Parents and Students - Riding on the school bus is a privilege and not a “right.” School bus safety is one thing we take very seriously. MATH RULES!!!!! - The Math Team

George Halas once said, Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it.”

Our Fall season is close to coming to an end. We have started off with a spike from our Varsity Vol-

leyball team setting a 5-3 record working hard for city on October 3th. We will have a playoff on Oc-

tober 1st at Jardine. City Championship will be held at Topeka West High School, $2.00 at the door.

The Football team took the field with our Varsity coming off a victory over Shawnee Heights Middle

School 42-08. The JV team has a 2-2 record our next game will be French Middle School. City Foot-

ball will be at Hummer Sports Park October 9th, $2.00 at the door.

The girls tennis team will finish the season at Kossover on September 26th

for the city tournament.

Girls Basketball meeting October 4th 5:30 in the commons, practice begins October 10th. Students

must pass 5 classes in order to be eligible to play 2nd quarter. A physical must be on file with Mr.

Snyder dated after May 1st 2018.

6th Grade Math- We will continue module 1 until the middle of October. This includes finding and using ratios and rates, and finding percentages plus their equivalents as decimals and fractions. Then, we will start Module 2 which has fraction divi-sion, long division, mental math, and finding common factors. 7th Grade Math- The 7th grade math team is finishing up our unit over proportional relationships. During this unit, we found that our students came in with prior knowledge over ratios, which gave us the opportunity to dig a little deeper. Our next unit is called rational numbers. Students will return to the number line to model the addition and subtraction of integers (7.NS.A.1). They use the number line and the Integer Game to demonstrate that an integer added to its opposite equals zero, representing the additive inverse (7.NS.A.1a, 7.NS.A.1b). Their findings are formalized as students de-velop rules for adding and subtracting integers, and they recognize that subtracting a number is the same as add-ing its opposite. We are off to a strong start and hope to continue the momentum for next quarter! 8th Grade Math- Our 8th grade math classes have been working on angles and geometry. Students have been learning how to draw an angle and measure an angle using a protractor. They have also been learning about angle relationships such as: complementary, supplementary, vertical, corresponding, alternate interior, and alternate exterior. Now they are moving on to solving equations. Many of our classes are using manipulatives to set up and solve equations like our new hands-on-math kit. Manipulatives are a great way for students who need to be active to focus their energy on learning. The physical act of moving pieces to keep an equation balanced helps students make connects and build new neuropathways in their brain. Even when students don’t feel like the need extra help, we try to encourage the students that using manipulatives is about seeing the problem in a new way or thinking of different ways to solve the problem.

Gifted students are finishing their reading of Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. Students have completed the first of six units of their text, Collections Language Arts. Lesson plans are online at https://sites.google.com/a/tps501.org/norman-r-spero/lesson-plans and contain specific details and standards for each week’s lessons. Additionally, students have access to lessons at Classroom Google. Initial emphasis for gifted language arts students was determining main idea and supporting details of a non-fiction text and analyzing elements of plot of a fiction text . Recent emphasis for 7th Grade Gifted students has been to learn how to analyze a poem’s form and the use of figurative language and sound devices to understand their effects on meaning. Recent emphasis for 8th Grade Gifted students has been utilization of imagery and figurative language to write a per-sonal narrative. Students have received enrichment activity in vocabulary utilized in the Declaration of Inde-pendence and Constitution. Students possess a Sum Day worksheet for extra practice. 8th graders have start-ed quizzing each other during practice scholar bowl sessions.

Reading and Writing is so Exciting - Ms. Appelhanz

6th Grade: (Ms. du Bois, Ms. Morlock, Ms. Wooten) Unit 2: Animal Intelligence; Novel – “Among the

Hidden”

7th Grade: (Ms. Martin, Ms. Barnett, Ms. Morlock) Unit 2: Perception and Reality; Novels – “The Hunger

Games”, “The Giver”

8th Grade: (Ms. Watson, Ms. Pumford, Ms. du Bois) Unit 2: The Thrill of Horror; Novel - TBA

All grades will be taking the DBQ writing assessment in October. Don’t forget to come visit your LA

teachers during conferences on Oct. 24th & 25th!

