A Message From Our Community Lay Director

Volume 23, Number 08

August 2015 The Walk Way

I am asking you to join me in an act of faith.

This coming Sunday, August 2, I am asking you to

share your Christian faith and your love for Em-

maus. Well, what I am actually asking you to do,

is wear your Emmaus cross to church, and be

willing to talk to anyone who asks about it.

If you loved your Emmaus experience as a pil-

grim, if you are part of the Emmaus community,

it is time to stand up and be counted. It is the

goal of these Emmaus walks to build stronger

Christians who can become more active in their local churches. We need to let the

world know what we are doing, and we need to encourage others to make the Em-

maus pilgrimage so that they too can better understand God’s mission in their lives.

It is an act of faith to wear your cross in public in a non-Emmaus event. You should feel

safe wearing it in your church, but…it still takes an act of faith and courage. But it is

one that I am asking you to take.

Eastern Shore Emmaus—the dates of the fall walks are October 8-11 (men’s) and Octo-

ber 22-25 (women’s). Wear your cross Sunday, take a pilgrim application to church

with you, be ready to encourage and sponsor someone for a walk this fall. Ask your

church to put the dates for the walks in their bulletin, and be ready to speak about

how much your Emmaus experience meant to you.

I am asking you to join me in an act of faith. Wear you cross this Sunday, August 2.

And spread the word for others who have walked to do the same.

Baaaa..after all, we are the sheep of His pasture. (Psalm

100).

Kendy Allen

Community Lay Director

Editor’s Note: Since the newsletter is being published a little late, due to circumstances beyond

my control, the “Wearing Your Cross” project has been extended to any and all Sundays in the

month of August.

Thank you!

A Message From Our Spiritual Director

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eter-nal life.” (John 4:13-14 – NIV)

Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever be-lieves in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit. (John 7:37b-39a – NIV)

As I sit writing this article, I am thinking of the fresh waves of violence that have swept across our country. Truth be told, my heart is heavy. It is heart-wrenching to see people visit sense-less acts of violence upon others. My reaction to this, as it is with many, is to leap into action to eliminate anything and everything that I can associate as a contributing factor. We demand that people, and institutions, and governments, and anything else associated must be held accountable. There must be a reckoning! We hear cries to enact new laws…we hear cries to take rights away from people…we hear cries to seal off our borders, and run immigrants off from our country…we

hear all this noise about how we’re going to deal with these problems. But truth be told, we’re just running around put-ting out the fires, and not really dealing with the cause of the fires…we’re not really dealing with the root of the prob-lems. The root of the problem is, quite simply, the human condition. The human condition is defined as "the charac-teristics, key events, and situations which compose the essentials of human existence, such as birth, growth, emotionali-ty, aspiration, conflict, and mortality.” (Thank you Wikipedia!) Our unique Christian perspective tells us that the human condition describes the fact that we are born in a sinful condition (thank you Adam and Eve!) which requires salvation through Jesus Christ. I believe that in order to understand the root cause of the senseless violence that we see time and again, we need to understand both of these perspectives on the human condition. While we certainly understand the Christian perspective, we must also understand that our base sinful nature is per-vasive to us when we consider the fullness of the lifecycle. Our sinful nature is pervasive throughout our lifetime, especially at those key events and situations that compose the essentials of our human existence. Unless that script is rewritten, it becomes who we are. Unless our base sinfulness is eradicated, it will saturate and dete-riorate our lives. And friends…this is not what we have been created for. We have not been created to suffer and wallow in our sinfulness. We have been created by our glorious God to thrive! To live life to its fullest! To live life joyfully and free from the death that sin brings. And when we speak of the death that sin brings, it’s not about what happens to us after we leave this life, it’s about what happens to us right now. Sin brings death to our soul…now! But in the same sense, Jesus Christ brings life to our soul…now! The new life that Christ Jesus promises us is about the here and now…not just the afterlife, or eternal life. We have new life now through our life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ. When we see senseless acts of violence in our country, it’s oftentimes because of the pervasiveness of sin. Tak-ing rights away from people, or closing our borders, or enacting new laws are never going to eradicate these horrific acts. Only Jesus can do this! When we see these things happening in our culture, we need to see that it’s a cry for help. It’s a reminder that there are many broken people in our world today that are thirsting for new life. Every time we see a broken soul visiting evil upon others, we need to see it as a stark reminder that we are called to share Jesus in our broken

