Agong sounded loudly, rewrberating through the assembled crowd. Shouts and cries went up fromthe spectators, calling out for blood and death and, aOOveall, entertainment. The two figures in themiddle of the arena stirred. The final round of the tournament had begun.

The reigning champion, Horatio the Magnificent, a bladesman famous in foUl countries andinfamous in sevf'n more, carefully began circling towards his opponent, his bastard sword held withconfidence and ease in a single hand, his polished and gleaming shield held in a proper defensiveposition. He had heard about the challenger, and his... unique... fighting style, but he hadn't had thechance tosee him, and he wasn't going to take any unnecessary chances.

At the other end of thearena, Horatio's opponent, Valygar, did not make fora very impressive sight.Unlike his opponent, whose plate armor clinked and clanged with ewrycautious step, Valygarwasunannored, wearing only a set of bright red robes. He held no weapon and no shield, his hands hanginglimply from his sides. He was not cin:ling along with his foe, not ewn pivoting to follow him. He seemedto becompletely unaware of his opponent, but was simply staring off into the distance.

The crowd continued to shout for action. Some few jeered the challenger, calling him out for his lackofactivity, but most of the crowd had seen his earlier fights, and knew better. Theywaited, anticipationmounting.

\Vhen Horatio's cautious progress had gotten him within about 50 feet ofhis unanned, unarmoredopponent, Va!ygar let out a f&lJsome, prilllill scream of rage and hatred which drowned out the cat-callsand cries of the crowd, like a firestorm raging through the airof the colosseum and leaving nothing butsilence in its wake. The unmistakable aura of something supernatural began to surround him, glowingwith an unearthly red light, as though his bodywere engulfed in pale, translucent red flames.

As the crowd (and Horatio) watched in stunned silence, the supernatural warrior let out anotherscream, every muscle in his body tensing from what appeared to bea horrible pain. As he did so, the fieryaUla which surrounded him COdlesced into a specl:Tal, ruby-red armor, which glowed with IlliIgiC, but wasstill faintly translucent, appearing as though it were IIldde of glass, or, Horatio thought with a slightshudder, as though it were only half there.

That was not the only change to come over the warrior, however. Two whole anns of the spectral redforce had grown from his side, and he now held four scimitars, &lch ofwhich appeared as though it wereIlliIde of nothing but alIlilgical fire, the shade of freshly-spilled blood. Valygar's face was covered by aghostly red helmet, and his features were obscured and hazy, but his eyes glowed through a brilliant, purewhite. Horatio felt as though those lights were pinpoints ofthe warrior's rage, focusing on him as thoughto bum through his very soul.

Wordlessly, Valygarcharged, his four scimitars whirling in a fiery blaze, the complicated pattern ofhis movements melding into a blur of spectral fire. Remembering himself just in time, Horatio raised hisshield to block the attacks, and wasn't ewn remotely surprised when the hazy, transparent swords rangagainst his armas though they were harder than steel. Feeling himself pushed back by the onslaught, inno position to retaliate, Horatio murmured hollowly .....what are you?"

"I am a spirit warrior," his foe replied in a voice that boomed out as though it were being spoken bysomething twice the speaker's size, "I am the power of the legendaryGilgamesh, walking the world onceagain. I am your doom, warrior, and once I have proven myselfagainst you I shall be the doom ofan ewngreater warrior, and then another, until all the world knows that I am the most powerful warrior ofall,and none reillilin to challenge my supreIIldCY!"

Horatio didn't know how to respond to that, so instead he took advantage of the warrior's dividedattention to beat a quick retreat, quickly falling back several steps and getting himself free of thewarrior's flaming blades.

His ploy onlyserved to enrage his foe further, and Valygar let out another primal bellow and flunghimself at his opponent, his blades whirling high and low. Horatio ducked, narrowly bringing his headbelow the two higher blades, and moved behind his shield, which gave a dull clang as the two 10000rblades struck its surface with more fon:e than a mortal man should be able to muster. Desperately, heswung his sword up in an attempt to strike back at this hurricane of a foe.

