A Message From Our Senior Pastor

As we continue to celebrate this holiday season, let’s not forget to help the least, lonely, and left out and consider donating items to the Love Lived Out Campaign. Through December 23, the Eastern Star Church Care Center will be collecting donations items such as black hair care products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, and new hats and gloves for children and adults. These items can be dropped off on Sundays in the bins that are marked “Love Lived Out Donations,” or at the Main Campus church office during regular business hours. 2 Corinthians 9:12 reminds us, that “this service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.”

Thank you to the youth who have served in ministry this year. It was a pleasure and great joy to see you volunteering in ministry. Your willingness to step out on faith and allow the Lord to lead you as you served in ministry will be your testimony when you talk with your peers about the importance of getting involved in a ministry. Continue serving and be an example for other youth. Prayerfully, others will soon get connected and volunteer in ministry.

As we close out this year, I encourage you to reflect on this year’s theme, Born Identity, (Mark 10:13-16 MSG), highlighting the ever-increasing need for our youth to know their identity as a child of God. How has God shaped your identity? How did you and your family get involved in ministry? How did you come alongside our youth to help shape their identity as a child of God? Did you get a youth connected to our youth programs or events? Did you invite youth who are unchurched or unsaved to church?

For 2019, we will have new and exciting programs and classes for the congregation in which to participate! Stay tuned for more details.

Continue to keep this ministry, church members, The ROCK Initiative, our partners in Haiti, and those who may be struggling either financial or emotional this season in your thoughts and prayers.

• The ROCK Fresh Market provides access to healthy, affordable food and nutrition education. Also, the ROCK Fresh Market has received its EBT/SNAP certification.

• The ROCK Community Hub was established to provide easy access to social services and community resources through out the 46218 zip code and surrounding communities. Please support the services provided by our valued community partners: Anointed Hands Salon (beautician), GO Consulting LLC (workforce development and soft skills), Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership (homeownership preparation), Jomo’s Barbershop (barber), Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic (legal services), RecycleForce (re-entry assistance), and Take Two (re-entry assistance).

How do we keep Jesus the main focus during the holiday season and especially at Christmas? We should no longer participate in the consumption of goods we don’t need, engaging in America’s spirit of consumerism. Instead, we should focus on meeting the needs of others. The mindset we should adopt is what Jesus spoke about in Matthew 25,

“Whatever you do for of the least of these, you did for me.” During this season feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, lonely, and left out. These are all ways we can keep Christ the reason for the season.

Let us continue to do our part by adding more Christ to Christmas.

JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON BY PASTOR JAY

I had a dream the other night. I dreamt that it was my birthday and my friends decided to throw a party celebrating the day I was born. When I showed up to the venue on that cold winter night, all my family and friends were there greeting me at the door. We had music, food, games, and they even sang Happy Birthday to me! By the time I was ready to receive my gifts, my dream had taken an interesting turn. As I looked up from the birthday cake, I realized everyone at the party was getting gifts. My family and friends were exchanging gifts with one another, unwrapping presents, and sharing laughter. The few gifts I received were okay, but I didn’t feel as special because everyone in the room also received presents. When I woke up from that dream in a cold sweat, and I realized the dream I had, was just that, a dream. But for Jesus Christ, He lives this dream every year on December 25.

Every year people all over the world get together with their loved ones, with food, music, and games to celebrate and recognize the birth of our Savior. We call this day Christmas. More (mas) than Christ. However, when it seems as if everyone except Christ is getting the gifts, it appears to be less Jesus and more consumption. A majority of people use this time of the year to purchase things they don’t need and forget the real reason for the season.

Kirk Franklin’s 1995 song, “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” still holds true from the day Jesus was born, He is the true reason for the season. The day Christ was born is documented in Matthew 2 and Luke 2; the wise men traveled to one of the poorest communities, Bethlehem. When they showed up, they found his mother Mary, his step-father Joseph, and baby Jesus in a barn, while the child was lying in a manger. The wise men came celebrating the birth of the Savior with gifts. They didn’t provide gifts for Mary, Joseph, nor the owner of the land; the only one that received gifts that night was Jesus the Christ.

WE SAVED A SEAT FOR YOU BY STACEY MOORE

Have you ever frantically rushed to meet friends on time? When you arrive, the event is crowded, but your friends saved a seat just for you. That simple act probably brought relief and a smile to your face.

Women of the Word Ministry has saved you a seat at its table. The ministry’s current discussion,

“We Saved a Seat for You,” focuses on finding and keeping lasting friendships. Sandra Keith, Director of Christian Education,stated, “This year we’re focusing on how to be a good friend even when you are misunderstood or hurt.

We want women to know they are not alone. We want to help women know that Jesus is the best friend we can have, especially when others mistreat them.”

“We Saved a Seat for You” also ties into this year’s theme of Born Identity. “We are striving to be like Christ and have examined how Jesus was a friend to those that society looked down upon and how to be careful not to do the same,” Sis. Keith shared.

