2. NARRATOR: Life and death; two sides of the same coin

flipping eternally. Our tale is a tiny slice

of this period and occurs within a little

over twenty-four hours...

SCENE ONE: EXT. QUEEN ANNE MONTESSORIE SCHOOL DAY

(DEBORAH MARTINS, BODE MARTINS)

3. SOUND: WALLA; KIDS SCHOOLS OUT FADE UNDER

4. DEBORAH MARTINS: Yemisi, hold your brother and stand where I

can see you! (SIGHS) Yes, Bode?

5. BODE MARTINS: Is she still having trouble with her

Arithmetic?

6. DEBORAH MARTINS: We have to get going; I have to stop at the

shop before getting home. What do you want?

7. BODE MARTINS: Deborah...its been six months, three days

fourteen hours and about... five minutes

since I touched it last-and things are

looking up; my friend at the hospital

management board says Im going to be

transferred soon-

8. DEBORAH MARTINS: Yemisi! Dont go near the road! Bode, Im

really happy for you and everything and you

should keep it up I mean six months; thats

1. BODE MARTINS: The divorce is not final until next week

Dee, dont do this to us. I made mistakes

but Ive changed- I... I went to church last

Sunday and... You... you know I have this

thing under control- no! please dont walk

away; think about Yemisi and Bayo. We can

all go home right-

2. DEBORAH MARTINS: Im getting married. (PAUSE) After the

divorce; in July...Im sorry but this is

just too little...too late. Hey, Yemisi,

Bayo, come and say bye to your father.

3. MUSIC: GLADRAGS UP AND UNDER

SCENE TWO: INT. LOW COST TENEMENTS DAY

(GLADYS AKHIBI, TOSAN OMASEYE)

4. GLADYS AKHIBI: I left a message for her when I rang the

last time; did she receive it?

5. TELEPHONE VOICE: What did you say your name was again ma?

6. GLADYS AKHIBI: Im her mother; Gladys Akhibi. Did you tell

her that her mother telephoned?

1. TELEPHONE VOICE: She must have gotten your message but Ill

tell her that you called. Is this your

personal number?

2. GLADYS AKHIBI: (SUBDUED) Yes, but Im not sure shes

interested in speaking with me. (MUTTERS)I

suppose that is perfectly understandable.

May I know whom Im speaking with?

3. TELEPHONE VOICE: Im her secretary; my names Tosan Omatseye.

4. GLADYS AKHIBI: Very well, Tosan. It is quite unfortunate

but I must entrust you with...personal

information. (PAUSE)I have been diagnosed

with a life threatening disease and I was

hoping- praying really to be able... to

speak with her after so many years. Well if

I may impose on your time could you please

ask her to meet with me at the Holy Trinity

hospital by seven p.m.?

SCENE THREE: EXT. FINANCE STREET - DAY

(TAIWO IGE, EMEKA ANI)

5. SOUND: MOVING CAR

6. TAIWO IGE: So I sold him fifty thousand for three M and

the share price dropped to twenty-five per

last week and now he wants to dump them on

me. What he doesnt know is, tomorrow the

price is going to hit the roof!

1. EMEKA ANI: Isnt that illegal? Taiwo you are a trader;

you shouldnt be involved in-

2. TAIWO IGE: Im making a killing and youre worried

about illegal? Do you know what your problem

is Emeka? You are too scared; live, man!

Anyway, if youre interested Ill take half

and leave some for you; travel with your

missus huh? Enjoy. When was the last time

you took her anywhere?

3. EMEKA ANI: No, thanks my friend. Shes quite happy

where she is-speaking of which, have you

heard from Esoghe recently?

4. TAIWO IGE: Well, shoot me for trying. Esoghe? Its been

ages. Where do I drop you off?

5. EMEKA ANI: I think you should go and see her, talk

things over.

6. TAIWO IGE: Theres nothing to talk about; Im free now

why would I want to go back. I told you, the

girls an emotional prison. I mean if thats

what marriage is Ill just keep with being a

married bachelor. Is it okay here?

