A Message from the President:

Hello Fellow Zontians:

I was thrilled when I received an invitation from my niece to attend her son’s

kindergarten graduation. I could picture the school sitting on several acres of open land

with baseball fields and various types of play equipment on the grounds. The school is

one floor and has a cafeteria, clean drinking water, clean restrooms and ample size

rooms for the children.

With this picture in my mind, I started to compare the Pennsylvania school to a school

in Madagascar. I am sure that you are wondering why I would compare these two schools and why I would have

Madagascar on my mind. I have been reading a great deal lately about Zonta International’s involvement with “Let Us

Learn Madagascar” and our International President’s visit to the island.

There are two stark differences between Pennsylvania and Madagascar: geography and income levels. A Pennsylvania

school surrounded by several acres of fields and trees compared to a school located on one of the poorest islands in the

world. This island is located about 266 miles off the east coast of South Africa. The children attending a Pennsylvania

free public school may come from a middle income family compared to the fact that approximately 90% of

Madagascar’s population is living on less than US $2/per day. School enrollment fees are prohibitively expensive for

families; thus, many families are forced to select one child to educate and the girls are often left behind.

Zonta International’s partnership with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF began more than 40 years ago. This partnership

continues today with the commitment of US $1 Million to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF from 2016-2018 to support the

“Let Us Learn” initiative to address barriers to girls’ education in Madagascar. “Let Us Learn Madagascar” is the

nation’s only program addressing issues of gender parity in education. The program is focused on three pillars: reaching

out-of-school children, expanding girls’ education and improving quality outcomes for learners.

The Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey elects to send one-third of all money raised each year to Zonta International in

order for ZI to continue to partner with UNICEF and other international organizations. Our Zonta mission is to

“empower women through service and advocacy.” After all, doesn’t empowerment start with education? If YOU are

receiving this newsletter and are not a Zonta member, please email me for more information about the Zonta Club of

Thursday, June 8, 5:30pm Radisson Hotel, Veranda Room (normal meeting room)

The Club’s new Zonta year begins on June 1, and it is now time to focus on what we as a Club would like to accomplish

1. What do you think the Club did well during the past year?

2. What should we continue doing during the next year – in other words what strengths do we have that can make

the most impact in the community?

3. What if anything should we discontinue doing?

4. What opportunities are there for us to expand our public relations campaign – where and how?

5. What service projects would you like to be involved with?

6. What, if anything, would hinder you from participating in Zonta planned activities?

7. What are YOUR ideas for new committees and service projects?

We will continue to hold three fund-raising events again this year. Below are the events along with the individual who

will be the Chair of the events.

Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey Advocacy Effort on Senate Bill 554

On Wednesday, May 24th, I met at the State Capitol with our own Ann Michael and Bethany Smith of

NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard), prior guest speakers at Zonta, to lobby for Senate Bill 554.

Ann and Bethany are with the Pennsylvania Anti-Human Trafficking Advocacy

Work Group. We were at the Capitol to advocate for the passage of SB 554, the Safe Harbor Bill. This

Bill provides immunity to sexually exploited juveniles and treats them as victims instead of as

criminals, providing services to them instead of incarceration.

Senator Stewart Greenleaf introduced SB 554 into the Senate which passed unanimously. SB 554 is

now in the House Judiciary Committee for review. It must pass through this Committee before it can go

to the full House for a vote.

Just a reminder…

If your summer travels take you on a cruise, or to a hotel room, Shalom House loves to

receive toiletries for individual use. These are perfect for their residents! You can either

bring them to a meeting or drop them off at my office and I am happy to deliver them.

Thanks!

A mission team from Ohio visited Shalom House recently. Denise shared, ”Our kids worked together with these young people from Ohio to get the garden ready ... planting vegetables for harvest.”

Dear Sister Zontians,

Thank you so much for the club’s donation to the American Cancer Society in John’s memory. Hopefully, gifts like yours will someday put an end to the all too early loss of life for people like John.

Thank you also for all your prayers, cards and other support through his illness and passing. It meant more to us than you will ever know.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your recent donation to Messiah College. The details of your gift are outlined below:

Date: May 5, 2017 Designation: Norma Gotwalt Scholarship Endowment Amount: $50.00 In Memory of: Norma Gotwalt

We are so grateful you have chosen to honor Norma by investing in the mission of Messiah College, which is to educate our students toward maturity of intellect, character and Christian faith. You are a vital part of our high calling to educate a new generation of servant leaders who will leave here prepared to make God visible to the world in significant and meaningful ways. Thank you for the positive impact you are having on their lives!

Sincerely, Jon C. Stuckey Director of Development

Save the Date for our first fund raiser of the 2017 –

2018 year…..Parking Cars at the New Cumberland

Apple Festival on Saturday, September 30

I’m not trying to rush the summer along but want to make sure everyone has this event on their schedule. This is a great, easy fundraiser. We get to visit with one another in the beautiful fall weather and raise service money while we do it! We will be using my office as our base for bathrooms, food setup, etc. If you would like to bring a snack, please let me know. I will have water, hot dogs, and coffee. I would like a few people to be at my office (406 Second Street, New Cumberland – my cell phone number is 717-903-0126) at 7:30 to help place signs and tape off lots. Everyone else – please plan on being there by 8:00. It’s not busy early, but that way everyone can be in place to greet the early birds. We will be parking at the Car Wash, at the back of Nick’s Restaurant, and the Allied Motors upper and lower lots. Feel free to bring your friends, spouses, and teen age grandchildren to help. Basically what we do (for new members or anyone who has not been here before) is park cars in the different lots within a two block radius. Parking for the Apple Festival is always limited so we are fortunate to have lots in prime parking locations. We do not physically park the cars, just direct people in to parking space. Then we collect $5 and hand out thank you notes that tell folks about Zonta and our mission. We are usually finished by about 2:00. If you can stay all day – that’s great. If you can be there for a few hours, that’s appreciated too. Please email [email protected] to let me know if you can help and the hours you are available so we can get our schedule together. Thanks!!

