Methods• Initial corpus = 99,921 posts from 46 pages of

social movements and grassroots media inBrazil, for a core-period of 3 years (2013-2016)

• A set of procedures were applied to organizecontent by thematic, relevance and time:ü identify the object of study and the problems to

be investigatedü define a method to collect data from Facebook

and persist locally (users information isanonymized by default)

ü proceed an exploratory analysis to understandbasic characteristics within the data and toremove noise

ü apply topic modeling to summarize the corpusü identify topic's representative terms and

explore its contextü identify key posts & events and explore

Objectives• To build a strong framework for a deep

content analysis on Facebook pages, as agood portion of 2000's historical narrativeson contentious politics are being told onSocial Network platforms like Twitter andFacebook.

• To offer social researchers an intuitive toolto investigate current social processesonline (e.g.: political mobilization) usingdigital methods.

ConclusionsAutomated topic modeling helps to reduce thesense of fragmentation by grouping a massiveamount of posts into a limited set of thematics.The technique is the starting point for a set ofvisual graphics:• Topics can be seen in accordance to the

similiarity among them or along the time.• Timelines show peaks of activity, indicating

where to focus a deeper content analysis.• Semantic networks are like aerial views on

the topic or page vocabulary, helping tounderstand which particular terms havebeen used in correlation to each others.

• Relative clouds of words are effective tocompare general vocabulary between twopages

Future workThis study in underway and is part ofinvestigations at a PhD and a Masters levels.Next steps include to deepen the contentanalysis. The final outputs should include aweb application where users can explore datasets from Facebook pages. The tool shouldautomatize some procedures to support socialresearchers in the use of Facebook content asa source for social phenomena investigation.