3. TAIWO IGE: Emeka think about my offer; you can buy

yourself a car at least- Im just trying to

give a leg up. Listen, well talk about it

4. EMEKA ANI: And you think about what I said about

Esoghe; shes still your wife and-

6. EMEKA ANI: (TO HIMSELF)-Shes pregnant.

SCENE FOUR: INT. ELEVATOR-WOMEN LAWYERS LEAGUE BUILDING DAY

(ESOGHE IGE, FINTI BELLO)

7. SOUND: DING

8. SOUND: FOOTFALLS

9. ESOGHE IGE: (EXCITEDLY) for this sort of an occasion you

should wear something low cut you know?

Lets go to that boutique- that one I got

the pink dress I wore to-

10. FINTI BELLO: Soghe, keep your voice down and whats

wrong with what Im wearing now?

11. ESOGHE IGE: A trouser suit? These are your work clothes!

You cant wear them to this kind of a date-

1. FINTI BELLO: Hey, slow down and dont crush me with your

belly; its so huge now. How many months

2. ESOGHE IGE: I want to hear how it goes first thing

tomorrow; I hope he goes the whole nine

miles.

3. FINTI BELLO: Whole nine yards. Isnt it about time you

let Taiwo know about the baby? He needs to

take on his responsibilities.

4. ESOGHE IGE: Oh, Hell come back when hes ready- Ive

told you I dont want it to be because of

the baby. After what happened hell think I

want to trap him again.

5. FINTI BELLO: Trap him? Hes your husband; hes already

trapped. Listen Ive got to get back

upstairs and you should go and get some rest

1. NARRATOR: The Holy Trinity hospital has been there for

as long as anybody can remember. A sprawling

high rise which was once the pride of the

city is now with many abandoned wards and

corridors. Amidst the ruins, whats left of

the hospital still operates. It is here on

the night shift we meet the small staff who

manage to keep things running.

SCENE FIVE: INT. HOLY TRINITY HOSPITAL NIGHT

(GLADYS AKHIBI, AYO OMOTOSHO, BODE MARTINS)

2. SOUND: RADIO TUNER STATIC-CHANGING STATIONS

3. GLADYS AKHIBI: Please put that off at once, Nurse Ayo.

4. SOUND: CLICK-RADIO OUT

5. GLADYS AKHIBI: I understand that this is your first shift

with us therefore I will overlook this; this

is a hospital, not a dance hall if you

please. Has anyone been here asking of me?

6. AYO OMOTOSHO: No, ma. Only the patient in ward two came

here; he wanted me to call his wife

7. GLADYS AKHIBI: Well! Its only past eight; I suppose she

could be late-traffic, Im sure. (PAUSE) My

daughter is supposed to meet with me here

tonight, when she comes please let me know.

Has the doctor Martins come in?

1. AYO OMOTOSHO: Yes ma, but can I listen to the radio? Ill

turn down the volume.

2. GLADYS AKHIBI: No radios please my dear, at any volume. Now

Ill just check in on the doctor; should

have been doing his rounds by now. And

nurse, there is no patient presently in ward

two.

3. SOUND: FOOTFALLS AWAY

FEW MOMENTS LATER

4. SOUND: DOOR KNOCK X3

5. GLADYS AKHIBI: Doctor Martins? Are you in there?

6. SOUND: DULL MUFFLED THUD

7. SOUND: DOOR CREAKS OPEN

8. GLADYS AKHIBI: Doctor- Holy Mary Mother of God! Nurse!

SCENE SIX: INT. ESOGHE IGES FLAT NIGHT


9. TELEVISION WEATHERMAN: - WEATHER FRONT MOVING TO THE

SOUTHWEST OF THE COUNTRY PROMISES SOME HEAVY

RAINFALL AND THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT...

1. ESOGHE IGE: Coming! (PAUSE) Who is it?

2. FINTI BELLO: (DISTANT) Soghe, its me Finti

3. SOUND: CREAKING DOOR OPENS

4. ESOGHE IGE: (EXITED) Finti! Hi! Come in, come in. How

did it go?

