NONI - A New Age Fruit

A boon to mankind

Nature’s treasures are boon to mankind. It has blessed humanity withits wonderful gifts that could abundantly supply and take care of all hisneeds. Herbal fruits, shrubs and leaves are among those treasures, used by living creatures since time immemorial to supplement theirfood needs. Noni - Morinda citrifolia, a gift of nature is one suchtreasure, used by the people to cater to their health needs for thousandsof years.

Noni - Nature’s gift

Noni is nature’s abundance bundled in one fruit. Noni is from thebiggest pharmaceutical unit in the world – “Mother Nature”, the CEOof this pharmaceutical unit is God. Mother Nature knows what nutrientsour body requires and in what combination. Nature works holistically. No single product on earth helps so many different health conditionsbecause none of them are made by God. They are made by men. TheNoni fruit is made by nature-God. Thanks to the Discovery Channelwhich said that “Noni is the greatest nutritional discovery of our times”.

The History of Morinda citrifolia L.

Morinda citrifolia L. is assumed to have originated from India and wasdistributed throughout the world by natural and man-made means.Ancient manuscripts, handed down from generation to generation, citeMorinda citrifolia or nonifruit as the primary ingredient in the naturalhealth preparations of ancient Indian people. Usually it is taken as adrink to enhance bodly functions and supports overall good health. Itis widely known as the “Aspirin of the Ancient”.

Noni was first discovered and used by man long before recordedhistory in Southeast Asia and the subcontinent, when ancient Indianmedical men began examining the natural world to find plants goodnot only for food, but to treat diseases and otherwise benefit theirhealth. They developed a medical system of using plants and naturaltreatments to influence their health and called it Ayurveda, which means“the science of life.”

Noni was considered a sacred plant in Ayurveda and is mentioned inancient texts as Ayushka, which in Sanskrit means “longevity.” Noniwas noted to be a balancing agent, stabilizing the body in perfecthealth. When the time came for the brave explorers of the subcontinentto leave their old world behind, they took Noni with them as an essentialelement in the establishment of their new island paradise.

Different names of Noni

In India, it is commonly known as Indian Mulberry or” Beach Mulberry”.In Sanskrit, it is called Ayushka. Story of the plant is also told amongthe people of the tropics worldwide. In Malaysia, it is called Mengkudu. In Southeast Asia, it is known as Nhau. It is called Nonu in Samoa andTonga, Nono in Raratonga and Tahiti, and Noni in the MarquesasIslands and Hawaii.

Botanical Classification

NONI the common name for fruit of the botanical plant, Morindacitrifolia, belonging to family of plants Rubiaceae is one such thatmore than suffices the requirements of a Nutritional Supplement ofgreat advantage.

Derivation of Name

Morinda... This word comes from two Latin words morus, indicus.Morus-mulberry and indicus - Indian.citrifolia... Having leaves similar to the plants under genus Citrus.

Parts used and their importance

Leaves : Morinda citrifolia has a large, simple, dark green, shiny, deeply veined and elliptical leaves. They are opposite or whorled, 3per node long or shortpetiolate; blades ovate, broadly elliptic, oblongor oblanceolate, chartaceous; foliar pellucid glands absent; domatiasparse or dense tufts of hairs or absent. Inflorescence axillary orterminal, not frondose, globose, not subtended by bracts.

Fruits : The frui ts oval in shape and grow in size up to12 cm or more and has a surface covered by polygonal-shapedsections. In the beginning, it is green and turns light yellow or whiteand somewhat gelatinous when ripe. The flowers are small, white andgrowing from a fleshy structure. They bloom and yield fruits year round.

Seeds : The seeds, triangular shaped and reddish brown, have an airsac attached at one end, which makes the seeds buoyant. This couldexplain, in part, the wide distribution of the plant throughout South Asiaand also other parts of the World.

World distribution : These trees are indigenous to South-East Asia(India,Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hawaiian Islands),south Pacific West Indies, Fiji, Vietnam and Tropical areas ofQueensland. Noni is also grown in other parts of the world but has afewer nutrients.

Optimum Growth Requisites : Clean air and pure water create theperfect environment to grow nutrient-rich noni. The plant can be seenin clearings, volcanic terrain and on limestone terranins. The plantgrows well on sandy or rocky shores. The plant also withstands droughtand grows in secondary soils. Noni is a sturdy plant and can toleratea wide range of environmental conditions. It grows in dry, wet, acidic, alkaline, and even saline soils.

Significance of Noni

All our diets lack in nutrients, our body require. NONI replaces vitalnutrients which are depleted from our foods and not replaced by othersupplements. It is observed that our body requires around 16 majornutrients and more than 150 micronutrients every day for properfunctioning.

Most diseases are caused by nutritional deficiencies. Nutritionaldeficiency also breaks down our immune system which weakens ourbody’s natural ability to fight diseases and infections. Scientists haveexpressed their shock that at present people are experiencing only50% immunity compared to early 60’s.