News from our sister club in Freetown, Sierra Leone

Dear Nancy, Kindly find attached Zonta Club of Freetown Newsletter 2015- date. Due to the past national problem we were unable to publish until now. We do look forward to resume a monthly publication. We are proud to announce that the club received a Certificate of Honour from the Mayor of Freetown City for outstanding service in the field of education and in its community health outreach programmes. Two of our members attended the last District Conference held in Accra Ghana this last April. One of them, a Zontian of over twenty years, was elected Lieutenant Governor of the District. On the 27th of May we will be celebrating International Menstrual Day with junior secondary school girls. We will be celebrating our 47th anniversary thanksgiving on the 11th June after which we close for summer break (rainy season out here). Do give our regards to Mr. Mengot (ed. Note: Mengel) and others. We look forward to seeing them again. Unfortunately we have not been able to visit their project area but I've heard report of their work out there. Eileen Hanciles

ZONTA DINNER NOVEMBER 8"

o mark Zonta's anniversary celebration (8th November), an outreach empowerment programme

was held of Vine Memorial Junior Secondary School under the theme 'Girls Education:

access, retention and performance.’ The guest speaker was Ms Antonio Howard, a young

graduate of the university who works for a television station. She encouraged the girls to resist

present day temptations and complete their education. A dinner was held that evening where

potential members were invited and given a talk about Zonta. Also present at the dinner

were visitors to the country who were closely associated with members of Zonta Club of

Harrisburg-Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Thank you to our members, friends and supporters for

giving the Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey the

opportunity to award almost $10,000 to a variety of

individuals and agencies as we wrapped up 2016-2017

year. Here’s a recap of our contributions!!

Zonta International Foundation - $3100

International Service Program ($1500)

Since Zonta International was founded in 1919, Zontians have been passionate about empowering women in

developing countries through international service. In the more than 90 years since its first international service project

was funded, Zonta International has contributed nearly US$15.5 million to projects benefiting women in 37 countries.

ZISVAW Program: Ending Violence Against Women and Girls ($750)

The most pervasive and least recognized human rights violation worldwide, gender-based violence affects women and

girls of every race, class, culture, ethnicity, age and country. Zonta International strives to promote and protect the

human rights of all women and girls and reduce the incidences of violence against them. Through funding from the

Zonta International Foundation, the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence Against Women (ZISVAW) Program

has provided more than US$5.5 million to support projects to prevent and end violence against women and girls in 42

countries.

Education Scholarships ($850) Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship ($300) Because Zonta International believes in gender equality, the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship

program helps women pursue undergraduate and master's degrees in business management and overcome gender

barriers from the classroom to the boardroom. Zonta International annually awards up to 32 scholarships of $1,000

each at the district/region level and 12 international scholarships in the amount of $7,000 each.

Amelia Earhart Fellowship ($250)

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship was established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart. The

$10,000 Fellowship is awarded annually to 35 women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or

aerospace-related engineering. It may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses

and degrees in these fields.

Our Fellows have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists, business

owners, heads of companies, even Secretary of the US Air Force.

Young Women in Public Affairs Award ($300)

Because Zonta International believes that young women are the key to women’s advancement in the field of public

service, it offers the Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award, which recognizes young women, ages 16-19, for

demonstrating leadership skills and commitment to public service and civic causes, and encourages them to continue

their participation in public and political life.

Zonta International awards 32 district/region recipients receive $1,000, and 10 international recipients are selected

from the district/region recipients to receive awards of $4,000 each.

Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey Scholarships ($2000)

Our Club offers $1,000 local awards for the Jane M. Klausman Scholarship and Young Women in Public Affairs. The

awardees at the Club level are then eligible for additional awards at the District and International levels, a potential

$1000 - $7000 additional to support our local winners in pursuing their education.

In June 2016 we awarded the Jane M. Klausman Scholarship of $1000 to Madison McCall who was entering her senior

year at Elizabethtown College majoring in International Business. She would like to pursue a career in sustainable

practices and utilize her knowledge of Spanish to help communicate with businesses around the globe.

In May 2017 we awarded Natalie Souders the Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship of $1000. She is a 19-year-old

sophomore at Lewis & Clark College and is seeking a degree in International Affairs, with a minor in Middle East

Studies. Natalie has studied 5 languages so far: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Arabic. On campus, Natalie is

involved with student government, working to change Title IX policy this year, and she was elected Chief Justice for the

next school year.

Shalom House ($4560)

Shalom House provides temporary shelter for women and children who have nowhere else to go, providing for their

basic needs: a bed, food, clothing, health and hygiene supplies, and a temporary address and telephone number.

Shalom House is committed to emergency sheltering for homeless women and children, transitional housing for

homeless women veterans and their children, and permanent housing for disabled, chronically homeless low-income

women.

Throughout the year, our Club has supported Shalom House with a variety of material and financial donations,

celebration of International Day of Women and their own fundraising efforts. We’re delighted to also provide them

with a financial donation of $4560 to support their operations and programs for providing substantial and

transformative opportunities to their clients.

These awards are possible through our fundraising projects throughout the year – Apple Festival Parking, Fall and

Spring Bon-Ton Community Day coupon sales, Christmas Wreath project, a unique Pumpkin Roll fundraiser (thanks

Peg!!) and individual donations.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible – your support makes it possible to provide meaningful and tangible support of Zonta’s mission in our local community and around the world.
