Hurt By Christians

Getting hurt in life is inevitable; staying hurt is a choice. You can decide to remain a victim by

dwelling on how things should have been, or use the experience to grow stronger and wiser. At the Pool of Bethesda Jesus met a man who'd been lying paralyzed on a mat for thirty-eight years. "When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, 'Do you want to be made well?'" (v.6) After thirty-eight years, chances are this man saw his handicap as part of his identity. He'd been incapacitated for so long that he thought like a victim, "I don't have anybody to put me in the pool" (v.7). Translation: "Nobody cares." But Jesus did, and He commanded the man to get up and walk. Now, it took faith for this man to overcome those old ingrained feelings of hopelessness and self-pity, but when he obeyed Jesus he was healed on the spot. GOD never forces healing on you, even when you're hurting. You must want to get well, and make a conscious decision that by GOD's grace you can. Let's face it, the church is made up of flawed human beings who sometimes speak without thinking and hurt others. But that's no reason for leaving the church! "You're part of the body of Christ" (Colossians 3:15). Apart from the church you have no function, no food supply, and no fulfillment, so you begin to die spiritually. The truth is, it takes the same energy to choose healing as it does to choose helplessness - but the results are very different. One leaves you paralyzed by events, the other gives you hope for the future. Which one will you choose?

LORD Jesus, Heal Me!

Well, Hello May! You are probably wondering: why is she putting so much emphasis on May?– well one of the most obvious reasons is that this is the month is which I was married to that handsome James R. Reese, III!-yes, 33 years on May 8th! Another reason is that May makes me think about spring-it’s beauty, it’s warmth, and the coming of summer fun! There are so many things going on in May-so many observances. Let’s see, we have: Asthma Awareness Month; Date Your Mate Month; Foster Care Month; Older Americans Month; National Barbecue Month; National Bike Month; National Blood Pressure Month; National Chocolate Custard Month; National Egg

Month; National Foster Care Month; National Get Caught Reading Month; National Hamburger Month; National Lupus Awareness Month; National Lyme Disease Aware-ness Month; National Mental Health Awareness Month; National Photograph Month; National Physical Fitness & Sports Month; National Recommitment Month; National Sal-ad Month; National Salsa Month; National Skin Cancer Awareness MonthNational Strawberry Month; and National Mediterranean Diet Month, and I probably missed a few! Then there is Mother’s Day and Memorial Day-two of the most important days-other than May 8th-for me! But this is what May really reminds me of: 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV), “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. “ Flowers start to bloom; trees spread out their branches in fine greenery; butterflies flitter around; the grass folds out like a fine piece of green carpet-all things are new! May is a time for us to turn from the old and embrace the new-a new way of thinking-a new way of seeing the magnificence and glory of GOD and His creation-that means you too! After all, you are part of GOD’s magnificent creation! (Genesis 2:7). See yourself new-let the old pass away! That old which embraces our natural pride, love of sin, reliance on works, and our former opinions, habits and passions –the old of love of self and with it self-righteousness, self-promotion, and self-justification. Then you can add to the list of May observances: National Awareness of New Creation in Christ!

May is. . . . . . . National Mental Health Month

Addressing Mental Health Before Stage 4 (#B4Stage4)

When we think about cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, we don’t wait years to treat them. We start before Stage 4—we begin with preven-tion. When people are in the first stage of those diseases, and are be-ginning to show signs of symptoms like a persistent cough, high blood pressure, or high blood sugar, we try immediately to reverse these symptoms. We don’t ignore them. In fact, we develop a plan of action to reverse and sometimes stop the progression of the disease.

So why aren’t we doing the same for individuals who are dealing with potentially serious mental illness?

When you or someone close to you starts to experience the early warning signs of mental illness, know-ing what the risk factors and symptoms are will help to catch them early. Often times, family and friends are the first to step in to support a person through these early stages. Experiencing symptoms such as loss of sleep, feeling tired for no reason, feeling low, feeling anxious, or hearing voices, shouldn’t be ig-nored or brushed aside in the hopes that they go away. Like other diseases, we need to address these symptoms early, identify the underlying disease, and plan an appropriate course of action on a path to-wards overall health. Mental health conditions should be addressed long before they reach the most critical points in the disease process—before Stage 4.