Proper daily intake of sufficient nutrients effectively prevents almost alldiseases. Nutritional deficiencies are caused due to the fact that thefood we eat are devitalised. Modern farming practices using chemicals, fertilisers and toxic pesticides have depleted our soil off much of itsnatural mineral components.

Nutrition deficiency also occurs due to cooking of food, intake ofsugars and fats. Noni is the only fruit that provides more than 150 ofthese much needed essential neutraceuticals in their most readilyabsorbable form to enhance our health. Thus NONI protects us fromdiseases and provides good health.

Noni is a balancing agent, stabilizing the body in maintaining perfecthealth. It is the most important medicinal plant with roots, barks, leaves, buds and fruits used to treat a wide range of maladies.

Noni’s Traditional Uses

The healing properties of Noni were tied closely to the custom oftattooing bodies. Tattooing was so painful and dangerous that manydied in the process. Those who survived, used elements of the Noniplant to assist in their recovery, and then offered Noni to the Gods insacred ceremony.

Noni is one of the India’s most important medicinal plants, with theroots, bark, leaves, buds, and fruit used to treat a wide range of healthproblems. Part of the stem was used to treat scorpion-fish puncturewounds. Children were fed Noni leaves as a treatment for vitamin-Adeficiency. Fish and other foods were wrapped in Noni leaves beforecooking in earthen ovens. Different parts of the Noni plant are used tomake a dye for fabric and also used as a famine food.

The bark contains a red pigment and the roots, a yellow pigment usedin dying kapa. A foetid oil was extracted from the syncarp and used inthe hair as an insecticide. The ripe fruit was used as a poultice. Juicefrom the fruit was also used to make a medicinal drink, aumiki awa,as a remedy for tuberculosis, and another drink, aumiki noni, used tocounter any unpleasant effects of awa. The ripe fruit reportedly wasused either raw or cooked for famine food.

Traditional uses of noni plant are varied and virtually every part of theplant is used as some form of medicine. Healers used noni leavesas a bandage or poultice for wounds. Young and green fruits werecrushed and the extracted juice was used as a remedy for lesions orsores in the mouth. Root or stem bark was typically used to treatinflammation or infections. Other conditions treated with noni includefevers, skin disease, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal upset, menstrual or urinary problems, diabetes, and venereal diseases.

Research into the traditional uses of noni indicates that it was thesecond most popular plant used in herbal remedies with approximately40 known and recorded formulations.

Apart from India the Noni plant, also grows in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. These are the areas of theworld which have the greatest knowledge of noni facts and benefits. The plant grows to a height of 5 to 7 cm, and bears potato-sized fruityear-round. The noni fruit begins its life as a white blossom, whichthen turns into a yellow, and then creamy white color. When ripe, thefruit is gel-like, resembling breadfruit. It has a pungent odor and bittertaste, which is why noni juice is often mixed with other better-tastingfruit juices when taken orally.

During World War II, U.S. soldiers were instructed in their field manualthat noni was recognized as a safe food staple to eat to sustain theirstrength. Today, millions, the world over are discovering the healthbalancing properties of this once hidden secret.

Fruit :

Pounded, unripe fruit is mixed with salt and applied to cuts and brokenbones. Parts of the fruit are used as a tonic and to contain fever inChina, Japan and Hawaii. Ripe fruit is used to draw out pus from aninfected boil (Hawaii). The fruit can be used to make shampoo(Malaysia, Hawaii) and to treat head lice (Hawaii). Juices of over ripefruits are taken to regulate menstrual flow and ease urinary problems(Malaysia).

The fruit is taken for lumbago, asthma and dysentery in Indochina.Other exotic diseases treated with the plant include diabetes andvenereal diseases.

Leaves :

Leaves are good remedy for stomach pain and after deliveryproblems.

Heated leaves applied to the chest relieve coughs, nausea and colic.Juice of the leaves is taken for arthritis.

The leaves, flowers, fruit, and bark can treat eye problems, skin woundsand abscesses, gum and throat problems, respiratory ailments, constipation and fever.

Also used to treat a variety of ailments like boils, bruises, colds, constipation, cut, diabetes, diarrhea, dysurea, ear infections, elephantiasis, enlarged spleen, eye infections, fevers, fractures, gastriculcers, gout, headaches, haemorrhoids, inf lammation, i tching, menstrual disorders, muscle aches, neuralgia, pain, pneumonia, rheumatism, ringworms, septicemia (blood poisoning), small pox, sores, sore throat, sprains, styes, tetanus, and thrush. The leaves arealso used as a tonic, emollient, deodorant, and a purgative.

Other Uses :

The bark of the Great Morinda produces a reddish purple and browndye used in making batik and the tree was widely grown for thispurpose in Java. In Hawaii, a yellowish dye was also extracted fromthe roots and also used to dye cloth.

The tree was also purposely planted to provide support for pepperwines and shade tree for coffee bushes and also as a wind-break inSurinam.

