D.H.S. Summer Learning Expectations
Please look for more information regarding summer learning expectations for Language Arts and Math coming soon on the Dearborn High iblog and from
classroom teachers in June.
Online Teen Safety during Summer Vacation Summer vacation is here and time away from school could mean plenty of extra time online for your kids - a lot of it happening when you’re not around to supervise.
And while the Internet can be a great source of fun and social interaction for your kids, it can also be a dangerous place. And while it feels like home is the safest place for your kids - the more time they spend online the more they
could potentially be exposed to inappropriate content (pornography, hate, violence, etc.), cyberbullying, and other online dangers.
Following are some suggestions that will help you keep your kids safe, when online, this summer:
1. Spend some offline time with your kids – daily! Try to devote some time every day to do something with your kids that doesn’t
involve a computer, TV, phone or any other kind of device. Spend time at the park in the morning, go to the beach in the afternoon, or just play an old fashioned board game at night. Your kids may
decide its more fun to continue with similar activities in the other parts of their day, even when you are not there.
2. Give kids fun alternatives, even when you can’t be there
with them. Encourage your children to participate in “traditional”
activities such as sports, dance, arts and crafts or camp – activities that will keep them away from their computer.
3. Going on a family vacation? Use your vacation time for relaxing and spending time with your family and try to avoid constantly checking your phone for emails or messages. If you
don’t do it – your kids will be less likely to do so. Avoid posting details (dates, location) of your family vacation for the entire world to see, and make sure your kids don’t do so either.
4. Discourage "checking-in" and geo tagging. Checking-in at
certain locations on Facebook, Foursquare or other social networks
is “cool” but could affect your kids’ and privacy and could expose your home and family to risk. Make sure your kids turn off any geo -tracking tools, and avoid “checking in”. Apps are also available
that privately let you check in or monitor locations of your child. One free app is, Life360.
5. Cyberbullying doesn't end with the school year Be aware of the warning signs that may indicate that your
child is a cyberbullying victim. Notice any behavior that seems unusual. Does your child normally enjoy using
the computer but suddenly no longer wishes do so? Is your child constantly engaged with interacting over the internet all hours of the day and night? These could be warning signs that you need to pay attention to.
6. Set summer online use boundaries. Set expectations early, even before the summer vacation begins. It is always advisable to have an online use contract, but perhaps this is the time to revise the contract and create a special “Summer Internet Use Contract” and a “Summer Mobile Phone Use Contract” to define clear and
understandable rules about what is acceptable and what is not. Make sure you and your children sign the contract and agree on the terms. If you are monitoring your child's photos be aware that some social media apps, such as SnapChat, have a
password protected area called, 'My Eyes Only Area' where personal photos can be kept.

As May comes to a close, so does Dearborn High’s Business Professionals of America chapter for the 2016-2017 school year. This year has been filled with great success and achievement for Dearborn High BPA. Among the great accomplishments that Dearborn BPA has earned is having twelve students place at the State Leadership Conference in March. These students have competed among the fiercest and strongest business minded and tech savvy students in the state of Michigan, and still were able to rise above and conquer. Nine of the twelve students have qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando Florida and not only made it but many earned 1st place in their respective event. This competition will take place in the Heart of Disney World, where students will not only be introduced to the famous mouse, but also thrust into a highly competitive, fierce, and energetic environment. The nine students will be
competing against the strongest BPA members in the country. The competition will be no less than intense, aggressive, but most of all fun and an engaging learning environment where Dearborn High will strive to make a name for itself. It has been an incredible year for Dearborn High BPA, and we would like to congratulate all of our members for their performance in the regional, state, and national leadership conferences, and we would like to thank them for all of their efforts and hard work they put in this year. During this time, a new BPA executive board is being selected, and we are planning process with our eyes on next school year. For anyone interested in business, technology, public speaking, information technology, marketing, finance, and much more, look into joining Dearborn High BPA next year. Look for information at the beginning of the school year and the deadline to join will be October 30, 2017. I promise the experience will not disappoint. DHS Senior Portraits - Yearbook Specifications The Dearborn High School staff requires the following type of senior picture. Photographs not meeting these requirements may not appear in the Dearborn High School Yearbook. If you have any questions concerning these specifications, please contact Mr. David Atkins, Yearbook Adviser, at the following address, e-mail, or telephone number.
19501 Outer Drive Dearborn, Michigan 48124 Mr. David Atkins, Advisor
Yearbook Staff Telephone: (313) 827-7235 E-mail: [email protected]
It is the responsibility of the student that his/her photographer delivers the required photograph to the main office by the deadline date. (Friday, October 20, 2017) Here are some common questions and answers about senior pictures for yearbook use. Please read them carefully, as we do not wish for anyone to be excluded from the senior section of the book. 1. What should I do first about pictures, and how soon should I do it?
Call a photographer immediately and get a sitting time scheduled for summer. The whole portrait-taking process sometimes takes months, which means you should have your picture taken no later than Aug. 30. After that there is no assurance that the photographers can get us a copy of your photo in time. The yearbook staff must meet publishing deadlines which are not flexible.
2. How do I send in my senior portrait digitally?
Senior portraits may be emailed to [email protected] by submitting an uncropped image in jpeg format at a resolution of 300dpi. Studios with several student portraits should send each portrait as an attachment in a separate e-mail. The file name MUST INCLUDE the student’s full name. If you do not receive a confirmation email, contact Mr. Atkins. A CD or DVD with the digital image can also be delivered. The digital file will be used only for the yearbook, no copy will be distributed to protect copy rights.
3. What are the yearbook picture specifications?
Pose: Traditional, formal, head and shoulder pose ONLY. Background: GREY, old master, traditional background. No environmental background. Other: No hands to face in pose, no strapless dresses (you look naked), boys – wear a tie or sport coat and tie, or suit. *** Fall sports athletes: consider your senior portrait before exhibiting team spirit with shaved or dyed hair. Also, consider your summer practice schedule when scheduling your sitting. ***
4. What is the due date for senior pictures?
The deadline for turning in your senior picture for the yearbook is Friday, October 20, 2017. 3. What is the purpose of these specifications?
The yearbook is a professional publication that reaches a large audience: our student body, our community, and beyond. That, along with production costs of over $40,000, require us to mandate uniform standards for all pictures. In order to assure uniformity we follow standard journalistic guidelines. While the traditional head-and-shoulder shot outlined above is required for the yearbook, we naturally encourage you to exercise your creativity for your personal senior portraits and encourage you to purchase creative space in the Senior Baby Advertisement section.

6. What will happen if I do not turn in a senior picture at all? You will not appear in the senior section of the yearbook!!! If cost is a problem, please contact Mr. Atkins, he may be able to help.
7. When and where do I turn my senior picture in?
Turn them in to Mr. Atkins who is located in room E-5 or email to [email protected].
