360-683-6806 It’s June! We’re almost halfway through the year! Can you believe it?
I sure do miss our Shipley travelers! Our regional trips were so promising; so many of you had signed up for our Cranberry Coast adventure to Long Beach, WA. I have actually talked to the hotel and there is a chance of re-scheduling in September. Of course, we will have to wait to see if museums and restaurants have opened by then. This is tentative. Meanwhile, those of you requesting a refund should have received it by this time. When I have more information on the rescheduled date, I will call those of you who had planned to go.
As far as the trip planned for Chemainus in June: It is officially canceled. Butchart Gardens has opened up, but the Chemainus Dinner Theatre is closed for the season. This was such discouraging news: We will hope for next year!
JUNE 16! This is the date we were to have a presentation for out 2021 Collette trips. Unfortunately, we will need to reschedule (that must be the most common word in our vocabulary this year!) that meeting. Let’s hope it will be during the summer, but I will let you know as soon as it is decided.
Please consider these adventures for next year: domestically to Southern Charm, (March 2021) featuring South Carolina, Savannah Jekyll Island and more; and internationally, Shades of Ireland (April 2021). For info: [email protected]
Any trips this summer, if we are able to plan them, will probably be to the west side; outdoor activities such as Cape Flattery, Salt Creek, and Marymere Falls. When we are able, we will resume going to Clearwater Casino. We also could take a few shopping excursions; or fit in a garden or nursery. But we will have to play the waiting game before we make any firm plans.
When our Shipley bus trips resume, it will be different. We will have to wait until the time approaches before we make any set rules.
Oh, the places we’ll go… Beth

Seniors Supporting Seniors!
By Michael Smith, Executive Director
Imagine all the great stuff that happens in the last half of your senior year of high school: prom, homecoming, senior class trip, signing each other’s year book, talking with friends face to face about the future, hugs and smiles. Now imagine all that grinding to a halt and having your senior year marred by a pandemic! That is what is happening to our Sequim High School seniors . . . young men and women whose senior year experiences were cut short by the coronavirus and stay-at-home orders for their safety. Many are depressed, but most are making the best of a bad situation. They still plan to go to vocational school or college, and they still have hope, and a purpose for their futures. It is our tradition to give a little bit of tuition help to these future nurses, doctors, teachers, therapists, auto mechanics, engineers, hair-dressers, fire-fighters, and others who we know WILL be the ones taking care of us older folks in the years to come! We have done this by giving modest scholarships of $1,000 each out of a small percentage of the proceeds of our Annual Benefit Sale. This year, our scholarship fund was boosted in a huge way by Fred Chan, who left us funds in his will specifically to establish the Fred Chan STEMM Scholarship Fund. STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine) We look forward to publishing a letter that Fred wrote to us, shortly before his passing, in a future issue. We are told by his executor that in it he shared his life story and his hopes for our Center and the kids we help with scholarships. Before his estate is even settled, we decided to go ahead and get started helping kids with the funds that are on the way from Fred. Here are the kids we are able to help this year with our regular $1,000 scholarships and with the new $2,500 Fred Chan STEMM Scholarships.
The first $2,500 Fred Chan STEMM Scholarship winners, and their planned career objectives:
Samantha Church Kjirstin Foresman Darren Salazar Silas Thomas Drafting/CAD Dermatology Dentistry Physical Therapy
Our 2020 $1,000 Shipley Center Scholarship winners, and their planned career objectives:
Zen Graham Braydon Metzger Elizabeth Sutton Benjamin Wright Internal Medicine Welding Medical/Entrepreneur Theater/Singing
Congratulations to all the 2020 Graduating Seniors—We wish you the very BEST!

Health & Wellness Nuggets — Hints for staying healthy during trying times! (Source: Lynwood, WA Senior Center special newsletter issue)
Stay Busy and Connected! Using whatever technology you have available, schedule phone or video calls with friends, neighbors and relatives. Scheduling “meetings” gives both parties something to look forward to. If low vision or hand tremors keep you or someone you know from enjoying printed materials, check out wtbbl.org, the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library, or call 1-800-542-0866.
Take a Break from the News! Once you are reasonably informed and prepared, you’ve done enough. Give yourself a break from news for a day or two, then check back to see if anything truly new has developed. Psychologist Stewart Shankman of Northwestern University says, “There is a point where information gathering could become problematic.” Try listening to music, or binge watching a fun TV show for a change of pace, then consider exercise to really invigorate your body and your thinking.
Move it or Lose it! Resist the urge to be sluggish. Try to move around for at least 30 minutes a day. Clear an area so you will not trip on throw rugs or pet toys and try marching in place while watching TV, listening to an audio book, or enjoying music. Take a brisk walk around your yard or around the house. Get a bird feeder and count the many different birds that visit. Dance around the house, perhaps combining some great moves with your vacuuming!
Eat Well! Good nutrition is always important, but more so in times of stress. Take time to prepare and feed yourself nutritious food that tastes good. Use extra time at home to really plan your meals. Study the My Plate plan for older adults shown below. You can find more info at www.bit.ly/tufts-myplate
Meditate, Pray, Sleep! Reduce stress and worry by purposely taking time to relax, meditate, and/or pray. Avoid stressful news or topics right before bedtime, so you can get those all-important Zzzzz’s! Good night and take care!