5. FINTI BELLO: It went. What are you cooking?

6. SOUND: SHUT DOOR

7. ESOGHE IGE: Oh! I forgot the spaghetti. Come lets go to

the kitchen youll tell me all about it.

8. SOUND: FOOTFALLS

9. FINTI BELLO: Nothing to tell. We got there and ordered

drinks and he proposed.

10. ESOGHE IGE: (SCREAMS DELIGHTFULLY) He proposed! Ooooh!

Im so happy for you. This is wonderful.

Tell me what he said exactly.

11. FINTI BELLO: He asked me if I could find it in my heart

to marry him.

12. ESOGHE IGE: I knew it! And?

13. FINTI BELLO: (Sighs) And I said no.

2. ESOGHE IGE: No? No-what? What do you mean you said no?

3. FINTI BELLO: Spaghettis burning.

4. ESOGHE IGE: But why? What did he do wrong? Oh Finti how

could you? I mean you guys have been dating

and everything and weve been waiting for

him to propose (BREATHLESS) and you refused?

5. FINTI BELLO: Malt. He ordered malt. Speaking of which; is

there anything strong enough in your fridge?

6. SOUND: BOTTLES CHINKING

7. ESOGHE IGE: What has malt got to do with anything? Oh

you mean he should have ordered champagne?

Okay it wasnt romantic? (CHOKING BACK

TEARS) Oh, Finti, are you alright?

8. SOUND: POP OF BOTTLE CORK

9. FINTI BELLO: Never righter. Listen, rescue the spags.

Ill be in the living room.

SCENE SEVEN: INT. BILLIARDS LOUNGE NIGHT

(TAIWO IGE, EMEKA ANI)

2. SOUND: WALLA; BAR AMBIENCE

3. TAIWO IGE: Emeka. You see, when youre as good as I am

you can afford to be generous. Dont worry I

in front of that pocket; try again.

4. EMEKA ANI: Take your shot; I dont need your bragging.

Youre just trying to impress her.

5. TAIWO IGE: Well, she has been watching me all evening.

What do you think? You think shes waiting

for someone?

6. EMEKA ANI: Probably. She doesnt look like a working

girl and I dont know about her watching you

just play the game.

7. SOUND: THWACK

8. TAIWO IGE: Solid in the top left pocket. Whoever it is

shes waiting for, hes lost out. Ill take

her when I finish beating you.

9. EMEKA ANI: Did you think about what we discussed this

afternoon?

10. TAIWO IGE: Yeah spoke to my lawyer too. No use just

hanging on I guess its better to make a

1. EMEKA ANI: Ten years this May.

2. TAIWO IGE: Ten years-did you see that shes looking at

me again-wow, a whole decade. Anyway, Esoghe

is well- just so highly strung you know?

3. SOUND: THWACK.

4. EMEKA ANI: Nice shot. Its called marriage; get used to

it. Looks like your mystery ladys enjoying

your game. Oops, foul. Keep your eye on the

ball my friend.

5. TAIWO IGE: Dont worry, theres still some game left.

Tell you what; lets bet five grand on the

game.

6. EMEKA ANI: Nope. Thats another thing you should learn

about marriage. Your moneys not your money.

Mystery ladys date has arrived. Solid in

this pocket.

7. TAIWO IGE: Enjoy. I really didnt know how to handle

it. Marriage I mean; Esoghe was always you

know-right under my skin; get home early,

love you, miss you, made dinner, notice my

SCENE EIGHT: INT. HOLY TRINITY HOSPITAL NIGHT

(GLADYS AKHIBI, BODE MARTINS, AYO OMOTOSHO)

1. GLADYS AKHIBI: Please nurse, get on the desk and remove the

rope from the ceiling and get rid of

whatevers left in that bottle. Doctor

Martins, do you want more coffee?

2. BODE MARTINS: (SLIGHT SLUR) I just want to die- leave the

rope where it is and leave me alone!