Reading is Fundamental. In fact, it is one of the most important ingredients to becoming all that you can be. Reading develops your brain, provides a window into the world around you and helps you do better in all school sub-

jects. Most importantly, reading can not only help you become a better student, but a better person. You can learn from the brightest people whenever and wherever you choose.

As important as reading is did you know that:

800 million people around the world cannot read or write. Many families (and some schools) have no books for children to read. There are likely many children and people in our city that fall into this group. If you are already a strong reader,

helping others to read is an amazing gift that you can give. Here are some ideas below as to how you can help your student:

1. Let your child select books. When you visit the library, let your child select books. Try both fiction and infor-mational books, and ask the librarian for recommendations based on your child’s interests. The more interest your child has in a book, the more apt they are to read it.

2. Develop family reading routines and rituals. Find a regular time of day when you can dedicate reading into

your day. You can read in the morning, after school, or before going to bed. Simply setting aside 20 minutes every day can make a huge improvement in your student’s vocabulary and comprehension.

3. Talk to your child about what they’re reading. When you engage with your child and discuss what they’re reading you can make great connections from the reading and apply it to other subjects or relate it to real life experiences. If you can obtain an extra copy of the book, read it with them so you can see what they are or aren’t getting from the book.

What’s going on in Science??? - The Science Team

The 8th graders are still slowly moving through Earth's history. We have fin-ished looking at fossils and are now looking at how life has changed throughout history and how that compares to organisms alive today. Some of the similarities will be used to show how scientists came up with the theo-ry of evolution. Comparing different animal embryos, their anatomical struc-tures, and briefly comparing DNA will all be used as pieces of evidence. This will finish out the first Unit of study before moving into something new.

The 7th graders are working through physics concepts (Newton’s Laws) and the many forms of energy involved in motion. Students are applying these concepts and ideas in our energy labs. We will be moving on to energy waves and their application in our everyday lives.

The 6th graders will learn chemical processes and equations. They will construct and explain models of atoms and molecules. They will also learn that different atoms have different structure of and their sub atomic particles location, what they look like and how they are different from a molecule.

String Orchestra - Mr. Oathout

Our Winter Concert will come a month early this year!

It will take place on Monday November 5th at 7 p.m. on the commons area stage.

This will include 6th Grade Orchestra, and Seventh/Eighth Grade Orchestra.

For a majority of September, students have been focusing on using spreadsheets software like Mi-crosoft Excel and Google Sheets. We will wrap this unit up in the first week of October and then move onto other parts of office software like Google Slides/PowerPoint and Google Docs/Microsoft Word. Keep an eye out for week long projects that might pop up every once in a while as a way to take a fun break from some intensive keyboarding lessons. Please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS - Mr. Esau

SOCIAL STUDIES - Ms. Morelli

6th Grade Social Studies It’s been fun learning about the Stone Age people and the move from hunting gathering societies to farming communities. October is a busy month here at Jardine for our 6th graders. We will be writing our first comprehensive essay on the problems faced by the people who built the first civilization in Sumer and their solutions to those problems. Students will be analyzing in-formation on documents, adding that to information learned in class, and writing an evidence based essay. They will then be re-vising this rough draft in Language Arts and using it to complete the District Writing Assessment.

Following that, we will be exploring 7 characteristics of a civilization; stable food supply, technology, religion, system of government, the arts (art, music, and architecture), social structure, and writing. We will also learn about the first civilization in Sumer, and then about 4 empires that controlled the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Mesopotamia; Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and the Neo-Babylonian. 7th grade Social Studies 7th grade Social Studies is really moving along! We are currently working on the push/pull factors of immigration which is also our fall District DBQ (Document Based Questioning.) We will move on to water, our most valuable resource in mid-October. Students will be examining what pollutes water, the shortage of water around the world, and what we can do to preserve it. In 8th Grade United States History It is hard to believe that the 1st quarter is almost over! Students are getting into the groove of making sure they complete their work. Many are learning that 8th grade is a lot different than 7th grade. In 8th grade we are finishing up our unit on the Early Republic. We are learning about the struggles the first 4 Presidents had with foreign policy. The students will then learn about the War of 1812 and then take their first district writing assessment. We will then dive into Andrew Jackson’s Presidency.

