A NOTE ON LANGUAGES AND NAMES

This compilation of names, dates, and family relationships, was prepared using records written in four different languages. American records were kept in English. Luxembourg records were kept either in French or German in the 1800s. And Catholic church records were usually kept in Latin, both in America and in Luxembourg.

Partly as a result of this, the names of individuals may appear in at least four different forms in the records: English, French, German, or Latin. In the accounts of ancestors I have attempted to present information on alternate forms of their names which may appear in the records. But in the lists of children I have given preference to the names as they appear in records of birth or baptism. And this may result in the appearance of Latin forms in these lists, although these Latin nameforms would rarely have been used in daily life.

#14 John Peter Simminger (m); JeanPierre Simminger (Luxembourg censuses)

son of Nicolas Simminger #28 and Maria Spranek #29

In his birth record John Peter Simminger is given the name Peter. And in the Luxembourg census of 1847 and 1849, he appears as Pierre. But in the censuses from 1851 to 1867, he appears as JeanPierre.

born 4 October 1847 MondorflesBains, Luxembourg (b)

died 1923 (cem@FG) buried Saint Mary's Cemetery, Herndon, Rawlins County, Kansas (cem@FG)

immigrated to the United States 1867 (00,10,20)

In the Luxembourg census of December 1867, his name appears in his father's household in Mondorf with occupation "menuisier", which seems to correspond to cabinetmaker, which is given as his occupation in the United States census of 1880. Later censuses give his occupation as farmer. The early years of his marriage were apparently spent in Milwaukee, as witness the baptism of the oldest child in 1873 and the Wisconsin state census of 1875. In 1880 the family was living in Random Lake, and by 1886 they were living in Rawlins County, Kansas, where he farmed in Elk Township.