world. I often wonder how we have failed people who sink to such lows in their life. How many times have we failed to befriend the person who needs a friend? How many times have we failed to offer support to those who feel hurt or lonely? How often do we overlook those with mental health issues because it’s just too messy to deal with? How many times have we failed to offer Jesus to the lost? Let this be our call! When we see evil rearing its ugly head in our communities, our country, and our world, let us respond with the Gospel…with the life-giving name of Jesus Christ! Christ Je-sus has already won the battle for us…for all…all we need to do is embrace that victory…and share that victory! Now, let us go out and share Jesus in the broken and thirsting world! The mission field is waiting. We cannot sit idly by and wait for someone else to fix our problems. We need to act…

and we need to act now. Let us go, and live, and share the Gospel…the same Gospel that has given us new life! Thanks be to God! Amen! Pastor Derek

In listening to a good friend discussing recent events, I was reminded of how fragile a community can be.

How could they be anything else? They are made of people; fragile, unstable, sinful people. Conflict is in-

evitable, even within a Christian community. However, as Christians, our communities are far too im-

portant for us to allow our own, selfish urges and desires to break them apart. As Christians, we need

community.

It is through our community that we are able to come to a deeper and closer understanding

and relationship with God. Luke wrote, So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the

prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless

someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. (Acts 8:30-31). How,

then, can we hope to understand the scriptures without the varied gifts and insight of our fel-

low brothers and sisters in Christ? Likewise, how can our brothers and sisters fully grow in their under-

standing without our gifts and insight?

Therefore, let us cherish our communities. Let us hold the spiritual preservation of our

Christian communities far above our own comfort. When conflicts arise, let us resolve

them biblically; Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

(Ephesians 4:26). It might seem easy for us to abandon a community in conflict in search

of a community that agrees with our opinions, our “beliefs,” but how long will it be be-

fore a conflict arises in that community, and how many communities can we abandon before there are no

Christian communities left to belong to? Let us fiercely hold our communities together rather than stand

idle and watch them fall apart. Let us do the work that God has laid out for us, and take joy in doing it to-

gether; for His Glory.

Blessings To All,

Just a word of Thanks to those who contributed to the golf cart fund to have our

Golf Cart repaired. We received enough in donations to pay for the repairs and we are truly

grateful! It is great to see answered prayers for the needs of the community and you know

we rely on the golf cart a lot during a weekend. So Thank you again for your generosity.

Also I wanted to say Thank you for a generous gift given to our Scholarship Fund. As many of you know there

are only two times during the year that a special offering is taken for the Scholarship Fund and that is done at the can-

dlelight service during the women's walks. We were able to help with at least 9 scholarship requests on these past

walks. Remember you can donate anytime and any amount. If you are not teaming or sponsoring a pilgrim please con-

sider making a donation to the fund to help others in need. As our Lord blesses us we should bless others with His rich-

es, after all it all belongs to Him any way.

May Our Lord bless each of you as you do His work in this unstable world.

Love,

Rick Deans

Brothers And Sisters In Christ,

As Christians we understand just how much of a blessing and privilege the opportunity to pray is. What we may not often think about is that we are not alone in realizing just how powerful our communication with God is. When we are in the midst of the trials an tribulations that life can bring, the last thing that the devil wants us to do is to call on the name of the Lord for strength. Instead it is his wish that we would rely on our own abilities to cope with the circum-stances that we face. As the quote says, when we do offer prayers for God’s will to be done in our lives, the devil suffers because he understands just how much God loves and guides those who trust in him completely.

With this in mind, I would like to invite each of you to join with the 120 members of the Emmaus Prayer Team. The ad-dress to remember if you have a prayer is [email protected]
