Congratulations to to the
ManawatuGolf Club
from the team at Manawatu Toyota
Clubhouse one of the best
Come on in: The towering entrance to the new clubhouse at the Manawatu Golf Club.
When the Manawatu Golf
Club opens the doors of itsnew clubrooms thisweekend, it will mark the
start of a new era.The clubhouse development project,
which had been on the backburner forabout a decade, has resulted in one ofthe top golfing facilities in the country.
The new clubhouse is available forhire, for a range of social occasions, throughout the year.
The picturesque setting of the golfcourse makes it ideal for weddings andother social events, for which there areon-site caterers who offer a variety ofmenu options.
The club can also cater for businessfunctions and conferences during theweek, and welcomes inquiries fromanyone looking for a suitable venue.
As the opening of the new clubhouseis an opportune time to increase theclub’s membership, an open day isbeing held on Sunday to giveinterested members of the public achance to inspect the first-classfacilities.
Work on the $2.3 million building, carried out by Humphries Construction, has taken eight months. Overall, thecost of the project is put at $2.7 million.
The new clubhouse is on the site ofthe existing clubrooms, 75 percent ofwhich were demolished.
The large, purpose-built facilityincludes a cafeteria and a large lounge. There is also a catering servery, servicedby a commercial kitchen, and a bar.And finally, there is a breath-takingview of the course that allows membersto keep an eye on the action at the18th hole.
The lounge, which can accommodate220 people, can be separated intoeither two or three areas. These canthen be used for private functionswithout inconveniencing golf clubmembers.
Bifold doors open out to a balcony, which has plenty of seating and issheltered by large glass panels.
There are four administration offices, which are easily located inside the mainfoyer.
A boardroom and men’s andwomen’s locker rooms and toiletfacilities make up the remainder of theground floor of the clubrooms.
Upstairs, there is a lounge for juniormembers of the club and a meeting
room that can accommodate 50people.
At the front of the clubrooms, a fullystocked golf shop is run by clubprofessional Andre White.
Manawatu Golf Club generalmanager Rhys Watkins says theclubhouse development project hasbeen on the agenda for 10 years.
The question of whether to rebuild orto refurbish was settled at a specialmeeting last year, when a majority ofmembers favoured rebuilding.
‘‘The project was made possible by asteering committee of influentialbusiness people from within the club,
led by Gerard Gillespie,’’ Mr Watkinssays.
Mr Gillespie, says the group of aboutseven used their combined expertise indifferent areas to move the projectforward and generally ‘‘make ithappen’’.
The group was very happy with theoutcome – a facility that all agreed wasthe best in the area.
‘‘We always wanted it to be a facilityfor the whole city, not just for the golfclub.’’
It is certainly that, as it is an idealvenue for both official conferences andprivate functions.
Mr Gillespie says it’s too good anenvironment for the exclusive use ofmembers of the golf club.
‘‘It was our vision that the widercommunity would use the facility.’’
The brief to architect Colin Campbellwas quite specific.
First, there needed to be an obviousmain entrance – something the oldclubhouse did not have.
Second, the administration officesneeded to be in an obvious place nearthe main entrance.
Third, a bar and catering servery wasneeded in one area, so that the areacould be used for public functions.
Fourth, there needed to be outdoorareas, and and there had to be goodviews of the golf course.
Fifth, there needed to be far moregeneral storage space.
‘‘It had to be a modern facility thatwould be here for the next 40 to 50years and that wouldn’t date toomuch,’’ Mr Watkins says.
Finally, the project had to becompleted within the set budget.
Mr Campbell, a member of the club, quickly came up with the plans, ‘‘whichwere ‘‘extremely close to the endproduct’’, Mr Watkins says.
Funding for the completion of the
project came from a number of sources.Around half the money came from
members’ debentures, and is scheduledto be repaid during the next 15 years.
There were also ‘‘reasonable’’ clubreserves to pour into the project.
The third source of funding wasgrants from charitable trusts.
‘‘We are grateful to the support ofthe Central Energy Trust, the EndeavourCommunity Trust, New ZealandCommunity Trust, Infinity Foundationand the Eastern and CentralCommunity Trust.’’
In-kind donations were the finalsource of assistance for the project.
The official opening of the clubroomswill be held at 11am tomorrow.
Palmerston North Mayor Jono Naylorand Manawatu Golf Club presidentJohn Bills will perform the honours.
All golf club members and somespecial guests have been invited to theopening, which will be followed by aclub tournament that tees off at12.30pm.
An open day is being held on Sundayfrom 3pm to 5pm. Anyone interested ininspecting the new facilities or whowould like to join the club is welcome.
Club members will be there toanswer any questions.
Club has uniqueclaim to fameThe Manawatu Golf Club, whichwas established in 1895, is not theoldest club in New Zealand, butenjoys the distinction of having theoldest course that is still on itsoriginal site.
Club president John Bills says thecourse has undergone a fewchanges over the years – unlike theclubhouse, which has seen manyalterations and redevelopments.
‘‘Those early members musthave had great vision to turnswamp land into a golf course.Over the years, the course hasbeen improved to what it is today.’’
Mr Bills says that, compared withmodern golf courses, the club’scourse is not overly long, but that, with its narrow, tree-lined fairwaysand the many bunkers guardingthe greens, it calls for accuracy withall shots.
‘‘Before resort courses were built, the Manawatu course wasconsidered to be one of the top 10in the country. And because of this,we have held many leadingamateur tournaments.’’
Continuing this tradition, theclub is hosting the men’sinterprovincial matchplaytournament next week.
During the 1960s and 70s, manyof the top professionals, such asPeter Thompson and Kel Nagle, frequently played on the
Manawatu course and rated ithighly, Mr Bills says.
‘‘The clubhouse has always beena much-discussed topic.
‘‘Despite many alterations overthe years, you could say theclubhouse hasn’t kept up with thecourse. With the bar and lounge onone level and the dining room onanother level, it was a disjointedfacility.’’
He says that, after years ofdeliberations and countlessmeetings, club members last yeardecided to adopt the designsubmitted by architect ColinCampbell, and agreed that workwould start early in 2009.
The new clubhouse is a single-storey, raised clubhouse with allthe amenities on the same floor, making it a more user-friendlyplace for club members andvisitors.
‘‘Humphries Construction wasthe successful tenderer, and theclub is grateful for the work it, andits subcontractors, have done.’’
Mr Bills says that, with a goodcourse and modern clubhouse, thisfacility is an asset to PalmerstonNorth.
‘‘To those who are thinking oftaking up golf, come and join thefriendliest club around. Golf is agame for life. We have membersaged from 5 to 95.’’