Many people do not seek treatment in the early stages of mental illnesses because they don’t recognize the symptoms. Up to 84% of the time between the first signs of mental illness and first treatment is spent not recognizing the symptoms.

Mental Health America’s screening tools can help. Taken online at www.mhascreening.org, a screening is an anonymous, free and private way to learn about your mental health and see if you are showing warn-ing signs of a mental illness. A screening only takes a few minutes, and after you are finished you will be given information about the next steps you should take based on the results. A screening is not a diagno-sis, but it can be a helpful tool for starting a conversation with your doctor or a loved one about your mental health. This May is Mental Health Month; Greater Little Zion Baptist Church (GLZBC) is raising awareness of the important role mental health plays in our lives and encouraging members of the community to learn more about their own mental health and to take action immediately if they are experiencing symptoms of a mental illness. Mental illnesses are not only common, they are treatable. There is a wide variety of treatment options for mental illnesses ranging from talk therapy to medication to peer support, and it may take some time

for a person to find the right treatment or combi-nation of treatments that works best for them. (continued on page 9)

The scriptures tell us to pray about everything (Philippians 4:6-7: Do

not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and

petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to GOD. And the

peace of GOD which transcends all understanding, will guard your

hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.) So, why are there some pas-

tors saying otherwise? Mark Batterson, lead pastor of National Com-

munity Church in Washington, D. C. says, “I wonder how many of our

prayer requests are within our own power to answer? Yet we ask GOD

to do what we can do ourselves. And then we wonder why GOD doesn’t respond. Maybe it’s

because GOD won’t do for us what we can do for ourselves. GOD isn’t honored by prayers

that are within the realm of human possibility; GOD is honored when we ask Him to do what

is humanly impossible. That way, GOD gets all the glory!” In his article titled, Quit Praying!,

he goes on to say, that “There comes a moment when praying becomes a form of spiritual

procrastination. It’s time to stop praying and start acting.” He notes that there things that we

know what to do about, but we just don’t want to do it. So, is there a contradiction in what he

Lupus is one of the cruelest, most mysterious diseases on earth—an un-

predictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages differ-

ent parts of the body. Research shows lupus is more pervasive and more

severe than people think, and has an impact that the public doesn’t real-

ize. You can change that! Help the Lupus Foundation of America raise

awareness of lupus and show support for those who suffer from its brutal

impact.

Some facts you may not know about lupus…

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of

the body.

An estimated 1.5 million Americans and at least 5 million people

worldwide have lupus.

No two cases of lupus are alike. Common symptoms include joint pain, skin rashes, overwhelming fatigue and

fevers that last for days or weeks. Most people with lupus don’t look sick.

Lupus can impact any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys. Two leading causes of

serious illness and death from lupus are kidney disease and heart disease.

Lupus usually develops between ages 15 and 44 and it lasts a lifetime.

Lupus can strike anyone, but 90 percent of the people living with lupus are females. Men, children and teenag-

ers develop lupus too.

While people of all races and ethnicities can develop lupus, lupus occurs two to three times more frequently

among African Americans, Asians, Hispanics/Latinos, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans than among Cau-

casians.

While the causes of lupus are unknown, scientists believe hormones, genetics (heredity) and environmental

factors are involved—more research is needed to better understand the role of these factors in people with

lupus.

Lupus can be expensive to live with and treat. The average annual direct and indirect costs incurred by a per-

son with lupus can exceed $21,000 annually, a higher cost per patient than those living with heart disease,

bipolar disorder, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension and asthma.

Lupus can be difficult to diagnose. There is NO single blood test to diagnose lupus, and its symptoms mimic

those of other diseases, vary in intensity and can come and go

over time. More than half of those afflicted with lupus suffered

at least four years, and saw three or more doctors before ob-

taining a correct diagnosis of lupus.

