W hen the Manawatu Golf Club opens the doors of its new clubrooms this weekend, it will mark the start of a new era. The clubhouse development project, which had been on the backburner for about a decade, has resulted in one of the top golfing facilities in the country. The new clubhouse is available for hire, for a range of social occasions, throughout the year. The picturesque setting of the golf course makes it ideal for weddings and other social events, for which there are on-site caterers who offer a variety of menu options. The club can also cater for business functions and conferences during the week, and welcomes inquiries from anyone looking for a suitable venue. As the opening of the new clubhouse is an opportune time to increase the club’s membership, an open day is being held on Sunday to give interested members of the public a chance to inspect the first-class facilities. Work on the $2.3 million building, carried out by Humphries Construction, has taken eight months. Overall, the cost of the project is put at $2.7 million. The new clubhouse is on the site of the existing clubrooms, 75 percent of which were demolished. The large, purpose-built facility includes a cafeteria and a large lounge. There is also a catering servery, serviced by a commercial kitchen, and a bar. And finally, there is a breath-taking view of the course that allows members to keep an eye on the action at the 18th hole. The lounge, which can accommodate 220 people, can be separated into either two or three areas. These can then be used for private functions without inconveniencing golf club members. Bifold doors open out to a balcony, which has plenty of seating and is sheltered by large glass panels. There are four administration offices, which are easily located inside the main foyer. A boardroom and men’s and women’s locker rooms and toilet facilities make up the remainder of the ground floor of the clubrooms. Upstairs, there is a lounge for junior members of the club and a meeting room that can accommodate 50 people. At the front of the clubrooms, a fully stocked golf shop is run by club professional Andre White. Manawatu Golf Club general manager Rhys Watkins says the clubhouse development project has been on the agenda for 10 years. The question of whether to rebuild or to refurbish was settled at a special meeting last year, when a majority of members favoured rebuilding. ‘‘The project was made possible by a steering committee of influential business people from within the club, led by Gerard Gillespie,’’ Mr Watkins says. Mr Gillespie, says the group of about seven used their combined expertise in different areas to move the project forward and generally ‘‘make it happen’’. The group was very happy with the outcome – a facility that all agreed was the best in the area. ‘‘We always wanted it to be a facility for the whole city, not just for the golf club.’’ It is certainly that, as it is an ideal venue for both official conferences and private functions. Mr Gillespie says it’s too good an environment for the exclusive use of members of the golf club. ‘‘It was our vision that the wider community would use the facility.’’ The brief to architect Colin Campbell was quite specific. First, there needed to be an obvious main entrance – something the old clubhouse did not have. Second, the administration offices needed to be in an obvious place near the main entrance. Third, a bar and catering servery was needed in one area, so that the area could be used for public functions. Fourth, there needed to be outdoor areas, and and there had to be good views of the golf course. Fifth, there needed to be far more general storage space. ‘‘It had to be a modern facility that would be here for the next 40 to 50 years and that wouldn’t date too much,’’ Mr Watkins says. Finally, the project had to be completed within the set budget. Mr Campbell, a member of the club, quickly came up with the plans, ‘‘which were ‘‘extremely close to the end product’’, Mr Watkins says. Funding for the completion of the project came from a number of sources. Around half the money came from members’ debentures, and is scheduled to be repaid during the next 15 years. There were also ‘‘reasonable’’ club reserves to pour into the project. The third source of funding was grants from charitable trusts. ‘‘We are grateful to the support of the Central Energy Trust, the Endeavour Community Trust, New Zealand Community Trust, Infinity Foundation and the Eastern and Central Community Trust.’’ In-kind donations were the final source of assistance for the project. The official opening of the clubrooms will be held at 11am tomorrow. Palmerston North Mayor Jono Naylor and Manawatu Golf Club president John Bills will perform the honours. All golf club members and some special guests have been invited to the opening, which will be followed by a club tournament that tees off at 12.30pm. An open day is being held on Sunday from 3pm to 5pm. Anyone interested in inspecting the new facilities or who would like to join the club is welcome. Club members will be there to answer any questions. Club has unique claim to fame The Manawatu Golf Club, which was established in 1895, is not the oldest club in New Zealand, but enjoys the distinction of having the oldest course that is still on its original site. Club president John Bills says the course has undergone a few changes over the years – unlike the clubhouse, which has seen many alterations and redevelopments. ‘‘Those early members must have had great vision to turn swamp land into a golf course. Over the years, the course has been improved to what it is today.’’ Mr Bills says that, compared with modern golf courses, the club’s course is not overly long, but that, with its narrow, tree-lined fairways and the many bunkers guarding the greens, it calls for accuracy with all shots. ‘‘Before resort courses were built, the Manawatu course was considered to be one of the top 10 in the country. And because of this, we have held many leading amateur tournaments.’’ Continuing this tradition, the club is hosting the men’s interprovincial matchplay tournament next week. During the 1960s and 70s, many of the top professionals, such as Peter Thompson and Kel Nagle, frequently played on the Manawatu course and rated it highly, Mr Bills says. ‘‘The clubhouse has always been a much-discussed topic. ‘‘Despite many alterations over the years, you could say the clubhouse hasn’t kept up with the course. With the bar and lounge on one level and the dining room on another level, it was a disjointed facility.’’ He says that, after years of deliberations and countless meetings, club members last year decided to adopt the design submitted by architect Colin Campbell, and agreed that work would start early in 2009. The new clubhouse is a single- storey, raised clubhouse with all the amenities on the same floor, making it a more user-friendly place for club members and visitors. ‘‘Humphries Construction was the successful tenderer, and the club is grateful for the work it, and its subcontractors, have done.’’ Mr Bills says that, with a good course and modern clubhouse, this facility is an asset to Palmerston North. ‘‘To those who are thinking of taking up golf, come and join the friendliest club around. Golf is a game for life. We have members aged from 5 to 95.’’