How Noni works ?To understand how Noni works in our body we should first understand a littleabout how our body works. On the physical level, our body works by chemicalreactions, all the time converting one substance to another. Even our thinking, feeling and spiritual issues all manifest in the body through chemical reactions. In our present life – pollution, stress, heavy metals, malnutrition, aging andillness interfere with the body’s chemical reaction. Noni helps chemicalreactions in our body to work better. When our chemistry works well, our body works well too.Let us now see how Noni works in our bodyNoni works at the cellular level. It helps our body’s chemical reactions towork better since Noni has a high energy level. There are many processes ofchemical reactions happening in our body. The two important ones are1. Synthesis of protein : Synthesis includes all the things that our bodymakes, for example: proteins, connective tissues, new cells, hormones, DNA,etc.2. Cellular communication : Communication refers to the flow of chemicallycontrolled information among the cells, for proper and co-ordinated growthof the human body as a whole.Globular proteins are the workhorses for both Synthesis and Communication. One class of globular protein is enzymes. Enzymes enable every chemicalreaction in the body. It is so important that if there are no enzymes, there areno chemical reactions. To control the chemical reaction which the bodymust do to make everything work effectively and smoothly, the body controlsactivity of its enzymes. Thanks to the remarkable work of Dr. Ralph Heinicke who discovered a vitalmolecule called Proxeronine in the Noni fruit. According to Dr Ralph Heinicke,Proxeronine combines with an enzyme Proxeroninase to form an alkaloidcalled Xeronine in our body.Once Xeronine is formed, it combines with many proteins in our body thatrequire Xeronine to function. There is a specific site on certain proteins thatallows them to combine with Xeronine. Many vital proteins acting ashormones, antibodies and enzymes need Xeronine to carry out their duties. Many of these proteins cannot function without Xeronine.

Key Components ofNoni and their Benefits

Proxeronine is the building block of our body to manufacture Xeronine. With nutrient-depleted foods, where these building blocks are notavailable, our proteins can become reliant on inadequate substituteslike sugar, caffeine, cocaine or nicotine to do their work. Noni breaksaddictions to these substances. By promoting optimal proteinfunctioning, Noni Juice promotes massive cellular regeneration andhormonal balance.Scopoletin : Has anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-bacterial andanti-fungal properties, lowers blood pressure, and binds to serotoninto help regulate sleep, hunger and temperature.Anthraquinone : Controls infectious bacteria Staphylococcus aureus,E. coli and Salmonella.Damnacanthal : Inhibits growth of pre-cancerous cells.Terpene : Helps with cell rejuvenation, thus increasing nutrient-toxinexchange.Phytonutrients and Selenium : Provide powerful anti-oxidantprotection against free radicals.Noni is rich in soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre cleans theblood, decreases cholesterol, binds to fats and balances blood sugarlevels. Insoluble fiber (‘bulk’) is important for colon health.Amino acids : Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins, important for most body functions. The ‘essential’ amino acids are theone which our body cannot make and we therefore must get from ourdiet. Noni contains 17 of the 22 known amino acids, including all 9essential amino acids.Rich in essential fatty acids: Fatty acids are the building blocks of fatsand oils. The ‘essential’ fatty acids in Noni, maintain healthy skin, nerve cells, heart tissue and blood vessels and help balance mood. They keep cell membranes working properly and efficiently, improvingthe nutrient-toxin exchange.

Important OverallCharacteristics of Noni

Adaptogen: An adaptogen is a substance that has a global balancingeffect on all body systems. There are only 12 known adaptogens; ofthese 12, Noni is the ‘premier’ adaptogen.

Alkaline : Tissues degrade and disease thr ives in an acidicenvironment. Noni promotes alkaline body chemistry, the optimal statefor good health.

Anti-oxidant: Anti-oxidants are important in neutralizing ‘free radicals’,or particles that cause DNA damage which can lead to cancer. Nonihas recently been found the most effective of all known source ofanti-oxidants.

Low Glycemic Index: A 3:1 ratio of carbohydrates to fibre in Nonibalances blood sugar levels.

Analgesic: Anti-inflammatory and Selective COX-2 Inhibitor-Unliketypical pain relievers and anti-inflammatory, Noni decreases pain andinflammation while protecting stomach, kidney and liver cells.

Humectants: As humectants, Noni helps tissues retain moisture.

Immuno-modulator: Noni intelligently supports the immune systemnot just by boosting it, but by regulating it to suppress the allergic andauto-immune responses.

Xeronine Mechanism

According to Dr. Ralph Heinicke“Noni contain lots of proxeronine, which is the precursor to xeronin. Moreover, Noni contains the essential enzyme that helps turn

proxeronine into xeronin once it enters our body. Various studiessuggest that xeronin is so important because it can retain the propertiesand shapes of the specific proteins, the body needs for its processes.According to research, this means that it can continually repair cellsif they have become damaged through illness or trauma of some form.

Xeronine activates dormant enzymes, in our small intestines and thisis very important, since we eat too many foods that are lacking insufficient quantities of enzymes. Our bodies need specific enyzymesto enjoy effective digestion, calm nerves and to increase our physicaland emotional energy.

