This is the structure of the presentation. First, the basic philosophy underlying the programme will be presented. Basic philosophy of the programme

• A new digital age has arrived marked by the widespread use of digitaltechnologies in almost every aspect of human activity: economy, socialinteractions, politics.

• Profound transformations of economic, social and political systems.• Technology skyrockets our productivity and simplifies our every day life.

• But also many challenges: socioeconomic imbalances, resistance to change, bad use of technology, etc.

• Digitalisation and automation should be seen as opportunity and not threat.

• This realisation should start from schools and teachers!

Explaining the philosophy of the programme is important for understanding both its current success as well as its importance in terms of contributing to the modernisation of the Greek education system. Here one should be explicit about the challenges the globe is facing today in terms of how to best exploit digital technology for creating a better future for all. Because technology is causing profound economic, social and political changes. It brings goods but it also entails risks in terms of socioeconomic imbalances, inequalities, resistance to change and other. Yet, our philosophy as an university is that digitalisation is an opportunity and a threat and that this realisation should begin from schools and the teachers themselves. Which simply means that we have first to train teachers.

Basic philosophy of the programme

“Technology will never replace the great teachers but technology in the hands of great teachers is transformational.” George Couros.

• Technology will never replace great teachers.

• The best teachers do however use almost anything they can tocreate opportunities for all the students they serve.

• Abundant bibliographic evidence: The effect of a great teacher iseven more important for disadvantaged students and theirchances in life.

We also strongly endorse George Couros quote that technology will not replace great teachers but it will become a great tool in their hands. So we have to give them this tool. This is also a prerequisite for addressing educational inequalities. As there is robust evidence that the effect of a great teach is larger for disadvantaged students.

Teaching with Technology

• The in-service training programme “Teaching with Technology”has been designed to help teachers understand how ICTs enhanceteaching and enable students to acquire 21st century skills.

• The aim is to teach innovative free-of-charge and easy-to-usedigital tools to teachers of all levels so as to enable themdeveloping and organizing their own digital materials.

• At the same time, the program is harmonized with the UNESCOICT Competence Framework for teachers.

Now the idea of the programme Teaching with Technology is to empower teachers to use innovative free of charge and easy to use digital tools in their everyday practices in school such as develop and organising their learning material.

Learn digital tools for the presentation and communication oflearning material.

Familiarise with the design and evaluation of teaching activities withthe use of digital tools.

Overcome technophobia and cultivate a culture of openness totechnology.

The learning outcomes of the programme is firstly to understand the framework for the skills of the 21st which provides the conceptual foundations of the entire programme. And then the remaining learning outcomes is to learn digital tools for the organisation, presentation, communication and design of educational material. Finally, another implicit outcome is to help teachers overcome technophobia and cultivate a culture of openness to technology. This is important for the additional reason that the teaching personnel in Greece is aged. Partly due to the hiring system prevailing in public schools and partly due to the recent crisis which freezed recruitments for many years, the average age among teachers in public schools is currently above 40. And as we all know technophobia is positively correlated with age.

To whom the programme is addressed:

• In-service teachers of all levels who are interested in incorporatingmodern and dynamic digital tools into their teaching.

• Recent university graduates hoping to become teachers and who wantto learn how to handle modern digital learning tools and teaching.

• Teachers without permanent positions (substitute teachers) who wanta permanent position and need points for the appointment system.

• Teachers’ appointment in Greece is based on the rank applicants hold in a list derived fromtheir grades in a competitive exam, plus other points they might get for a variety of reasonsincluding certifications and preferences.

Basically the programme targets three types of participants: in-service teachers who want to learn digital tools, recent university graduates and teachers without permanent positions (this is another particularity of the Greek system). The two last groups gain points for the appointment system after the successful completion of the programme.

Duration, cost and evaluation

• Evaluation of each module consists of two evaluation sections:• The first is an online test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions that the trainee

must answer.

• The second section consists of the implementation of an educational activity that thetrainee must submit to the platform.

• The weight of the first part is 20 points and the second part is 80points.

• The trainee has successfully completed the course if havingachieved a total grade of at least 50%.

UNESCO’s framework emphasizes that is not enough for teachers to have ICT competencies and be able to teach them to their students. Teachers need to be able to help students become collaborative, problem-solving, creative learners using ICT so they will be effective citizens of tomorrow.
