PEM fasteners provide strong, quality threadsin metal and P.C. boards too thin to be tapped.PEM fasteners are easily installed byinserting them into punched or drilledholes and applying parallel squeezingforces. In ductile materials, as the installationforce is applied, part of the sheet cold flows into an undercut beneath thehead thereby making the fastener an integral part of the sheet. A serratedclinching ring prevents the fastener from rotating once installed.

PEM brand broaching fasteners for printed circuit boards and non-ductile materials are pressed into drilled mounting holes and heldpermanently in place by an interference fit. Both self-clinching andbroaching designs withstand substantial pushout and torque-out forces.

PEM Fastening Systems also offers weld nuts. PEM weld nuts are roundthereby eliminating indexing, and have pilot shanks so that they are self-locating in panel holes and protect threads from weld splatter.

PEM brand fasteners are available in many variations as indicated on thefollowing pages. Selections of threaded fasteners include free-running,self-locking, floating, and blind hole types meeting Unified, ISO, andMIL standards. They are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, andaluminum.

Also available is hardware for special industry applications such asCONNECT’R WARE® fasteners for connector mounting, AUTOSPEC®

fasteners for automotive applications, and SI® brand inserts for plastics. Our new STICKSCREW® system offers manufacturers an extremely fast, accurate and efficient method of small screw insertion.

PEMSERTER presses are designed to safely, reliably, accurately, andquickly install PEM fasteners. When using PEMSERTER presses toinstall PEM fasteners the entire fastener installation process isstreamlined. No matter how complex or simple an installation challengemay be, using the PEM fastener and PEMSERTER press system willprovide you with quality results.

PEM Fastening Systems has been manufacturing these quality fastenerssince 1942. Today, PEM self-clinching fasteners are used throughout theworld by manufacturers of electronic, communications, aerospace, andautomotive equipment.

PEM® fasteners and PEMSERTER® presses are briefly described on thefollowing pages. Complete data and samples are available for specificfasteners on request.

TRADEMARKS

To help you identify genuine PEM® brand fasteners, most are marked by one of our registeredtrademarks – “PEM” or “one and two groove”trademark on internally threaded fasteners and a“recessed dimple” on the ends of studs. To be sureyou are getting genuine PEM® brand fasteners lookfor the PEM® Trademarks.

SELF-CLINCHING FASTENER INSTALLATION DO’S AND DON’TS

“Do’s”

provide mounting hole of specified size for each fastener.

make certain that shank (or pilot) is within hole before applying installation force.

apply squeezing force between parallel surfaces.

apply sufficient force to totally embed clinching ring around entire circumference and to bring shoulder squarely in contactwith sheet. For some fasteners, installation will be complete when the head is flush with the panel surface.

“Don’ts”

install steel or stainless steel fasteners in aluminum panels before anodizing or finishing.

deburr mounting holes on either side of sheet before installing fasteners – deburring will remove metal required forclinching fastener into sheet.

install fastener closer to edge of sheet than minimum edge distance indicated by manufacturer – unless a special fixture isused to restrict bulging of sheet edge.

over-squeeze. It will crush the head, distort threads and buckle the sheet. Be certain to determine optimum installationforce by test prior to production runs.

attempt to insert fastener with a hammer blow – under any circumstances. A hammer blow won’t permit the sheet metal toflow and develop an interlock with the fastener’s contour.

install screw in the head side of fastener. Install from opposite side so that the fastener load is toward sheet. The clinchingforce is designed only to hold the fastener during handling and to resist torque during assembly.

install fastener on pre-painted side of panel.