3. GLADYS AKHIBI: Drink the coffee; youll feel better. Nurse,

you can get back to the reception; let me

know as soon as my daughter arrives.

4. SOUND: DOOR OPENS-SHUTS

5. GLADYS AKHIBI: It was a fortunate thing I came in when I

did. Why did you want to hang yourself?

6. BODE MARTINS: I have nothing to live for matron-look at

me! My mates are all doing well; private

practice and Im stuck in this...museum. And

thats only because I can pull some strings-

(LAUGHS)-pardon the pun- at the board.

4. BODE MARTINS: Bode. My names Bode. Dont be so formal all

5. GLADYS AKHIBI: Well, I have a daughter just about, Bode;

shes meeting me here tonight.

6. BODE MARTINS: Im sorry for- shes gone matron! She turned

and walked away- getting married in July and

theres nothing I can do.

SCENE NINE: INT. BILLIARDS LOUNGE NIGHT

(TAIWO IGE, EVE OGWUCHE, EMEKA ANI)

7. MUSIC: LIGHT JAZZY THEME SOURCE BED- UNDER.

8. SOUND: WALLA; BAR AMBIENCE;

long do I have to wait?

4. TAIWO IGE: Couple of minutes; watch and learn.

5. SOUND: SPACED OUT THWACKS X4

6. TAIWO IGE: Where would you like me to put the last

7. EVE OGWUCHE: This pocket.

9. SOUND: THWACK

10. TAIWO IGE: Barman! Give the lady a drink, Boardman rack

up, Emeka give my regards to the missus.

11. EMEKA ANI: Watch out, hes in a killer mood. Nice

meeting you. Taiwo, lets talk briefly.

AFTER A MOMENT

12. EMEKA ANI: We have to go; I cant get a bus at this

time. Missus is already calling.

missus will have to wait; cant drive you

home to a warm bed and go home to sleep

6. ESOGHE IGE: But youre the one always saying you cant

stand them pushing you around.

7. SOUND: RINGING CELLPHONE

8. FINTI BELLO: Its him. Hes been calling since; begging

and generally worrying my life. I dont want

to marry him-in fact I dont want to marry

at all.

2. SOUND: CELLPHONE RINGING STOPS

3. FINTI BELLO: I think you should tell Taiwo; he has a

(GASPS)

5. FINTI BELLO: Whats wrong? Are you okay

6. ESOGHE IGE: Im just a bit...tired. Do you mind if I

take a quick shower? Get some spaghetti from

the kitchen if you want.

7. SOUND: FOOTFALLS EXIT ESOGHE

8. FINTI BELLO: (MUTTERS) Hell get to know sooner or later.

I dont know whos more stubborn between the

two of you.

9. SOUND: DISTANT RUMBLE OF THUNDER

SCENE TEN: INT. BILLIARDS LOUNGE NIGHT

(TAIWO IGE, EVE OGWUCHE, EMEKA ANI)

10. TAIWO IGE: Another game. Fifty thousand on the table.

11. SOUND: WALLA; GENERAL EXCLAMATION

1. EMEKA ANI: Are you crazy? Lets go now; you won a game

and she won the other, Taiwo, lets go. My

wifes calling every minute.

2. EVE OGWUCHE: Big boy! Its very tempting but I dont have

up to fifty on me.

3. TAIWO IGE: Thirty? And if you havent got that just

drop something as security. Did you bring

your car?

4. EMEKA ANI: Taiwo youre not listening to me-

5. TAIWO IGE: Emeka, cool down. I can beat her in just a

few minutes well be gone, look Ill dash

you the thirty.

6. EMEKA ANI: I dont want the thirty; I need to get home

besides I told you theres something very

important I want to discuss something with

you-

7. EVE OGWUCHE: My cars outside; the blue jeep. Well put

the car papers on the table; if you win you

hold on to mine and vice versa. Are you

ready to part with thirty thousand?

8. TAIWO IGE: Emeka, take this; no vex I beg take a taxi

home. Give my best to your wife.

