Madison Opera dedicates this production of A Masked Ball to the memory of

ROLAND JOHNSONCo-Founder and Music Director of Madison Opera

Maestro Johnson and his wife Arline started what became Madison Opera with an Opera Workshop performance in 1962, followed by a sold-out La Bohème in 1963. As Madison grew in the years that followed, so did the company, moving its performances from East High School to the Union Theater and then the Oscar Mayer Theater.

Under Maestro Johnson’s baton, the company performed classics such as Carmen, unusual works such as The Bartered Bride, and even a world premiere commission, Daron Aric Hagen’s Shining Brow, in 1993. Following his retirement in 1994,

Maestro Johnson conducted several more operas and prepared the chorus until 2008. He remained an active supporter of Madison Opera, attending the company’s 50th anniversary gala and speaking with great affection about the company he had built.

He touched the lives of many and shared with us his passion for teaching, inspiring and motivating others to strive for excellence. Roland Johnson was truly a shining example of what can be accomplished if you follow your heart and Madison Opera is honored to continue his vision.

“A consummate musician and a gentleman.” — John DeMain

Dear Friends,

Opera is about the music and drama, and our choice of Verdi’s A Masked Ball is a perfect reflection of that. In recent years, we have presented well-known operas you have wished to hear again (and, sometimes, again), and less frequently performed operas which you otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to enjoy. We continue that mélange this season with performers who’ve excited us in the past and others who will excite us for the

first time. While other opera companies have closed or scaled back in a difficult economy, we’ve not only maintained our seasons, but our shows keep getting better, we’ve expanded our outreach to young people throughout our region, and acquired a permanent home only one block from the Overture Center. That we’ve been able to accomplish this results from two things: we are fiscally very well-managed and we have been the grateful recipients of your financial support.

We still need your support. If you’ve enjoyed our efforts in the past and if you enjoy them tonight, please consider making a contribution to the Opera.

Thanks, again (and again),

Stephen Hurley, President, Madison Opera Board of Trustees

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Sweden – and the start of Madison Opera’s 2012/13 season. This is our first production of Verdi’s A Masked Ball, perhaps my favorite of the composer’s operas, and a work beloved by many opera-goers.

What makes A Masked Ball so popular? I think it’s the combination of the music and the drama. The music

includes great dramatic arias like only Verdi can write, but also free-for-all ensemble numbers that get the pulse racing as they drive the opera forward. The love triangle is complicated – none of these characters are one-dimensional and it’s not an obvious story of good guys versus bad guys. Even a royal conspiracy, Verdi tells us, is complex.

I am delighted with the cast we have, almost all of them singing their roles for the first time. William Joyner gave an indelible performance as Galileo here last January; Hyung Yun brought down the house as the tormented Eugene Onegin; Alexandra LoBianco’s voice thrilled both me and John DeMain when we first heard it; and Jeniece Golbourne is a true Verdi mezzo.

None of this would be possible without our generous supporters – individuals, businesses, and foundations who believe in the importance of what we do and what we mean in our community. I am grateful to them and to all of you for making our seasons possible.

The exciting news of our year is the purchase of the Madison Opera Center, our new home. Currently an empty space without walls or floors, it will be transformed this spring into a rehearsal hall, offices, and much more; you can read more about it on page 9 of this program and on our website. Bringing our artistic and administrative activities under one roof will transform the company in ways we can only begin to imagine. It is an exciting journey and I look forward to sharing it with you, every step of the way.

Now sit back and enjoy the show!

Cheers,

Kathryn SmithGeneral Director

Presenting the Madison oPera CenterWith the help of a generous supporter, Madison Opera has purchased the space for a new home. Located at 335 W. Mifflin Street, the completed Madison Opera Center will house the company’s administrative offices, a rehearsal hall, a costume shop, and more. It will be a cost-effective way to consolidate our operations, while meeting future artistic needs and reaffirming our commitment to participating in the development and vitality of downtown Madison and the thriving Madison arts community.

The Madison Opera Center will allow us to focus on the core of our mission: providing our entire community with great opera performances and engaging educational programs for decades to come.

Why We need the Madison oPera Center

Financial StabilityOwning our own space allows us to control costs, rather than being subject to fluctuations in the rental market for offices, rehearsal space, and storage. When added to probable earned revenue streams, such as leasing our 88 parking stalls, this promises greater financial stability for Madison Opera. Conservative projections put us significantly ahead over the next 15 years, making this the strongest move we could make for the company’s long-term health and keeping us an important part of Madison for generations.

artiStic OppOrtunityThe Opera Center will enable us to expand our artistic, educational, and outreach activities. Examples may include free lunch-time recitals with our new Studio Artists, a regular preview series, summertime programs for youth interested in opera, and open houses for the general public as part of National Opera Week.

cOmmunity OppOrtunityThe arts are an integral part of downtown Madison, chiefly with the Overture Center, but also with the Bartell Theater and more. The Opera Center expands that artistic impact, with rehearsals literally at street level. Imagine walking down Mifflin Street to the Farmer’s Market or the new Central Library and pausing to peer into the Opera Center’s windows to see art being created! The rehearsal hall will allow us to share our resources with our community: several arts groups have expressed interest in becoming regular guests of the hall, and we have begun to identify other resources that can be shared as well.