Xeronine protects and keeps the shape and suppleness of proteinmolecules so that they may be able to pass through the cell walls andbe used to form healthy tissue. Without these nutrients going into thecell, the cell cannot perform its job efficiently. Without pro-xeronine toproduce xeronine, our cells suffer and then our complete body suffers.

The alkaloid which the body produces from the pro-xeronine in theNoni plant, also assists in enlarging the membrane pores of the cells. This enlargement allows for larger chains of peptides (amino acids orproteins) to be admitted into the cell and to feed us better. If thesechains are not used, they become waste and this precious source ofenergy is lost by going to fat or being eliminated.

Every cell in the body is like a house with doors and windows. Whenyou have to drive a car into a garage, you need to open the large door. The same goes on in our body if we have to absorb a larger proteinmolecule, we need to open a larger pore if we are to use it. Xeronine, made from pro-xeronine, assists in enlarging pores and allowing betterabsorption of nutrients.

NONI –A Health Enhancer

NONI works as a Cell-Rejuvenator !

Our body is made up of micro-units called cells. Healthy cells leadto healthy tissues; healthy tissues lead to healthy organs; healthy organslead to healthy systems; and healthy systems lead to healthy body.Hence, the health of cells is essential for a body to be healthy. NONI,being the best nutritional supplement works at this root-level to makethese fundamental units healthy and thereby make us live healthier.

NONI Works as a ‘De-toxifier’

Our cells are made up of micro-particles like neutrons, protons, cytoplasm, Golgi bodies etc. which are genetically engineered to workwell in a chemicals-free environment.

Since we live in a chemically polluted environment, many types oftoxins and pollutants are going into our body. They, wrapping the cellsday by day, have formed multiple layers around the cell walls, leadingto closure or shrinkage of the ‘pores’ of cell walls. Consequently, theinter-cellular communication is prevented, the cells damaged andthey forget their purposes. They neither do their regular functionscorrectly nor efficiently.

NONI, being the powerful De-toxifier, removes the toxic layers on thecell walls and it enlarges the pores of cell walls. This enlargementallows for larger chains of peptides (amino acids or proteins) to beadmitted into the cell and to feed us better. If these chains are notused they become waste and this precious source of energy is lost bygoing to fat or being eliminated.

Because of NONI’s detoxification process, the cells resume theircommunications; are reminded of their purposes and are rejuvenatedwith greater strength and life. Now the cells are able to assimilate thenutrients and medicines easily. They are strengthened and healed attheir roots. This is the basis of NONI’s cellular activity that causes theenhancement of efficacy of the medicine.

NONI Works as a Protein Regulator and Activator !

As we know that Morinda citrifolia fruit is a rich resource of largemolecules called ‘Proxeronine’ (Pro-zair-o-neen). It combines withenzymes in the body to form an essential substance known as Xeronine(zair-o-neen). Once Xeronine is formed, it combines with many proteinsin the body that requires Xeronine to function. Not all proteins, butmany vital proteins acting as hormones, antibodies, and enzymes needXeronine to carry out their duties.

What do proteins do and why are they important ?

Proteins give structure to hair, skin and bones. They allow the transportof chemicals and nutrients through cell membrane. Proteins also actas hormones, coordinating all bodily processes at the molecular level.Proteins act as antibodies and incapacitate foreign bodily invaders likeviruses. They also act as enzymes and facilitate all chemical productionin the body. Many of these proteins cannot function without Xeronine.

Why is a Proxeronine Rich Supplement important in our diet?

Illness, a highly active or stressful lifestyle and ageing, put increaseddemand on proteins. To meet these demands and keep the bodyhealthy, we need to increase the supply of Proxeronine by drinkingNoni regularly. This helps overcome low levels of Xeronine in our bodyand restore healthy protein assimilation.

15 16

Noni and Nitric oxideThe basic concept that everybody needs to remember about Nitricoxide (NO) is that it is essential to body functions and needs to beproduced by the body on a continuous basis. When Nitric oxide is notproduced in the amounts needed, malfunction of body systems anddisease is a guaranteed result. Finding solutions that will help thebody return to its proper production of Nitric oxide is a powerful keyto unlock the secret of good health. Noni is the solution.

In 1998, three researches won the Nobel Prize in Medicine fordiscovering that Nitric oxide as a signaling molecule involved incontrolling the circulation of blood, regulating activities of brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach and other organs. It acts in our tissues toregulate a seemingly limitless range of functions in the body.

The Nitric oxide

Approach to Health

Here is a partial list of what Nitric oxide (NO) does in our body

BLOOD PRESSURE : lowers blood pressure, improves blood flowand blood vessel diameter and prevents formation of blood clots.

HEART : widens blood vessels, increases oxygen supply andprotects the heart from damage and cell death.

BRAIN : transmits message between nerve cells and is associatedwith the process of learning, memory and sleep. It stimulatemental clarity and ability to concentrate.

