POSTSCRIPT
!Dan went on to pursue a career in local government. Despite leaving school with no
qualifications, Dan attended night classes, attaining a HNC in civil engineering. Dan
moved from Stanley to Newcastle City council and then onto Washington District
Council.
!He then returned to the newly formed Derwentside District Council (Stanley and Consett
offices) as a senior engineering assistant. Dan took early retirement at the age of 59 to
spend time with his wife Sylvia at his home in Burnhopfield.
!In the 1980s the closure of coastal mines began and in 1993 the last deep coal mines of
County Durham closed.
