Learning Target
12/3/16 3
I can describe the results of blending of ethnic groups in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The people and cultures of Latin America are an
interesting blend of the native groups in the region
and influences of the countries that established
colonies there.
12/3/16 4
Language is the major factor that links together
all the countries of the area and makes it a
culture region.
12/3/16 5
Because most of the countries in Latin America were conquered by Spain, the Spanish language is
the most-spoken language of the region.
12/3/16 6
Since Portugal claimed Brazil,
Brazilians speak the Portuguese language.
12/3/16 7
12/3/16 8
After Spanish settlers moved into Mexico,
Central America, South America and the
Caribbean, ethnic groups began to blend.
12/3/16 9
12/3/16 10
Spanish people married American
Indians.
12/3/16 11
Their offspring were called mestizos, or
people of mixed European and Indian
ancestry.
12/3/16 12
Soon, black slaves from Africa were brought to Latin
America.
12/3/16 13
12/3/16 14
When they married Europeans, their
offspring were known as mulattoes, or people
of mixed black and European descent.
12/3/16 15
The major religion in Latin America is
Catholicism—again, brought by the
European settlers.
12/3/16 16
Many of the customs in the region reflect a mixture of ancient
Indian and European traditions.

Have you ever heard a country referred to
as “developed” or “developing”?
12/3/16 20
The development of a country refers
to its economic health.
12/3/16 21
12/3/16 22
A developed country has good public
services like clean water, electricity and
transportation.
12/3/16 23
Its citizens have good educations, are healthy, and
earn good salaries.
12/3/16 24
A developing country usually has poor public services, few good jobs,
poor healthcare, and largely uneducated
workforce.
12/3/16 25
One factor that has a huge effect on a
country’s economic health is the literacy
rate.
12/3/16 26
Developing countries typically have low
literacy rates, which greatly affects its
citizens’ standard of living.
12/3/16 27
A developed country has a good standard of living.
12/3/16 28
A developing country often has a
poor standard of living.
12/3/16 29
IF YOU CAN READ,YOU CAN LEARN!
12/3/16 30
If you can learn, you can improve your
work skills, and get a better job that pays a
better salary.
12/3/16 31
If you have a better salary, you can improve your
standard of living.
12/3/16 32
A country that improves the literacy rate among its citizens will improve the standard of living within that country and improve
its economy.
12/3/16 33
Educated and skilled workers are an
important factor in a country’s economic
growth.