IMMUNE SYSTEM : supports the immune system’s ability to combatinfection and disease.

CANCER : reduces tumor growth and increases the immuneresponse against the radical replication of cancerous cells.

STRESS: counteracts the effects of the neither stress hormone norepinephrine, to increase the relaxation response.

INFLAMMATION: Helps relieve pain, and it ’s a mediator ininflammation and rheumatism.

SKELETAL MUSCLES : widens the blood channels leading toskeletal muscles. For those who work out, this means faster gainsin lean muscle mass, greater strength, increased endurance andfull-body muscle recovery.

SEX : creating increased NO is the expected effect of the celebrateddrug Viagra, which stimulates, restores and magnifies the naturalresponses of male and female genitals. The proper amount of NOheightens and lengthens the time of stimulation.

Strength, Endurance & Hemodilation

Nitric Oxide is the key molecule used by our body to transport oxygen, increases blood flow and deliver nutrients to skeletal muscle. Thisprocess in called “hemodilation. By increasing nitric oxide production,Noni increases our maximum contractile velocity-in all muscle types. The results are immediate and consequential, and include increasingour load capacity, boosting our power output, and quickening ourmuscle contraction. When hemodilation is accelerated, and best of allsustained and you’ll start to see some amazing things happen to yourbody. The positive changes begin in a little as one week... and by theone month march you could be seeing muscle fullness and hardnesslike never before from a drug-free compound. Also, look for increasedstrength and markedly improved stamina.

Morinda citrifolia researchers noted a direct correlation between thereported benefits of nitric oxide and those of Morinda citrifolia andthen made the breakthrough discovery that all tested forms of Morindacitrifolia produced a nitric oxide effect which brought Noni from folkloreto science.

17 18

Noni takes the effectiveness of Nitric Oxide to a whole new level!Based upon ground breaking research that helped unlock the secretMorinda citrifolia the Noni has been formulated to deliver more of whatmakes Morinda citrifolia work.

Cellular Communication with Noni

There is a constant war between our natural cell defense mechanismand our enemies like bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins.

In a battle, if the army chief cannot communicate with his soldiers, thewar is lost. Likewise cells need to communicate with one another toattack and defend themselves.

It is more interesting to read from the 24th edition of Harpers bio-chemistry, which tells us that about 200 carbohydrates are found in thenature of which scientists have identified eight as carbohydratecompound of letters that make up to cellular alphabet.

The cell communication is accomplished by using these eight knowncarbohydrates to shape bio-chemical letters and words.

The cells attach these eight known carbo-hydrates, to fats and proteinsthereby creating what is known as glycoforms. Glycoforms representthe cell’s urgent messages for defense and help !

If the cells cannot transmit their messages, they can be suddenlyconquered by their enemies.

When cells can easily communicate, prevention and healing takeplace.

Carbohydrate based therapeutics is the nutrition necessary for cell-to-cell communication and to increase cellular activity. NONI which isr ich in more than 150 nutraceut icals, boosts up cel l - to-cel lcommunication.

Noni and Body Systems

Systems Benefited :

Studies suggest that Noni benefits the whole body systems:

Immune system : Noni cures cancer cells to their normal state. Itstimulates macrophages and increases white blood cells therebysupporting the immune system’s natural ability to fight disease andinfection and build immunity power.

Circulatory system : Noni lowers the blood pressure, acting as avasodilator. For tissues and cells, Noni is a superior antioxidant thathelps rid the body of harmful free radicals and helps in the treatmentof various ailments.

Digestive system : Noni fruit and leaf juice support proper digestionand work at the gut level. It contains enzymes and helps the liver getrid of toxins. The juice helps the body to absorb more nutrients at thecellular level.

Metabolic system : Noni boosts the metabolic system, resulting infeelings of increased energy and vitality making the person morerejuvenating and stress releasing.

Skin and Hair : Noni seed is rich in linoleic acid, an essential fattyacid that aids in skin health and hydration. Noni contains componentsthat are specifically important for the skin and hair. It also helps carrybeneficial substances to the skin.

Claims are made that Morinda citrifolia improves the immune system, ultimately healing dozens of conditions ranging from addictions tovaricose veins and yeast rash.

Scientific research on NoniNoni’s healing properties are widely recorded in the Ayurveda andSiddha medicinal texts of India. NONI is now researched in more than42 universities in 10 countries and it has earned more than 500research articles.

Preliminary Medical research

Over the years since 1994, Noni has increasingly stimulated the interestof medical science, with 114 papers published since then and 36 justin 2006-7 alone. Despite the large market for juice products andresearch developments, the nutrient and phytochemical profiles ofNoni have not been extensively studied.

Furthermore, numerous health claims made on Noni juice are graduallysupported by scientific research and in human clinical trials. One cancerstudy under NIH peer-review in 2006 was conducted, the results of whichremain unpublished as of August, 2007.