the Front Desk.
Thank you! Your generosity is
appreciated.
Find the Hidden Object

Once you spot the object, email your name, phone number and the location (page number) to [email protected]. Or you can come into the Office and fill out a form and turn it in by the 15th of each month. A winner will be drawn from all correct answers. You can win $4 off at The Café or $4 in Activity Bucks.
Each month, we will be hiding a different object or animal. Good Luck!
LEGACY GIVING
It’s more than an act of generosity It is an important investment in the future
of our Center. To be part of this fine tradition, ask your attorney to add this, or other suitable language, to your will:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to Sequim
Senior Services, Tax ID number 91-1355592, 921 E Hammond St, Sequim, WA 98382,
(insert: dollar amount, percentage of estate, description of real estate or other property, nature of gift, or remainder of my estate).”
Contact: Executive Director, Michael Smith, to discuss legacy giving, and how you can
use beneficiary designations on various types of accounts to help
without changing your will.
SHIPLEY CENTER RESPONDS with resilience and purpose to COVID-19
For your safety, all activities and socials are cancelled until sometime after the Governor’s Stay-At-Home order is lifted.
We hope to re-open just as soon as it is safe to do so! To be “in the know”: Make sure we have your current email address, or

Spotlight on...Rusty the Rooster
By Margaret Cox
As most of you are, I am social-distancing, so it’s a little difficult to get out to interview people. As a result, I thought I would reprint a Spotlight article from June of 2014, six years ago now, which many people enjoyed at that time.
A little background for those of you who weren’t members then. For a few years, Shipley Center held a fund-raising Gala and Auction in the spring. This article
was written when Rusty came to our Center, after his harrowing experience at Seven Cedars. -----------------------------------------------------------------
Whenever you have gone into Shipley Center’s main office, have you ever looked up and seen a colorful tin rooster watching over the front desk? Often, he sports a jaunty hat or wears some other colorful decoration that signifies a holiday or season.
THIS is HIS story.
Meet Rusty the Rooster, Shipley Center’s New Mascot! (An interview of Rusty by the Shipley Center Newsletter, June, 2014)
SC NL: Welcome to the Shipley Center office, Rusty!
Rusty: Cock-a-doodle-do! Thank you.
SC NL: Can you tell us how you came to be here?
Rusty: Well, seems like I was brought here to be auctioned off at some fund-raising gala last month. While I was waiting here, I got a chance to look around and meet a whole lotta people, and see a whole lotta interesting things going on.
SC NL: Then, what happened?
Rusty: I was put on the stage in this big room, facing lots of people looking like they were having a party. It was kinda scary. I was just getting used to that Shipley Center place, you know? Next thing that happened, I am what they called Auction Item #1, whatever that means. I was held up and, after a lot of people called out numbers, I heard, “SOLD!” and was given to a table of people.
SC NL: How did that make you feel?
Rusty: I was sorta sad that I would not be going back to Shipley Center. But . . . that feeling didn’t last for long, as I found out that I was bought by a bunch of Shipley Center members who didn’t want me to leave! Hey! I was going home! I was going home! Home to Shipley Center!
Continued on page 11

SHIPLEY CENTER NEWSLETTER PAGE 11 June 2020
SC NL: And, what do you see for your future, Rusty?
Rusty: Well, it’s real great being in the front office where I can see so many nice people come and go, to and from all the fun activities at the Center. (Psst . . . I was told there are plans to dress me up so I can go to all the parties. Is that great, or what?)
SC NL: Yes, that all certainly does sound exciting, Rusty! All of us here are happy to have you here, too. Any last words?
Rusty: All I can say is a big, happy, COCK-A-DOODLE-DO!
Drop by the front office, look up, and say,
“Hi” to Rusty looking down from his favorite
perch between the front desk and Deb’s
(now Dee’s) office.

Rusty has so much to do at the front desk! His favorite thing is balancing the books!

I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain. I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name. I’ve gone to Kansas City, I’ve sang in the sunshine. I’ve been on the road again, with Georgia on my mind. Like a rolling stone, I’ve given peace a chance. I’ve put my camel to bed, and danced the last dance. Mr. Tambourine man played a song for me, I’ve whispered words of wisdom, let it be. I’ve fallen into a burning ring of fire, and walked the line, To all the girls I’ve loved before, you were always on my mind. I’ve been everywhere, I’ve been so lonesome I could cry. I’ve driven my Chevy to the levee when the levee was dry.
I’ve been to ltchycoo Park in a yellow submarine. I’ve made the scene in a time machine. I’ve done the Hokey Pokey and turned myself around. I’ve welcomed baby back to the poor side of town. I’ve followed the tracks of my tears down a long and winding road. I’ve kept on searching for a heart of gold. I’ve sought shelter from the storm. I’ve sat on the dock of the bay. I’ve rocked around the clock, on a sunshiny day. I’ve knocked on Heaven’s door, blowing in the wind. Joy to the world, those were the days my friend. Lay lady lay, in crimson and clover. It’s been a hard day’s night, the party’s over.
