Volume XXV No.1 January, 2010 A Message from your President LCDR WES CHARLES As your new President for 2010, I would like to start off by hoping that everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Our Christmas party at the Ridglea Country Club was very entertaining and a lot of fun. In addition to installing our new officers and staff for 2010, Colonel Jim Costin presented our chapter with the MOAA 5-Star award of excellence we won for the year 2008. LtCol Bill Catterton and his staff did an outstanding job during that period and are to be congratulated. As we our now in the 2010’s, we have a continually greater challenge to address as a chapter. Primary amongst these challenges is securing reliable medical care. We are all aware of the attacks being waged on our medical benefits through continued decreases in payments to our doctors and hospitals. This attack has members being denied services by some practitioners because they can no longer afford to handle Tricare patients. We must continually communicate with our Senators and Representatives to stop these cuts and not forget about the military retiree’s interests while legislating new health care laws. This year, we are already presented with new challenges as a chapter. We have been able to secure new volunteers in some of our chapter leadership positions. Major Ray Uribe has volunteered to take over as 1 st Vice President arranging for our guest speakers and entertainment and Mrs. Kayren Harter is our new 2 nd Vice President in charge of dinner meeting arrangements. However, we have two positions open that are vital to the success of our chapter. The first, our Personal Affairs representative, is responsible for advising members on matters involving survivor benefits, recommended forms (e.g. wills, powers of attorney, records of investment accounts, etc.) members should have in place in case of emergencies, and act as our chapter contact to a member’s family in case of a member’s passing. As I said, this is a very vital position and our chapter needs a very dedicated member to step up to fill it. The second position is that of Legislative Affairs. This person is critically important in keeping our membership informed about issues our federal and state legislatures are considering. This person brings to the forefront those issues affecting all military personnel, both retired and active. In bringing those issues into the open, it allows each member to decide how these topics will personally affect them. Then either individually or as a chapter, we can address our legislators with our concerns and recommendations. This position is also very important to each member. Receiving the 5-Star award was due in no small part to the persons previously filling these two positions. Without their efforts, our chapter would be severely limited in its ability to serve its members. We are asking each member to consider dedicating a year of service to our chapter and volunteering for one of these two positions. I am looking forward to serving as your President for 2010 and know we will have a great year. Wes

A Message from your President

LCDR WES CHARLES

As your new President for 2010, I would like to start off by hoping that everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Our Christmas party at the Ridglea Country Club was very entertaining and a lot of fun. In addition to installing our new officers and staff for 2010, Colonel Jim Costin presented our chapter with the MOAA 5-Star award of excellence we won for the year 2008. Major Ray Uribe has volunteered to take over as 1st Vice President arranging for our guest speakers and entertainment and Mrs. Kayren Harter is our new 2nd Vice President in charge of dinner meeting arrangements. However, we have two positions open that are vital to the success of our chapter. The first, our Personal Affairs

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER – COL KIT CARSON

Bob Dylan blessed my generation with the sounds of “Blowing in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changing” In the late 70’s this musical genius came on hard times. He and his wife divorced, and he became enslaved to alcohol. Dylan titled one of the songs “Gotta Serve Somebody.” It has many verses and all make the same point: everyone’s a servant of someone or something - booze, sex, things, money, food, - something. What or whom do we really serve?

IN MEMORIAM

MRS. EVELYN CARSON. Evelyn Carson, wife of COL Clarence L. (Kit) Carson, passed away on Tuesday, December lst, 2009. Evelyn was born in Fairbury, Illinois in 1921 and graduated from high school there. She worked during and after her high school years to help support her family since her father had died in 1930 leaving her widowed mother having to work to support the family. Evelyn met Kit at a Rexall Drug Convention in Peoria and they began a correspondence which lasted after he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July 1940 and when he was promoted to Staff Sergeant in December of 1941, he persuaded her to marry him. Their 67 year marriage was blessed with two sons, Christopher and Keith. After 33 years in the Air Force, Kit retired from Carswell AFB and they remained in Fort Worth, making it their home. Evelyn was active in many organizations including the Fort Worth Woman’s Club, the Retired Officers Wives Club and the Girls Service League. She is survived by her husband, COL. Clarence L. (Kit) Carson, sons, Christopher and wife Teresa, and Keith and wife Pauline, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our deep sympathy to Kit and his family. COL JOHN C. PRICE. We learned this past week of the death of COL John C. Price, USAF Ret. on July 14, 2009. COL Price died due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident here in Fort Worth. Burial was on December 28th at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. COL Price was born in 1933 in Detroit, Michigan and had resided in Arlington for the past 21 years. He served in the Air Force for 29 years. COL Price is survived by his wife Ruth Ann, daughter Tracey, stepson Casey Kanel, stepdaughter Kelly Herzog and 2 grandsons. Our deep sympathy to the Price family. DOROTHY LEE WOOD. Dorothy Lee Wood, daughter of LTC Vernon L. and Else Dede, died on June 18, 2009. Dorothy was born in Maryville, Tennessee in 1954 and, being a child of an air Force family, moved often during her childhood years. She was a Summa cum Laude graduate of Bellevue University, in Bellevue, Nebraska. She was a published author and an accomplished business woman, having been one of the founding officers and Vice President of ShowBiz Pizza Place (Chuck E. Cheese). A philanthropist in the North Texas community she helped raise over $500,000 for charities. Dorothy served on many of the Southlake’s boards and development organizations. The Dorothy Wood Memorial Garden devoted to native Texas EarthKind Roses, has been dedicated in her memory at the Liberty Garden in Southlake, Texas. Her passion for nature will live on in the roses of the garden and the hearts of all who knew her. In addition to her parents, Dorothy is survived by her husband Stuart and her daughter Erin Michele Wood. Our deep sympathies go to all of the family.