Early diagnosis is crucial to preventing long-term consequences

of the disease. If you notice signs or symptoms of lupus, be sure

to engage your doctor and ask questions.

Looking for love in all the wrong places

Liz Curtis Higgs, Today’s Christian Woman -May 2015

Here's the truth, painful as it is to admit: Before I met the Lord, I spent a decade looking for love in all the wrong

places, convincing myself that if a man spent the night with me, he must (1) care for me, and (2) think I'm pretty. Oh, the foolishness of youth! And the heartache of feeling unloved and unattractive.

Four thousand years ago, Leah must have felt the same kind of heartache. From the moment she appears in Scripture, Leah is described as having "weak eyes" (Genesis 29:17). Make that "tender" (KJV), "delicate" (NKJV), or "pretty" (NLT) eyes. Yet Leah was eclipsed by her younger sister, Rachel, who was "lovely in form and beautiful."

Unfortunately, Leah's future husband, Jacob, had eyes only for Rachel. He worked for his uncle seven years in return for Rachel's hand in marriage, yet when the wedding night came, Jacob was so blinded by love he didn't notice the bride sharing his bed wasn't Rachel. "When morning came, there was Leah!" (Genesis 29:25).

At this point in the story, most people sympathize with left-out Rachel. Or ripped-off Jacob. But I hurt for Leah. This cruel deception was her father's idea, and her new husband, Jacob, clearly "loved Rachel more than Leah" (Genesis 29:30). Meanwhile Leah was yoked to a man who didn't choose her, love her, or want her. Ouch!

Unloved But Not Unseen

For all the hurting Leahs among us—those of us who are ignored by the men in our life, who feel unloved by a father, boyfriend, husband, or son—here's a word of hope: You are indeed loved, and your suffering hasn't gone unnoticed.

"When the LORD saw that Leah was not loved … " Imagine it! Almighty GOD, the Creator of the universe, looked inside a woman's broken heart. In her book Running on Empty, Jill Briscoe admits, "The hardest thing to believe when you are suffering rejection is that anyone is noticing you at all." Yet GOD noticed Leah. He cared for Leah. And He took away her pain as only He could: "He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren" (Genesis 29:31).

Not to worry. A few years later, GOD opened Rachel's womb as well. But first the LORD showed Leah she had value in her society and was indeed loved—if not by her father or by Jacob, then surely by her heaven-ly Father.

Leah gave birth to three sons in a row, her hopes pinned on winning Jacob's love: "Now at last my husband will become attached to me" (Genesis 29:34). But after the birth of each son, not a word was heard from Jacob. When GOD blessed her womb a fourth time, something happened inside Leah's heart. Three times she'd turned to a weak man for love. This time she turned to a strong GOD. "When she gave birth to a son she said, 'This time I will praise the LORD'" (Genesis 29:35).

What a woman! Instead of blaming GOD for what she didn't have, Leah praised GOD for what she did have: four healthy children and the Lord's unfailing favor. As Augustine wrote, "GOD loves each of us as if there were only one of us to love."

REFLECT Loved At Last

My lost decade of looking for love ended when I found a heavenly bridegroom named Jesus. I soon discovered I had a world full of sisters, all of them beautiful. That includes you, sis! On those days when your mirror disappoints you, the men in your life don't affirm you, the children you have—or don't have—leave you feeling less than adequate as a woman, know that the LORD sees your brokenness, hears your cry for help, and can fill all the empty places with a boundless love that never ends.

RESPOND 1. Though we may long for Leah to have the traditional happy ending-a loving husband-in truth she had a triumphant ending. What do Matthew 1:2 and Hebrews 7:14 reveal about Leah's role in a royal lineage?

2. How do the following verses encourage you that GOD sees your need, even during those times when you fear no one notices you at all: 2 Chronicles 16:9a; Job 34:21; Psalm 33:13-15?

3. For assurance that you're loved by GOD, read 1 John 4:9-16.
