3000 cookies!

We’ll explain the storied history of dragon boating, show you a bit of paddling technique, and then we’ll all go out on the water for an hour or so. The award-winning AWA Globe Paddlers will be assisting on the boats, so no worries that we won’t make it back to shore! We may even have a fun race or two. If you think it would be fun to get out on a dragon boat and try paddling, but aren’t looking to join a team, this is your chance. Just come with a willing attitude to meet some new friends, get wet, and have lots of fun! Family and friends over 16 years of age are welcome also. We supply the boat, paddles, and steersmen, along with some experienced paddlers. Afterward, we’ll have some drinks, beer, and bubbly on the beach. Last year many people stayed and we had a great shared dinner on the Stanley waterfront. There are showers and changing rooms at the Stanley Sports Centre. This popular activity will fill up quickly, so sign up early to avoid disappointment. No experience necessary and OK for any fitness level.

The opera will start at 1:30, and we will watch until the Name Listing Posting ritual begins at 2:00. In this special ritual, a group of Daoists (wearing ritual dress) and ritual representatives from the villages (wearing traditional long dress) will post a huge roll of paper with all the names of the villagers from all of the 26 member villages. Only those listed will get the sacred blessing from the rituals. Usually villagers do not understand nor care too much about religious rituals during the Jiao festival; however, since the Name List Posting is believed to be important to their fortune in the coming ten years, many villagers will attend and make sure their names are on the list and written correctly. Mistakes will be corrected on the spot. The price includes all transport in a private chartered bus and all tour guide fees. Please bring a packed lunch and drink.
