Building a better Intranet

In a widening crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have been forced to have their employees work and communicate remotely. Traditional productivity tools like Slack and Zoom have been essential for some companies in the short-term, but in the longer term, more distributed organizations will need more centralized and purpose-built solutions.

This is where a company intranet can be vital to how employees communicate and are communicated to.

But how effective can the communication be at a time of conflicting reports and circulating disinformation? How behind are companies with clunky platforms or intranets with poor user experience?

In an attempt to understand how to build a better intranet that secures the centralized transmission of reliable information throughout the organization, Pulse asked 100 IT leaders on what features they look for in a robust and modern intranet.

Why do Intranets fail?

Delivery integrations

77% have opted for a customized solution, built either internally or purchased, whereas 23% have employed an out-of-the-box solution.

89% of executives agree that an unsatisfactory User Experience is the #1 reason for intranet failure. This suggests the vast majority of companies are looking for an intranet that is easy to use and administer, without incurring extra costs in having to train workers to use it.

Many now want to see a built-in collaborative approach to employee communications.

For those who said they would like an external, out-of-the-box intranet solution, 71% counted collaboration as the most important feature to have in an intranet.

The need for speed

48% of executives will only invest in an intranet that can be deployed within a month. However, these shorter deployment times aren’t in sync with the industry standard, with Nielson Norman Group estimating that the average time to create an intranet as 14 months.

At the best of times the length of deployment brings added risk as priorities change. In more difficult times, companies that don’t have efficient ways to keep employees on the same page will need to deploy at a quicker pace.

The digital workplace is largely there to make employee’s lives easier and, in testing times where more and more workers are working remotely to prevent the spread of COVID-19, employees will need a way to stay connected emotionally and productively. The ability to identify resources or connect with intra-company experts who can help becomes all the more important.

The data suggests that many prefer a more customized approach. But will this market undergo a SaaS revolution as other verticals have experienced?

The time might seem ripe for such a revolution given that many now are unsatisfied with their current intranet. When asked if they could replace their current intranet, 51% said they would prefer to use an external solution.