Valygar's annorwasas real as his blades, h<m~r, and despite their semi-solid appearance the swordglanced hannlessly offgleaming blood-red breastplate the spirit warrior wore. Valygar let out a howl offury and a torrent of fire poured forth from his mouth, scorching and blackening Horatio's shield.Horatio dropped it and scrambled backwards, scrabbling to get up and concerned only with putting asmuch distance as he could between himselfand the flaming warrior.

The crowd booed and jeered at Horatio, calling out that he was a coward. Others simply encouragedthe spirit warrior, crying out suggestions on how Horatio should be killed. Both fighters ignored them.Horatio was too busy trying to think of any way to somehow survive the fight against his monstrousopponent, and Valygar's thoughts were forused purely on his rage.

He stalked slowly towards Horatio, who had been slowly backed into a comer of the ring. Each stepwas slow and purposeful, as though the spirit warrior",-ere putting all his heart and mind into each andewry movement. He seemed to be moving more slowly than before, and hewas leaving a trail of sweatacross the colosseum floor. Horatio had an idea.

He waited until the spirit warrior was about to charge, then threw his sword through the air wildly,not really hoping to hit his foe, merely to distract him as Horatio scurried away, endeavoring to get as faraway from the raging warrior as he could. The thrown sword did little to slow Valygar, h<m~r, and hecharged after Horatio, as intent to bring the fight to a dose as his opponent was to drag it out.

His shimmering ruby blades cut through the fleeing fighter's annor like so much butter. There wasacry, and Horatio collapsed to the ground. Valygarwasn't far behind him, collapsing to one knee andpanting as his ghostly annor and weapons evaporated. He remained there, panting heavily and trying tocatch his breath, until they came out to gn.-e him his award.

He had done it.

He had won.

He was the greatest warrior.

This book has beena long time in the making, albeit in different forms throughout the months. In averyreal way, this was the first book that we here at Ne<:romancers of the Northwest started working on,though it didn't look much then like it does today. Originally it was going to be 'The Book of Fusion,"and was going to bea full-size book with a number of different classes, prestige classes, and the like. Wede<:ided early on that we wanted to open with Liber V,lmpyr, and switched over to focus on that, shelvingthe "Book of Fusion" (which quickly changed names to 'The Book of Souls") for a later date.

We continued to work on it in the background for a long while, but all three of the base classes hadsome difficulties, and more than one had to be basically re-built from the ground up. The spirit warrior,the class included in this book, was one of those classes, and had some serious revision in its history. Somuch, in fact, that ifyou held up the finished product next to the original first draft, you'd probablynever have any idea that the two were in anyway related.

There were always more exciting-and easier-proje<:ts to work on, and so, over the weeks andmonths, the "Book of Souls" kept being pushed back and to the side, as l.t"e focused on these other things.When we made the switch to our current business plan of making "mini-books," it seemed unlikely thatthe book would ever see the light of day. Then it occurred to me that, though a large amount of the bookwasn't}"et fit to see print, the spirit warrior class was basically done, and, unlike the other two majorclasses in the book, could stand alone without adding too many weird rules that would be difficult to dojustice in a mini-book.

I wasn't entirely correct there, and the spirit warrior still required a good deal of revision before Iwas satisfied that it met our standards ofquality-it's been a long time since those early days, and thingsthat seemed like great ideas then don't seem so f,lntastic now. I think that we got so wrapped up in thenovelty of the overallstrucrure of the class (transforming into one ofa variety of "exemplars," taking onspectral anns, annor, and ability score adjustments and gaining a slew of special features), that we forgotto make sure that the class W,lS cool and interesting in play, as well as in theory. When I first sat down totum this into a "mini-book," more than halfthe infusions consisted of ''you gain tv.o feats." There are stilla few infusions like that (primarily because some of the infusions use attack fonns that really need thepla}"erto have a feat or two, like Two-Weapon Fighting or Precise Shot), but the largest change that wasmade from the spirit warrior that we thought was finished for the "Book of Souls" and the one you seehere todaywas making the infusions-the class's real bread and butter-a lot more fun and exciting,and, when I could manage it, a little more innovative, as l.t"ell.

