A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners, You may have noticed the rock garden that was recently created in the courtyard area near the north entrance of the church. It has been designated a “Healing Garden” where people may come to lay their burdens before the cross and pray for healing and hope. It is also a site at which to pray for our beloved dead, especially when their graves are unknown or located at such a distance that makes regular visitation difficult. Why is such a place important? Historically, it would appear that human beings have consistently set apart sacred places on the earth to bury their dead or to acknowledge some religious experience that occurred there. Perhaps the most famous of these is Stonehenge in England. Parts of Stonehenge were erected 5,000

years ago. Most historians believe this series of stone monuments was a place to honor the dead and to celebrate seasonal rituals at the winter solstice. The famous Dolmens that punctuate Ireland had a similar purpose. Sacred sites were revered within the faith of Israel. In Genesis 28:10-22 for example, we read about the patriarch Jacob who, while travelling, spent the night at a certain shrine. Using one of the nearby stones as his pillow, he fell asleep and dreamt of a staircase that connected heaven and earth, upon which angels ascended and descended. When he awoke the next morning he exclaimed, How awesome is this place. Truly the Lord is in this spot although I did not know it. This is nothing else but an abode of God and a gateway to heaven. Then, he consecrated the place by pouring oil upon the stone, the same ritual gesture used today to consecrate altars and churches.

Several chapters later, in Genesis 32:23-33, Jacob has another nighttime encounter with an angel, who is God in disguise. Jacob and the angel wrestled until dawn and in this experience was confronted with his own mortality. St. Peter Chrysologus, the 5th century bishop of Ravenna, reflected on this archetypal event in one of his Advent Homilies: God comforted Jacob by a dream during his flight, roused him to combat upon his return, and encircled him with a wrestler’s embrace to teach him not to be afraid of the author of conflict, but to love him. After his night of arduous grappling, God changed Jacob’s name to “Israel,” translated, “one who wrestles with God.” In Exodus 3:1-2, Moses meets God in on Mount Horeb. There in a burning Bush that was not consumed, God revealed his compassionate presence to Moses and commissioned him to deliver Israel from the slavery of Egypt. In this theophany, God commanded Moses to remove his sandals, for he was standing on “holy ground.” Although all the earth is holy since it comes from the hand of God, by giving this specific spot a sacral character, Moses would be forever mindful of that holiness that permeates all of creation.

Steeped in this understanding, human beings give expression to their faith at natural sites where God was experienced in a profound way – places such as mountains, forests, deserts, wells, rivers, oceans and seas. People also express their faith by creating sacred places where it is hoped that God will manifest himself, such as churches, chapels, monasteries, and grottos. Through art and labor, God is glorified and humanity is ennobled, leaving a legacy of beauty for generations to come. Very early in the history of Christianity, such places were the graves and tombs of the martyrs. Their relics were regarded as objects of great power and were therefore enshrined beneath altars or centers of devotion where pilgrims might travel to implore their intercession. And so it is with our parish Garden – another place on this campus where people might come to encounter the healing power of God. Its design was kept simple and austere to acknowledge the hardship that burdens so many. A circle was chosen for its shape because, historically and culturally, it symbolized unity and eternity. Rocks, which in themselves evoke a sense of endurance and timelessness, give the spot a primeval quality. The main symbol in the garden is a cross, the style of which is

common in the Celtic lands of Wales, Scotland, Northumbria and especially Ireland. The basic structure of the Celtic Cross was a pyramid base holding a vertical, rectangular shaft with a horizontal arm set in a wheel or circle. Some scholars believe that the wheel, which represented the Pagan cult of the sun, was placed upon the Christian cross in order to show how Celtic spirituality blended aspects of Paganism with Christianity to form a unique style of Catholicism different from, but in harmony with, the Roman Catholicism of Europe. Frequently, the panels on Celtic Crosses were ornamented with abstract and highly intricate designs like those seen in the famous Book of Kells. Sometimes these panels portrayed scenes from the Bible or lives of the saints. Ultimately, the circle of creation held in tension with the cross of redemption makes a powerful impression on the viewer, both aesthetically and theologically.

In addition to the cross, our parish Healing Garden has a large textured rock within it to symbolize the strength of God’s saving power, as we read in Psalm 95, Come let us sing for joy to the Lord and shout with joy to the rock who saves us. There is also an evergreen plant as a reminder of God’s love that survives the lifeless cold of winter. A single pot of flowers brings color and warmth to this circle of stone, and a red votive candle continually burns as a beacon in the night. This Garden was formally blessed after the 8:15 liturgy on the feast of St. Benedict, July 11, 2019 and the following prayer was offered. Prayer of Blessing for the St. Joan of Arc Healing Garden Blessed and Dedicated July 11, 2019 Feast of St. Benedict God most holy, Creator of the universe and all that is in it, you willed that the earth might be a source of healing for those who are broken in body, mind or soul. Look upon us with your eyes and compassion and sanctify + this place fashioned from clay and encircled by rocks from ages unknown. Make this place… …a sacred shrine …and a gateway to heaven where… …the sorrowing find joy …the wounded find peace

…the frightened find courage …the forlorn find clarity …the sick find comfort …and the bereaved find hope. May all who lay their burdens here before the Cross of Christ be sustained by your abiding presence, and may they, in turn, go forth from this place to become instruments of your love in the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, the Divine Physician, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit. one God, forever and ever. Amen. (Composed by Gabriel B. Baltes, O.S.B.)