Likewise, in a University-based clinical trial, it was shown that Nonijuice consumption lowered blood cholesterol levels. The results ofthis study have not been published under peer-review.

Laboratory studies have investigated noni’s effect on growth ofcancerous tissues in mice. One such study in vitro found that nonireduced growth of capillary vessels sprouting from human breast tumorexplants and at increased concentrations, caused existing vessels todegenerate. It remains unknown whether such effects occur in vivo inother animal models or in cancer patients.

Another study showed noni juice to inhibit formation of cancer cells inrats (using detection methods of biochemical markers called DNAadducts). It further showed a reduced number of DNA adducts in ratsinduced with a carcinogen. The same study showed effectiveantioxidant properties of noni juice compared with those of vitamin C,grape seed powder and pycnogenol. The results indicated reducedcarcinogen-DNA adduct formation in this laboratory model andantioxidant activity that may be relevant to anti-cancer mechanisms.

1. Anti tumor activity :

There are many compounds in Noni which have the anti-tumoractivity.

Noni’s effect on cancer deals with the fact that Noni enhances thecellular structure while cancer destroys it. One of the Noni’s keycomponents, Proxeronine is send to “sick” cells within the body bythe golgi apparatus and reticuloendothelum. These sick cellsattract Proxeronine and an enzyme Proxeronease. The interactionforms a compound Xeronine which is a cellular enhancer.

Noni fights the tumors by activation of immune system. Byenhancing the response of T cells and / or macrophages, we seeincreased immune activity. Other studies show that mixing Noniwith chemoimmuno-therapy drugs produce an increase in lifespan.Several other studies are performed in laboratories to validateNoni’s cancer fighting abilities. In one such study, rat cells (cellsthat are precursors to many malignant growths) were injected witha substance called Damnacanthal in Noni. Damnacanthal inducesnormal morphology and cytoskeletal structure to cancerous andprecancerous cells. They observed that the injection significantlyinhibited rat cells from reproducing.

2. Analgesic effect :

Cure for pains, painful inflammation and swellings are the mostcommon usage of Morinda species. The chronic pain and painfulinflammations are often associated with arthritis.

Previously scientists believed that all COX enzymes within thebody were same. Recently it was discovered that there are actuallytwo COX enzymes: COX-1 and COX-2. At the time of inflammationand pain COX-2 enzymes produce prostaglandins which are themain causes for pain and inflammation. In contrast, COX-1 enzymesare responsible for protecting the body’s stomach lining andkidneys. They continually produce protective prostaglandins.

Page 13: A new age fruit book - A... · 2019-10-09 · Noni is one of the India’s most important medicinal plants, with the roots, bark, leaves, buds, and fruit used to treat a wide range

21 22

This natural Noni Juice selectively inhibit the COX 2 enzyme whileallowing the COX 1 enzyme to continue functioning. The selectivelyeating COX 2 inhibitor could help with menstrual pain and preventcancers of the colon. Even those who are diagnosed withAlzheimer’s disease may benefit from a selective COX 2 inhibitor.

Preclinical safety studies show that long term use of Noni juice isnot a problem, unlike the problematic traditional long term use ofAspirin and NSAID’s like ibuprofen which may cause side effectslike rashes, unusual bleeding and stomach pain.

3. Infections :

Infections are the most common diseases where applications ofMorinda species are effective. The extract from the leaves ofMorinda citrifolia (not the fruit that renders noni juice) displayed amoderate suppression of Ascaris lumbricoides ( intest inalnematodes) growth in the test tube. Morinda citrifolia juice has notshown to manage infections once symptoms have manifested, although there are anecdotal reports of patients feeling better frommild infections after using noni. Decoctions of leaves or roots ofrelated mulberry species may have some suppressive effect onparasitic infections.

4. Diabetes :

In the past, Morinda citrifolia fruit has been a part of the treatmentfor diabetes. Most of the folk uses for diabetes involve chewing theMorinda citrifolia leaves or a combination of the plant and leaves.Chewing mulberry leaves releases and activates large amounts ofmucilage or insoluble dietary fibre.

The fibre may slow the absorption of simple sugars from the gut.The effect in most patients would be a slight reduction in the peakglucose level following a meal. In a survey of Noni users by Dr. NeilSolomon it was found that about 83% of those taking Noni to relievesymptoms associated with diabetes experienced significant relief.

One of Noni’s effects is on the pancreas and the immune system.Doctors and researchers suggest that Noni has the ability to

strengthen the immune system which in turn can help the bodymaintain strong insulin levels. Noni fortifies and maintains cellstructure. This can be accomplished by Noni acting as anadaptagen that aids sick cells in repairing themselves. This couldapply to Diabetes by either helping malfunctioning Beta cells inthe pancreas or by aiding the cells which are unsuccessfully tryingto receive and use the glucose in the blood.

5. As nutritive booster :

Presence of ProXeronine in noni initiates a rise of xeronine in theintestinal tract which enables the walls of intestines to moreefficiently absorb various nutrients specially amino acids. Vitaminsact synergistically with xeronine to nourish all body systems.