I look forward to someday unearthing more treasures from lbe Book of Souls," as I am fairly fondof it, but I think it may be a while before we're able to do so. As I already explained, that in particularproje<:t became pretty tangled and messy by the end, and it would bea mistake to think that that lostrelic's bounties are sitting there, just waiting for us to drop them in a book: those were wild and halcyondays, and, if the spirit warnorwas any indication, we've come a long way since Necromancers oftheNorthwest got its start. Any gems we may be sitting on will need a lot of polish before ...."e can get themout there, and I have no intention of releasing anything half-done.

Nowthat I'veexplained why the spirit warrior has such a special place in my heart, let me just saythat I hope that by the end of the book it will find a place in yours, as well.

Making a Spirit Warrior

Nearly all spirit warriors are melee fighters ofsome kind. Though their ability to channelancient warriors provides them with boosts totheir ability scores, and also creates spectral armsand armor for them to usecluring battle, makingthem a potent force- on the battlefield, theexemplar doesn't do all of the work, and the spiritwarrior must still trilill to stay in perfect fightingmndition if she wilnts to be successful asa warrior

Ability Scores: A spirit warrior's choice ofability scores will depend heavily OIl whichexemplars she intends ro use Ihe most, and howshe intends to use them. A spirit .....arrior·s choice of exemplars willhave a major impact on a number of her otherclass features. A spirit warrior can onlychooseinfusions and devotions from exemplars she haschosen to associate with, and each exemplar's

manifestation is different, granting access todifferent abilities and powers. A full explanationof the benefits provided by each exemplar isprovided below, along with a short description oftheir personalities and rhe legend ofhow theybecilIIH' an exemplar.

Manifest Exemplar (Su): As a swift actionwhich does nor provoke ataclcs of opportunity, aspirit warrior can call upon one of her chosenexemplan;, drawing on his power to gram heruceptional abilities in combat. This bas anumber of benefirs. wIUch raJ.:e a variety ofdifferent forms depending on rhe natu~of theexemplar being manifested.

Additionally, while manifesting an exemplar,a spirit warrior gains access to all infusions anddevotions associated with that exemplar, as longas she has unlocked them. A spirit warrior cannever benefit from an infusion or devotion whichshe has not unlocked, nor can she benefit fromone exemplar's devotion or infusions whilemanifesting another exemplar.

Manifesting an exemplar in this way isexceptionally mentally taxing, and it is difficult tomaintain such a connection for long. At thebeginning ofeach round in which the spiritwarrior is manifesting an exemplar, she mustsucceed on a Will save (DC 10 -+ the number of

infusions the spirit warrior has unlocked for thatexemplar -+ 2 per previous attempt) or lose herconcentration, immediately ending themanifestation, and causing her to becomeexhausted for 10 minutes. 'Nben this exhaustionsubsides, the spirit warrior is futigued for another10 minutes before fully recovering from this shock.A spirit warrior can willingly stop manifesting anexemplar as a standard action which does notprovoke attacks of opportunity. Doing so rendersher fatigued for I minute.

A spirit warrior cannot manifest an exemplarwhile f<'ltigued or exhausted.

Devotion: At 1St level, a spirit warriorchooses an exemplar which she favors above allothers, known as her primary exemplar. 'Nbenmanifesting that exemplar, she gains the benefitsof his devotion ability as a reward for her faith.

Infusions: At 2nd level, and each levelindicated on Table J-l: The Spirit Warrior, thespirit warrior unlocks a new infusion. Each spiritwarrior has eight infusions., and each infusion has

A number of infusions grant the spiritwarrior access to bonus feats while the spiritwarrior is manifesting that exemplac. As long asthe spirit warrior has unlocked that infusion, shecounts as having those feats for the purposes ofanything which requinos those feats as aprerequisite. Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh was the king of an ancient city­state known as Uruk. He was a mighty andpowerful warrior, and did a number ofexceptionally heroic things during his life, includ­ing slaying the great demon Humbaba and theBull of Heaven, crossing the river ofdeath, andtravelling to the bottom of the ocean. After thedeath of his close friend Enkidu, GilgaIDeshvowed to overcome his humanity and becomeimmortal, but was not quite able to convince thegods to grant him such power. Instead he onlyhalf-ascended, becoming an exemplar: livingeternally, but unable to affect the world, only ableto watch it.