For the Madison oPera Center

An extraordinary gift has been offered to Madison Opera by our longtime friends and supporters, Millie and Marshall Osborn. The Osborns will match dollar-for-dollar any gifts to the Madison Opera Center Building Fund, up to $200,000. Their challenge gift will match all contributions to this fund through July 1, 2013.

Our new Madison Opera Center space is unfinished, so the next step is making it a place we can share with our community and its arts groups. Won’t you help Madison Opera take this step and meet this Challenge? The inspiring generosity of Millie and Marshall Osborn will double your gift and double the impact for the Madison Opera Center Building Fund.

Please use the envelope enclosed in this program to send a gift or contact the Opera office. All donations are tax-deductible and very much appreciated.

Sweden, 1792

ACT I Courtiers await an audience with King Gustav III, including a group of conspirators led by Counts de Horn and Ribbing. The King notices the name of Amelia, wife of his secretary and friend Anckarström, on the guest list for a masked ball, and thinks about his secret love for her. Anckarström warns the King of a conspiracy against him, but Gustav ignores the threat. The page Oscar tells the King about the fortune-teller Ulrica, who has been accused of witchcraft and is to be banished. Deciding to see for himself, the King arranges for his court to pay an incognito visit to Ulrica.

In a warehouse, Ulrica invokes prophetic spirits and tells the sailor Christiano that he will soon become wealthy and receive a promotion. The King, who has arrived in disguise, slips money and papers into Christiano’s satchel. When the sailor discovers his good fortune, everybody praises Ulrica’s abilities. Gustav hides as she sends her visitors away to admit Amelia, who is tormented by her love for the King and asks for help. Ulrica tells her that she must gather a magic herb at night by the gallows. When Amelia leaves, Gustav decides to follow her there later that night. Oscar and members of the court enter, and the King asks Ulrica to read his palm. She tells him that he will die by the hand of a friend. Gustav laughs at the prophecy and demands to know the name of the assassin. Ulrica replies that it will be the first person that shakes his hand. When Anckarström rushes in, Gustav clasps his hand, saying that the oracle has been disproved since Anckarström is his most loyal friend. Recognizing their king, the crowd cheers him as the conspirators grumble their discontent.

ACT II Amelia arrives at the gallows and prays that she will be freed of her love for the King. When Gustav appears, she asks him to leave, but ultimately they admit their love for each other. Amelia hides her face when Anckarström interrupts them, warning the King that assassins are nearby. Gustav makes Anckarström promise to escort the woman back to the city without discovering her identity, then escapes. Finding Anckarström instead of their intended victim, the conspirators make ironic remarks about his cloaked companion. When Amelia realizes that her husband will fight rather than break his promise to Gustav, she reveals her identity to save him. The conspirators are amused and make fun of Anckarström

for his embarrassing situation. Anckarström, shocked by the King’s betrayal, asks de Horn and Ribbing to come to his house the next morning.

inTerMission

ACT III In his study, Anckarström threatens to kill Amelia. She asks to see their young son before she dies. After she has left, Anckarström exclaims that it is the King on whom he should seek vengeance, not Amelia. De Horn and Ribbing arrive, and Anckarström tells them that he will join their conspiracy. The men decide to draw lots to determine who will kill the King, and Anckarström forces his wife to choose from the slips of paper. When his own name is chosen, he is overjoyed. Oscar enters, bringing an invitation to the masked ball. As the assassins welcome this chance to execute their plan, Amelia decides to warn the King.

Gustav, alone in his study, resolves to renounce his love and send Amelia and Anckarström to Finland. Oscar brings an anonymous letter warning him of the murder plot, but the King refuses to be intimidated and leaves for the masquerade. In the ballroom, Anckarström tries to learn from Oscar what costume the King is wearing. The page answers evasively, but finally reveals Gustav’s disguise. Amelia and the King meet, and she repeats her warning. Refusing to leave, he declares his love one more time and tells her that he is sending her away with her husband. As the lovers say goodbye, Anckarström shoots the King. The dying Gustav forgives his murderer and admits that he loved Amelia but assures Anckarström that his wife is innocent. The crowd praises the King’s goodness and generosity.

give voiCe to your legaCySince 1961, Madison Opera has been sharing the excitement of opera with the citizens of Madison, Dane County and beyond. Planned giving through your estate will help ensure this tradition of artistic excellence for future generations, both on stage and through our education and outreach programs. Your gift will touch thousands of people in meaningful ways, for years to come.

Taking the first step is easy... Just include Madison Opera as part of your estate plan. Here is some simple language for an unrestricted bequest:

“I hereby give $____ or a percentage of my residual estate (or specific assets) to Madison Opera Inc., 3414 Monroe St., Madison, WI 53711, to be used at the discretion of the Madison Opera management and/or Board of Trustees.”

Please contact your attorney or financial advisor to discuss how you can include Madison Opera in your estate plan. Madison Opera is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our Encore Society honors individuals who have expressed their support of the Opera through a bequest or other planned gifts.

If you plan to include or have already included Madison Opera in your estate plan, please let us know. When updating your plans, please be sure we are referenced as Madison Opera Inc. We are proud to recognize you as an Encore Society member!

“I believe that there are many ways of contributing to something you believe in. I have been a member of the Opera’s Encore Legacy Society since the beginning because Madison Opera is important to me. Contributing to the arts is an investment in the health and well being of the community, benefiting adults and children alike. For today and tomorrow, I am proud to include Madison Opera in my estate plans.”