6. Psychological Effect :

One of the constituents, scopoletin, shows special promise.Scopoletin and other unidentified constituents in noni bind toserotonin. This means that it can influence sleep, body temperature, hunger, mood and sexual behavior. This constituent lowers bloodpressure, acting as a vasodilator. Scopoletin has been anti-inflammatoryand histamine-inhibiting quality.

Serotonin is a hormone that acts as a neuro-transmitter. Thesedetermine mood of person. This is also a precursor to a hormonecalled melatonin which plays multiple life saving roles in body, including regulating biological rhythms. Serotonin is more than amessenger and at its level in our body affects a wide range ofmental and physical responses in the body and plays a significantrole in activities like temperature regulation, longer sensations, sexual behaviour and sleep patterns.

Low serotonin levels in the brain are linked to clinical depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, schizophrenia, sleep problems, migraine head aches, autism, alzheimers disease, drug and alcohol addictions and patterns of violent behaviour. Theabove listed conditions will improve significantly when serotoninlevels are raised.

Page 14: A new age fruit book - A... · 2019-10-09 · Noni is one of the India’s most important medicinal plants, with the roots, bark, leaves, buds, and fruit used to treat a wide range

23 24

In a recent study using PHT scans (technology that measures cellfunction to gauge the rate of serotonin synthesis), it was found thatmen in the study produced 52% more serotonin than women.Women are twice as likely as men to become clinically depressed.

In the survey conducted on 111 people who consumed noni forhelp with depression, 77% reported decrease in symptoms afterdrinking noni.

7. Miscellaneous :

The alkaloids xeronine and proxeronine in noni can supplementthe activity or replace our own xeronine. It activates inactiveproteins, regulates the rigidity and shape of already active proteins. Some of the physiological responses reported from xeronine includelowering blood pressure, stopping menstrual cramping, relief fromarthritis, suppression of gastric ulcers, promotion of injury mending, prevent ing depression, s lowing seni l i ty and reducingatherosclerosis. One of the constituents, scopoletin, shows special promise. Otherunidentified consituents in noni bind to serotonin. This means thatit can influence sleep, body temperature, hunger, mood and sexualbehavior.Scopoletin lowers blood pressure without any side affects, acting asa vasodilator. It has anti-inflammatory and histamine inhibiting quality.Scopoletin was isolated from noni in 1993 by researchers at theUniversity of Hawaii.Noni works on the inflammation which is the core of many diseaseslike Arthritis. The alkaloid compound (plant sterols) and plantmetabolites of noni by their anti-inflamatory activity can reducepain at various joints in arthritis (Dr. Solomon’s Research)The anti oxidant effect of noni is due to presence of Seleniumwhich is one of the best antioxidants. It may decrease free radicaldamage in joint cells and prevent many degenerative diseasescaused by the deposition of free radicals in the body.Xeronine acts as a perfect antidote against alkaloid poisoning andaddiction to alcohol.

Recent advances inNoni research

Isolation, Quantification and identification of the structure of Proxeronineand Xeronine in Noni are in progress. Other advances and follow-upwork on noni and it’s effect on Lewis lung carcinoma cells, humanclinical trial involving Noni on the “Chemopreventive effect of Noni inhuman smokers” and effect of Noni and chemotherapy drugs on thesarcoma 180 line of cancer cells.

Individuals have uncovered noni’s ability to inhibit the COX-II enzymewhile allowing the COX-I enzyme to continue to function.

Investigations on the antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasisticproperties of Noni are in progress.

Analysis of Noni is done for estrogenic properties.

Fractionation and Isolation of the biologically active components ofNoni Juice are done.

Biological activities of Noni

Antibacterial activity

Acubin, L-asperuloside, and alizarin in Noni fruit, as well as otheranthraquinone compounds in Noni roots, are all proven antibacterialagents. These compounds fight against infectious bacterial strainslike Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus morgaii, Staphylococcus aureus,Baciillius subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Shigela.

These antibacterial elements within Noni are responsible for thetreatment of skin infections, colds, fevers and other bacterial-causedhealth problems Recently, Duncan demonstrated that scopoletin, ahealth promotor in Noni, inhibits the activity of E. coli, commonlyassociated with recent outbreaks resulting in hundreds of seriousinfections and even death. Noni also manage stomach ulcer throughinhibition of bacteria H pylori.

Antiviral activity

Umezawa et al. found a compound isolated from Noni roots named 1-methoxy- 2-formyl-3-hydroxyanthraquinone suppressed the cytopathic effectof HIV infected MT-4 cells without inhibiting cell growth.

Anthelmintic activity

An ethanol extract of the tender Noni leaves induced paralysis anddeath of human parasitic nematode worm, Ascaris lumbricoides, withina day. Noni is used as an effective insecticide.