Gilgamesh is a warrior of raw emotion. Hewears his feelings on his sleeve, and is prone tointense mood swings. The most common amongstthese an' blinding rage and abject depression, ofwhich the fonner is far more deadly.

Solomon

The king of an ancient city-state, Solomonwas known far and wide for his wisdom and goodworks. Initially granted great insights and mysticalpowers by the god he worshipped, as Solomon'syt'arsadvanced he became prideful. Though hecontinued to perfonn grt'atworks for his people,and his wisdom continued to be legendary, hebelieved himself, as his god's highest mortal agent,to beabove a great number of religious laws. Helived in excessive opulence, with 700 wives and300 concubines. Eventually his god had hadenough, and cast him out, forsaking him andforcing him to live the rest of his life asa peasant.During these trials Solomon came to understandthe error of his ways, and was allowed partialredemption by ascending to become an exemplar.

Solomon is wise and kind, and believes thatthe needs of the community should be placed overthe needs of the individual. He believes firmly inthe rule of law, believing that laws bring aboutpeace, which is the greatest good.

SunWukong

Born from an egg made of stone and purechaos-stuff, Sun Wukong was also known as themonkey king due to the fact that he originallylived in the wild amongst a tribe of monkeys. SunWukong eventually outgrew that mountainhome, however, and enrolled in a monastery,where he mastered a number of mystical andmagical arts. His power only continued to grow,untill"Ventually he began to create trouble for thegods themselves. In order to make him moremanageable, they granted hima position in the

heavens, but when he discovered that this was atrick, and the position they offered was as aguanlian of the heavenly stables, he flew into arage and staged a rebellion against the gods. Susanoo

Susanoo was once a god of storms andwinds, but was banished from the he.wens forquarreling with his sister, Amaterasu, and fordisobeying the greater gods. He descended to themortal world and lived as a travelling swordsman,travelling from land to land in search of greatdeeds he could perfonn to prove himselfworthyto return to the heavens. Among these wasslaying a great, eight-headed serpent by trickingit into getting drunk and then slaying it while itwas asleep. Though Susanoo never regained hisposition in heaven, when it came time for him tomove on he was able to ascend as farasanexemplar.

Susanoo isa clever and patient warrior.Rather than confront problems head-on, heprefers to use his greater intelligence and cunningto outwit his opponents, fighting smart, not hard.

devout, bul rarely is the focusof their religiousadoration an anual god. Instead, many spiritwarriors come from, or in some cases found,small warrior cults devoted 10 one or more of theexemplars they channel. These cults venerate theexemplar in question, giving up offerings andsinging praises about his mightyaccomplishmellts. In a way, spirit warriors couldbe vit"A~ as the derics of these quasi-deities. asit is from Ihem that theydraw most of theirfighting power.

Notables: Because spirit warriors are sodriven to perfonn great deeds worthy ofimmortality, those that survive tend to gain greatnotoriety. That said, spirit warriors in general arefairly rare, and many of those few die earlydeaths in their quest for glory. The most notablespirit warrior currently alive is Salazar the Bold, adevotee-of Gilgilmesh who iscurrently leading adesperate-but so far Il."markably successful­rebellion against the dragon-king oflirsa, andwho has twice faced that dreaded tyrant in singlecombat and lived to tell the tale. The mostfamous spirit warrior ofall time would probablybe Tyronius, a devotee of Solomon, who slew theancient god Jevraille in an attempt to claim hisplace. Though he slew Jl'VI'aille hewas struckdown by a number ofother gods, who wanted todiscourage such behavior in mortals. Rumor hasit that Tyronius is now, himself, an exemplar, butif so he is not a very common one.

