Understanding Balance : Let Go and

Let God

As I sat down to write this message

all that could come to mind was the

word ‘balance’. It hasn’t been the

easiest as an Al-Anon thinker to

move into this commitment as Chair-

person. I find that I want to be so

delicate that I’m creating boundaries

for others when they haven’t ex-

pressed any. Questioning my every

action for being too much or too lit-

tle. Yet, in other areas I’m stepping

on toes without intent. Simply put,

I’m not balanced, so I opened my

Hope For Today daily reader and

turned to page 211.

This page reminded me that “Step

2 offers us an option: sanity.” YES!

SANITY! Thank you Higher Power!

For me this commitment is about

turning it over and principles before

personalities.

I had to call my sponsor yesterday

because I wasn’t feeling balanced. I

was in my insanity. A situation had

triggered me and my instinct was to

react. Which I did. I felt misunder-

stood and lambasted. My sponsor

reminded me that I don’t have to re-

spond to everything and that it could

have been left out. Then we talked

about the principles of this program

and where they had applied to this

situation. I was gently guided to see

how I can do better next time. It was

so wonderful to end that call with

perspective and direction.

I can’t always Let Go and Let God

on my own. I’m just not wired like

that, but when I reach out to other

members in this program I often find

the solution I need to do exactly that.

February 1st is my Al-Anon birthday

and I am so happy I get to say that I

am another year older in this pro-

gram, but I still have to do it just

One Day at a Time. Proof is in this

story I share with you.

Love in service,

Nichole S.

Ask It Basket February 2017

An Al-Anon member writes;

What does Al-Anon stand for? I am familiar with the concept of Al-Anon, what I do not know is what

the phrase “Al-Anon” actually means/stands for.

Dear Al-Anon member;

In May 1951 Lois W., Chairman, and Ann B., Secretary, sent the first letter to the 87 family groups that

had previously written to the AA General Service Office. One question asked was, “Do you approve of the

name AA Family Group? If not, what do you suggest ?”

Approximately 57 responses were received. Some groups suggested names they were already calling

themselves such as, AA Associates, AA Auxiliary, Non-AA, Triple A, Women’s Auxiliary of AA, Friend-

ship, AA Helpmates, Twelfth Step Auxiliary. The majority, however, favored the AA Family Group name,

which Lois and the Committee changed to “Al-Anon” which is a contraction of the two words Alcoholics

Anonymous.

This decision came about when AA objected to the use of the letters “AA” in the name of the national

association of non-alcoholics since their Sixth Tradition stated that an AA group ought never lend the AA

name to any related facility or outside enterprise. The hyphen was included because there are, in many loca-

tions in the U.S. and Canada, AA Clubhouses that call themselves Alanon or Alano. The hyphen also identi-

fies Al-Anon as a Distinct organization.

This information comes from The World Service Office archivist: “Inside Al-Anon Extra” a publication

for groups of the Al-Anon Family Groups, Inc.