Career and Life Planning Class

The first two weeks of the 2018-2019 school year has flown by and the majority of my 8th graders are settling

into the class.

So...What is this Class About?????

This semester class is designed to help each student explore a life-management plan for life beyond high

school. Strategies designed for caring for self and others, career success, and coordinating personal and ca-

reer responsibilities will be covered. Personal life choices made now and throughout life determine quality of

life for the present and future.

High School Credit as an 8th Grade Student

8th grade students have the first 6 weeks to decide on taking Career and Life Planning for high school credit.

A parent/guardian permission slip is required to receive credit. If students decides not to take the high school

credit or if they fail they may have to retake the class later in order to move on to other high school courses

If taken for high school credit, the GPA will stay with the student throughout the rest of their high school ca-

reer.

Please talk the options over with your student.

I appreciate you sharing your most precious possession (you children) with me. I am looking forward to a

wonderful semester. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have.

FROM THE MUSIC AND DRAMA DEPARTMENT - Mrs. Rowe

Some performances are just around the corner! 7th and 8th Grade Bands will perform at the

Jardine Football Classic at Hummer Sports Park. We will play on October 9. Come on out to

support our athletes and musicians!

The 7th and 8th Grade Band will perform for Jardine Elementary afternoon activities on Octo-

ber 31st! The Band is excited to perform!

“Wipeout!”

Wax up your surfboards, get out your beach blankets and catch the wave of this swell surf

musical! It’s just another sunny day at Avalon Beach until Mom and Pop announce they’re

selling their beloved surf shop and teen hangout. The snobbish developers from the nearby

ritzy Cove want Avalon’s stretch of sand... for a parking lot! But Mom and Pop’s daughter

Midge and all the loyal Avalon kids are determined — they’re not going to let that hap-

pen! Riptide, the local kahuna, enters the big surf contest to vie for the grand prize money

that will keep The Shack’s doors open, but the crowd from the Cove will do anything to put

the kibosh on Rip winning the prize money, including sabotage! When Riptide breaks his leg

in a surfing accident (thanks to the conniving developer’s son), it’s up to Midge to step onto

her Billabong and go up against the big boys. Pop, a former surfing champion himself,

comes through to help his little surfer girl in a sweet surfing cram session that gets all the kids

amped for the big event! This surf musical takes us back to a simpler time when life was

keen, the music was cool and the world was about to change. Gnarly, dudes!

Performances are November 15-16. Please call Tracy Rowe at 785-730-8125 or email

[email protected] if you have questions.

Dinner Theater information will be available soon! Check out the Jardine Middle School

COUNSELOR CORNER -Mr. Falk

Character Education Program

Jardine Middle School has a “Positive Character Program”. The program will recognize character traits established by Topeka Public Schools. These traits are Self-Awareness, Compas-sion, Responsibility, and Respect. The goals of the program are to recognize students for ex-hibiting positive character qualities at school, encourage positive behaviors, and make stu-dents more aware of their actions. Therefore, this program helps Jardine to be recognized as a safe and welcoming learning community.

Jardine grade level teams are recognize students for exhibiting positive character quali-ties by submitting a “Jaguar Paw” to Mr. Falk with the student’s name and positive behaviors written on it. Mr. Haire will read the students’ names that receive Jaguar Paws over the inter-com on the last day of the week.

Those receiving Jaguar Paws will receive a discount card for Sonic or a free slush at lunch. Their Jaguar Paws are placed on the wall in the Commons area to recognize these stu-dents throughout the school year. At the end of the year, the students will receive their Jagu-ar Paws with the message from the staff member to take home over the summer.

Career Cruising

During September, Mr. Falk and Ms. Sullivan have visited all Language Arts classes and had the students complete assessments on Career Cruising. Career Cruising is a program that students will use throughout middle and high school to explore careers that match with their interests and skills. They can also use it the request high school classes, create a 4 year plan, explore college programs, and look into financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Career Cruising links with Power School giving them access to the program at home. Please ask your student to show it to you and have fun seeing all it can do.

Red Ribbon Week