Thank you for your generous support of the St. Joan of Arc Charity Bake Sale that was held in May. The proceeds were sent to Catholic Extension to rebuild the devastated parishes in Puerto Rico.

Learn more about Catholic Extension’s work in Puerto Rico in the article below.

Your gift to Catholic Extension is helping Puerto Rico rise again.

Thank you for supporting our brothers and sisters throughout the island of Puerto Rico. Your generosity will assist and sustain these parish communities so that they can continue their spiritual works of mercy and serve their community.

Thank you for your support!

With more than 1,400 parishes throughout Puerto Rico, the Catholic Church is one of the best avenues through which we can provide direct help to our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters. Catholic Extension has worked with the Puerto Rican Church for 110 years. An example of a Catholic community helping their neighbors can be found at Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Diocese of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Sacred Heart Parish is in one of the poorest areas of Salinas, where most of the community suffered significant damage to their homes and

continue to use blue tarps on their roofs to prevent further damage. Fr. Omar, 31 years old, is the pastor of the parish. Fr. Omar and parish volunteers were helping with the outreach/humanitarian efforts for six months because most of the parish community consists of retirees and those that fall far below the poverty line. In many of the communities surrounding the parish, it took a year before they had working electricity. The church roof is so badly damaged that when it rains, water comes in and warps the wood, causing further damage. The crucifix was severely damaged during the Hurricane, because it is made of wooden clay. You can see it missing in the photo from inside the church.

The air conditioning for the church and parish hall were destroyed because of Hurricane Maria. The parish hall has no electricity- so much water went into the building that the circuit breaker

exploded. The hall is where all the parish activities take place, including Religious Education classes. Since the parish hall has no lights, Fr. Omar doesn’t hold RE classes or parish activities after 6pm. Many of the 75 children enrolled in RE do not attend, because evening classes are no longer offered. Fr. Omar’s rectory was destroyed by Hurricane Maria. The parish has no money for him to stay at a hotel, so since the Hurricane hit, he has been living at one of his parishioner’s homes. A tree fell through the kitchen and it’s now infested with rats and iguanas. He lost everything he had in the Hurricane. The current rectory is made entirely of wood and will eventually collapse. His hope is to build a new rectory made entirely of concrete, which will be more hurricane-proof. www.catholicextension.org/become-patron-puerto-rico

Each summer, St. Joan of Arc parishioners volunteer for a week in the "Back of the Yards" neighborhood in Chicago with Port Ministries’ Bread Truck. Our volunteers help deliver lunches to children

throughout the neighborhood. This year, St. Joan of Arc has committed to the week of July 29-August 2 to help Port Ministries. Here are some ways you can help: Bread Truck Volunteer (must be 18 or older)

Be part of the crew that distributes the lunches. Three volunteers are needed each day from 10 am-3 pm. (One of these volunteers would drive to the PORT ministries location).

Sandwich and Lunch Maker (must be 16 or

older) Help make the sandwiches needed for the day in the PAR kitchen at 7:30 am every morning July 29-August 2. Several volunteers are needed to make the 300 sandwiches each day.

Monetary Donations for the Purchase of Food

Items are also appreciated! To volunteer for any of these activities, or to make a monetary donation, contact Cindy Patterson at 312-497-8204 or Sandy Razka at 630-353-4533 or [email protected].

Blood Drive Thank You THANK YOU to all the donors who participated in our very successful blood drive on July 11th. Heartland Blood Cen-ters received 36 pints of much needed blood for emergency and scheduled sur-geries at our local hospitals. Our next Blood Drive will be held on Oct. 10th. Pads Night- August 1st

Our next Pads night will be Thursday evening, August 1st through the morning of Friday, August 2nd at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle. We will have sign ups in the Link today for those who would like to volunteer to help at the site or to bring or make food. Thank you for your efforts to bring an end to homelessness in DuPage County. If you have any questions, contact Matt Zurek at 331-645-9703 or Sandy Razka at 630-353-4533 or [email protected].

Waterleaf would like to extend a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the parishioners of St. Joan of Arc for participating in this year’s Baby Bottle for Life fundraising campaign. As of July 18, 2019, the parishioners of St. Joan of Arc have raised $5,454.08! Your support ensures that we can provide the material and emotional support necessary for men and women to choose life for their babies. Sometimes, just the simple fact that our doors are open, and a woman visits us, rather than an abortion provider, is the difference between life and death. We greatly appreciate your support and ask that you keep Waterleaf in your prayers. For information about Waterleaf and our programs and services, please contact us at 630-701-6270 or visit us on the web at www.onechoiceonelife.org.

We are looking for a consistent group of volunteers who would be willing to periodically insert flyers for various events into the parish bulletin after the 8:15 am Mass on Saturdays. Volunteers would be notified by email in advance of a bulletin insert. If you would like to participate, please contact Mary Beth Kerner in the Parish Office at [email protected].