Organizations: Generallyspeaking, spiritwarriors do not congregate or fonnorganizations. Each spirit Wilrrior is typicallyconcerned with his or her own personal glory, orwith some driving purpose which causes them toseek out the power ofexemplars, and so theyhave little concern for others of their kind, whoare interested only in their own advancement orcauses. That said, spirit warriors who shaIl."anexemplar often fee-I a certain kinship, and insome cases even fonn hero-worshipping cultstogether. On raIl." occasions, when one or morespirit warriors are more concerned with the gloryof their chosen exemplar than their ownpersonal glory, these organizations mightundertake actions on behalf of their exemplar,occasionally going to Wilr with similar cultsdevoted to other exemplars.

NPC Reactions: Most people considerspirit warriors to be a mixof eerie and insane.Few people trulyunderstand the nature ofmanifesting an exemplar, and, upon seeing thespirit warrior become wreathed in spectral lightand equipped in spectral gear, assume that she ismore a mage than a warrior. At the same time,the spirit warrior's seemingly-suicidal drive to

find more and moIl." difficult and life­threatening challenges causes most people tosimply shake their heads at the spirit warrior's~foolishness."Still, a great many people­especially the young-have great admiration forthe dedication, drive, and recklessness that mostspirit warriors display in their quests forimmortality.

Spirit Warriors in the Game

For GMs: Spirit WilrriOrs have the potentialto be very powerful. Their class provides themajority of their annorand weapons for them,leaving them with a lot ofextra spending moneyfor magical items and gear. The powers that theclass grants all.'' not insubstantial, either, and thefact that the spirit warrior has access to threedifferent exemplars gives them a variety ofoptions for approaching most situations.

The major limiting factor on the spiritwarrior, and the thing that is designed to keeptheir power level roughly in check with otherclasses, is the fact that the spirit warrior can onlyremain effective in comoot for a relatively shortperiod of time: as soon as she fails her first Willsave, she becomes dramatically less powerfulthan most other characters. In this way, a spiritwarrior will likely be very pmI'"erful in the firstfew rounds of combat, but if the fight doesn'tend quickly she will find herself in a veryawkward position.

Ifyou find that the spirit warrior is notbeing challenged (especially if the spirit warrioris the only character who seems too powerful forthe encounters you are providing), considerfinding ways to prolong your encounters, forcingthe spirit warrior to battle the clock, and creatingtense moments where a great deal may hang on asingle Will save. On the other hand, ifyou findthat your spirit warrior rarely makes it through afight without becoming worthless for a fewrounds, consider creating some shorterencounters where the spirit warrior can reallyshine, or else lowering the IX of the Wlil saves(though not by much).

Most players of spirit warrior characters willlikely enjoy playing up the supernatural origin oftheiranns, annor, and abilities, or else theirconnection to their exemplar. Though someplayers will choose the spirit warrior purely forits mechanics, it is a class that is heavily investedin its flavor, and so you should do your best todetermine what flavor aspect of the class yourplayer likes, and try to play that up.

For players who enjoy the supernaturalangle, this may be as simple as having enemiesbecome uncertain and "spooked" at the sight ofthe glowing annor (this does not necessarilyrequire any mechanical effect), or even justgiving the player an opportunity to describe theway hisarmorglows and pulsates with an eerie,translucent light. In general, you shouldminimize spirit warrior NPCs, as these will de­tract from the specialness of the player's spiritwamor.

For players who are drawn to the spiritwarrior's connection with a specific exemplar, tryto find ways to tie that exemplar into thecampaign world and, if possible, to the storyofthe campaign. Allow the character to meet NPCswho are also drawn to that exemplar, who may beeither friend or foe. You could also bring theexemplar's opposite into the mix as well,providing a convenient target for the playercharacter. In general, treat the character asthough she were a cleric of the exemplar, as far asfinding ways to tie her faith into the game, andyour player should be happy.
