JANUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER
A Message fromGovernor Orton
Dear Zonta District 2 Zontians,
Best wishes and all good desires for a hopeful, spectacular 2019!
This is definitely a time of the year for all of us to reflect and plan
ahead for the future of women and girls all over the world. In the past
100 years we have done much, but we need to continue to work for the
well being of young girls, women, mothers and grandmothers
worldwide.
Our mission this biennium is to focus on early childhood marriage and
the safety and education of young people. I encourage you to continue
to work together and support your local club projects as we all advance
Zonta International’s Missions.
Working together we continue to lift up women and girls and have a
positive impact for them around the globe.
Please join me in welcoming our newest members to Zonta District 2,
and thank you to their sponsors for sharing the word of Zonta.

Committee Corner
Mardy MooreBylaws Chair Zonta’s procedures call for a
review of bylaws in every other
biennium so the time is now.
Each club should review theirs
and look at such things as are
deadlines correct; do list of
responsibilities for officers
reflect what they are expected
to do; have you listed the date
when bylaws were amended.
This is not meant to be an
onerous job. Of course, I will
be happy to assist your club if
you would like me to help, and
I can be reached on 518 374-

Jane M.Klausman Women in
BusinessScholarshipby Karen Marcier
Did you know that Jane Klausman was a member of District 2? Servingas the District Committee Chair for this scholarship, in many ways, brings my relationship with her full circle. Jane was a dear friend tome as well as a valued mentor. She taught me so much about Zonta, parliamentary procedure and just about being a great individual. When she passed away in 1996, she was serving not only as the ZontaInternational parliamentarian but as my District parliamentarian as Iwas the governor at that time. I have also had the honor of serving asthe International Committee chair.
Jane had a deep and abiding love for Zonta and for its mission. Sherose through the ranks of business and knew how difficult it could befor women to climb the ladder of success. I think this is one of themany reasons that she left a generous endowment to create theWomen in Business scholarship. This is her way of ensuring that thewomen of tomorrow will continue to have many supportive hands ontheir journey.
The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship (JMK)provides funding for undergraduate women studying in the businessfield. Applications are posted in January. Typically, clubs must havetheir recommendation to the District by July. In September, the
District makes its recommendation to the International JMKcommittee. The International and District awards are announced eachNovember. There are 6 International awards of $8,000 and 32District awards of $2,000.
Funding for this scholarship comes from the income generated fromthe endowment as well as from generous gifts from Zontians andothers.
Women'sMarch 2019by Karen Guiseppe
Zonta International recently amended its policy on “Affiliation withOther Organizations”. The new guidelines stress that any affiliationsmust be clearly nonpartisan and nonsectarian. With the upcomingWomen March events being organized throughout our district, it isimportant to consider our participation carefully. Participation isacceptable when the goals of the event are nonpartisan andnonsectarian, when the event actively supports the Objects of Zonta, and when presence at the event will both enhance its impact and givepublic visibility to Zonta. It must be clear in all messages andpromotional material that Zonta International is nonpartisan andnonsectarian. Women March events are often sponsored at the local level and may ormay not be affiliated with the National Women March organization. They may be organized by an individual or sponsored by an
organization. The purpose of each may vary widely. It is important toreview the underlying purpose for each march before committing yourclub to participate. Governor Irene and District Advocacy Chair, Karen Guiseppe, recentlyreviewed the Operating Agreements and purpose of the march to beheld by Women March in Seneca Falls on Saturday, January 19. Thismarch is nonpartisan and nonsectarian and supports the Objects ofZonta. This event is appropriate for any clubs wishing to organizeparticipation. Please contact Karen Guiseppe, at [email protected], withinformation on any other local marches your club plans to participatein. She will help you review the purpose of the march and theprinciples of any sponsoring organization to ensure Zonta’sparticipation is appropriate.