This study has helped women understand the greatest commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is similar, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:36-39)

Women of the Word Ministry meets the second Sunday of each month at the Main Campus from 9 - 11:30 am. Women of all ages, teenagers to senior saints can attend the meeting. You do not have to member of Eastern Star Church or Women of the Word Ministry to attend. Don’t forget to bring a friend as well!

TRUST THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART: A MEMBER’S TESTIMONY BY PHYLLIS KENDALL

Julie “The Purple Lady” Griffith grew up in Boston during the sixties. As a biracial child, she experienced extreme racism from her family. At seven Sis. Griffith realized something was missing. Exposed to Catholic and Baptist churches while young, she didn't attend church regularly until she turned 18 years old. At the age of 25 while living in Indiana, Sis. Griffith got baptized, but soon after felt isolated because she wasn’t experiencing spiritual growth. She soon moved to Atlanta and struggled to find a Christian center that supported her during her divorce. On a recommendation, she tried Living Word Church in Atlanta, Georgia and after 10-12 years of attendance, Sis. Griffith developed her spiritual strength. After another stint in Boston, she returned back to Indianapolis and searched for a church home. Her daughter suggested Eastern Star Church and the minute Sis. Griffith walked in, she felt at home. Sis. Griffith serves in the Ladies in White Ministry and actively attends Sunday School and Bible Study. God’s grace has given her the courage to leave two bad marriages, has provided her with transportation that fits her physical needs, and introduced her to a wonderful church family. “I wake up with the breath of God every morning. Regardless of my physical abilities, I AM all that and a bag of chips,” stated Sis. Griffith.

She declares that after being saved her life has been absolutely amazing even during hard times. Knowing that God is with her through every step has kept her moving through the fire yet not getting burned. For Every Mountain by Kurt Carr reminds her how amazing God has been in her life. Sis. Griffith willingly shares her stories with others to help them through their struggles.

She credits Proverbs 3:5 for reminding her to trust in the Lord to direct her path because relying on her own understanding can lead to disaster.

Starting January 2019, the IGNiTE Children’s and Teen’s Ministry will be ‘on fire’ for Christ! Eastern Star Church’s IGNiTE Ministry is blazing the trail with teen discipleship opportunities, the Youth Council, Parent Connect, and ROCK City Mondays.

Pastor Percy Bland, Jr., Senior Coordinator of IGNiTE Children's and Teen's Ministries, stated that the foundational scriptures for the ministry came from Luke 3:16 (MSG)

“…will ignite the kingdom life, a fire, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out” and Romans 12:2 (NLT) “…but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Pastor Percy stated that this ministry will create a culture of youth who will be transformed to the next level in God.Just a brief forecast of how IGNiTE Children’s and Teen’s Ministry will operate in 2019:

IGNITE CHILDREN’S AND TEEN’S MINISTRYBY ALISA ALLEN

• Teen Discipleship will equip teens to become partners in collaboration with the Youth Council to develop a relationship and build on the multigenerational ties within the body of Christ.

• Parent Connect will partner with parents to empower both the youth and their families to keep connected. Parent Connect sessions will be held the first Monday of the month starting on February 4.

• ROCK City Mondays will start Monday, February 4, at the Main Campus from 5 - 8:30 p.m. Teens will have opportunities to be tutored or have coaching sessions in the following areas: math, reading, writing, general help (developing study skills, organization skills, or school workload management), and college research. Teens will also participate in culture impact classes (small group sessions), educational enrichment classes, and a Teen Talk session. ROCK City Mondays will provide transportation to/from the Fishers and Cooper Road Campuses.

• Children’s Church will be held on the first, third, and fourth Sunday of each month along with evening Bible Study for children and teens on Wednesday evenings at the Main Campus.

Why verify membership? It is essential for everyone to verify their membership so that the Church staff can identify those who have made a commitment to Eastern Star Church and be able to equip the member better for the work of the ministry.

Am I a member of Eastern Star Church? You are a member of Eastern Star Church if you:

• Have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and; • Have completed New Member’s Orientation.

Even if you attend church regularly, give consistently, and responded to the invitation to discipleship, you are not a member until you complete New Member’s Orientation.

The orientation gives information about the Body of Christ and how believers are to operate in the Body of Christ. It also reviews pertinent information about Eastern Star Church, such as history, current operations, and the many ministries a member can join to use their spiritual gifts.

How to verify membership? Visit our website and click on the FOR MEMBERS tab. Under ‘Member Forms,’ click on ‘Member Information Update’ and you’ll be directed to a page to make changes to your address, phone number, email, etc. Membership Verification forms are also available at the Ushers Stations at each campus.

Youth Formal: December 23Eastern Star Church, New Beginnings, and Light of the World Teens Ministries will host a Harlem Nights Youth Formal at Light of the World Christian Church on December 23, from 8 p.m. – midnight for teens ages 13 – 18 years old. Come out in your formal or semi-formal attire and enjoy an evening filled with music, food, and fun! Tickets are $10 at the door.