1. EMEKA ANI: Its raining heavily outside. How am I

supposed to find a taxi in the rain? And

2. TAIWO IGE: You see this is why I said you should get a

3. EVE OGWUCHE: Are you ready to play?

5. TAIWO IGE: Dont mind him; he has to go home to his

missus. Ill break-hey Emeka leave my cue

stick now.

6. EMEKA ANI: Taiwo lets go.

(LONG PAUSE)

7. EMEKA ANI: If I leave this stick Im leaving and thats

the last time youll ever see or talk to me

again.

(PAUSE)

8. EMEKA ANI: Take your money; Ill find my way

9. SOUND: FOOTFALLS-FOOTFALLS STOP

10. EMEKA ANI: Oh and Taiwo, shes pregnant. Esoghes like

seven or eight months gone; I thought you

SCENE ELEVEN: INT. HOLY TRINITY HOSPITAL NIGHT

(GLADYS AKHIBI, AYO OMOTOSHO)

1. SOUND: RAIN MUFFLED

2. MUSIC: FRAGILE BY STING UP AND UNDER

3. AYO OMOTOSHO: Is the doctor feeling better ma?

4. GLADYS AKHIBI: This rain seems quite heavy. Doctor Martins

is asleep. Did my daughter- oh never mind.

5. AYO OMOTOSHO: Im sure the rain stopped her- and you know

how traffic gets bad when it rains. Matron

that patient came again; the one in ward

two, colonel Garba.

6. GLADYS AKHIBI: Hmm. Yes. (PAUSE) Perhaps its just delayed

her; shes probably on the way here. I hope

theres still some warm coffee left; shell

be cold when she gets here. What time is it?

7. AYO OMOTOSHO: Just past eleven, ma.

8. GLADYS AKHIBI: You must be mistaken nurse Ayo. About the

colonel I mean; he passed away last night.

(PAUSE) Thats quite a storm outside.

SCENE TWELVE: INT. ESOGHE IGES FLAT NIGHT

(FINTI BELLO, ESOGHE IGE)

2. FINTI BELLO: Soghe! Whats taking so long now? Whats

your cable channel on this thing? (MUTTERS)

Where is this girl?

5. FINTI BELLO: Esoghe! Where are you?

6. ESOGHE IGE: (DISTANT) Finti! Im here! The bathroom; the

doors jammed. Finti, can you hear me?

7. SOUND: BANGING ON DOOR

8. FINTI BELLO: I can hear you dont worry let me-(GRUNTS)

9. SOUND: THUMP X3

10. FINTI BELLO: Its stuck. Listen Soghe, just hold on; let

me try and find something to pry it apart.

12. NARRATOR: In life as in death there are rules, stages,

even meaning and once the threshold between

the two sides is crossed there is no return

but what are rules if there are no

exceptions?

(FINTI BELLO, ESOGHE IGE)

1. SOUND: RAIN-THUNDER

2. SOUND: RUNNING CAR ENGINE

3. FINTI BELLO: Try and keep still, breathe deeply; well

soon be at a hospital.

4. ESOGHE IGE: (BETWEEN BREATHS) Pains sharper than

before-

5. FINTI BELLO: Christ I cant see a thing. Pour some more

whiskey on my hand. Geez the whole streets

flooded.

6. SOUND: CAR ENGINE STOPS

7. ESOGHE IGE: We should have called a taxi; you cant

drive well with your injured hand-

8. FINTI BELLO: Shhhh. dont worry about it we just need to

get through this flood and well be okay.

How are you feeling?

9. ESOGHE IGE: Water looks deep.

10. FINTI BELLO: Well, its now or never

11. SOUND: IGNITION - SWISHING

12. FINTI BELLO: Thats it, keep going keep moving were

almost through...

SCENE THIRTEEN: HOLY TRINITY HOSPITAL NIGHT

3. GLADYS AKHIBI: (ECHO) Albert, what are you doing here?

NARRATOR: Spinning like the earth the coin of life and

death touches us all. Upon hearing of the

the bridge Esoghe was particularly touched

and maintains a closer friendship with Ayo

till this day; hoping perhaps to hear from