Analgesic activity

Joseph Betz reported that Noni fruits possess analgesic and tranquilizingactivites. A French Research Team led by Younos, tested the analgesicand sedative effects of extracts from Morinda citrifolia plant. The extractshowed a significant, dose-related, central analgesic activity in thetreated mice. They stated that “these findings validate the traditionalanalgesic properties of this plant.”

The analgesic efficacy of the Noni extract is 75 % as strong asmorphine, yet non-addictive and side effect free. In cooperationbetween College of Medicine University of Illinois and Henan MedicalUniversity, Wang and Fu examined the analgesic properties of noni inanimal models. NONI was tested for its analgesic properties by the“twisted method” animal model.

Hypotensive activity

Dang Van Ho of Vietnam demonstrated that a total extract of Noni rootshas a hypotensive effect. Moorthy et al found that an ethanol extractof Noni roots lowered the blood pressure in an anesthetized dog.Youngken’s research team determined that a hot water extract of Noniroots lowered the blood pressure of an anesthetized dog. A Hawaiianphysician reported that Noni fruit juice had a diuretic effect.

Immunological activity

Asahina found that an alcohol extract of Noni fruit at variousconcentrations inhibited production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-a), an endogenous tumor promotor. Therefore, the alcohol extractmay inhibit the tumor promoting effect of TNF-a. Hirazumi found thatnoni contained a polysaccharide-rich substance that inhibited tumorgrowth. It did not exert significant cytotoxic effects in adapted culturesof lung cancer cells, but could activate peritoneal exudate cells toimpart profound toxicity when co-cultured with tumor cells.

Mental health and improved high frequency

A small human clinical trial on the effect of NONI on auditory functionand quality of life in the patients with decreased bone mineral densityand auditory function was conducted by UIC College of Medicine,Rockford, IL. This study showed that NONI provided a positive benefiton mental health and improved high frequency hearing. The datasuggested that increased amounts or extended duration of NONI intakewas required to affect this disorder.

How Noni canrevolutionize the health

care management ?

1. Noni provides most of the nutrients required for the cells to becomehealthy. It helps proper function of protein like hormones, antibodies andenzymes to coordinate all chemical processes in patient’s body for properbodily functions.

2. Noni by increasing the count of neutrophils in the blood not only booststhe immune system of the patient, but also regulates it by suppressingthe allergy and auto- immune response during treatment.

3. Noni helps patients who are depressed, especially during the days ofsickness. It increases the secretion of serotonin – a hormone that actsas a neurotransmitter. It is often called mood molecules, as it determinesthe mood of a person. Noni secretes right amount of serotonin in thebody of patient.

4. By the biological action of the components present, Noni strengthensthe self-healing mechanism and cell repairing ability of the body. Whenthe body’s Self healing Mechanism is strong and in place, the medicinethey intake works more effectively.

5. Noni by its cellular action keeps healthy cell to stay healthy and sickcells to become healthy. Noni detoxifies the toxic residues on the cellmembrane and opens the cell membrane pores. This allows betterabsorption of medicine by the cells of the patient’s body, which in turnensure effectiveness of treatment and efficacy of medicine.

Morinda citrifolia juice is a healthy drink to consume as part of an overallbalanced diet. Noni juice energizes and rejuvenates the body and hencehelps us to lead a healthy life now and forever.

Noni and body energy flowScience showed us that physical matter is really made up of energy thatbehaves as though it is solid. The human body even though it looks like solidis also made up of energy, In fact, many different kinds of energies. There isa two-way system connecting our chemistry and our energies.

Herbs, fruits and medicines have an energetic influence along with a chemicalinfluence. The energy that passes into our body, directly influences thechemical reactions. Noni has a very high energetic quality.

Noni contains healing energies that strengthen the life force - ‘Chi’ -‘Prana’ inour body. When this life force becomes stronger, our defenses improve andsymptoms clear. We naturally feel better about ourselves and life seemsworth living even more. This effect on our vital force has a lot to do with whythe Noni fruit has helped so many different health conditions.

Every one of our physical and non-physical components has a purpose. Forexample, the purpose of our red blood cells is to carry oxygen. Cellscontinually look to their energy patterns for information about their purposes. They need these reminders because they are faced with so many challengeseveryday. These challenges include environmental toxins, food additives, undigested foods, bacteria and viruses, and the effects of negative thoughtsand emotions like worry, anger, impatience and stress. These challengescan make our cells forget what their purposes are.

These challenges also affect us negatively when they change the vibrationsof our energy flows. Vibrations represent the speed at which energy flowmoves through the body. When our energy flows stop vibrating the way theyshould, some of them slow down and some speed up. As a result, they becomeout of balance with each other. This causes their pattern to change. Becausethe pattern is now different, it feeds different and incorrect information to thecells. The cells will no longer fulfill their purpose as correctly or efficiently asbefore. Consequently, cells begin to experience the effects of diseases.

Noni’s healing energies remind our cells of their purpose by correcting theirenergy flows. Thus Noni improves the health of our cells by reminding themof their purpose. It is found that Noni’s healing energies are similar to thebody’s energy flows.
