A FIRST FOR THE COLOR GUARDAt the Links Competion at Lincoln on October 10 the Color Guard recieved the Caption Award, which is a first place award. It felt really good, because Gretna has never won before," said Taylor Rieken, senior. All of our hard work paid off."

Spinning their patched flags, Maddie Owen (16) and Elyse Barna (16), excecuted their routine during the halftime show of the football game. I like performing and being with people that feel like family," said Barna.

Students went the extra mile with their dedication to music to participate in honor bands with other dedicated students across the state. A total of 22 students participated in extracurricular bands which included the All-State Band, All-State Orchestra, All-State Jazz Band, Doane Honor Band, UNL Winter Winds, Hastings Honor Band, UNO Honor Band, and the Wesleyan Honor Band. Participating in these bands helped band members build their skills. I like playing with musicians that take it as seriously as I do, said Chloe Geise, sophomore. We get to play amazing music and work with college level players. You also get to bond with the people you come with and meet new people. To be in an honor band, students had to submit a recording of themselves playing scales, excerpts, and students through video auditions. Being in an honor band requires you to be a dedicated and disciplined player, said Nicole Martindale,

sophomore. You must always practice to make your audition the best it can be. Students challenged themselves to work hard practicing their instruments to have the opportunity to be in an honor band, and to have the pride of being in a band with musicians who hold the same capability as they do. I wanted to take part in honor bands because I get to meet the best musicians in the state of Nebraska, said Kaitlin Jensen, senior. By taking part in honor band it takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you a better player in the long run. The honor band students devoted themselves to the bands knowing that they had the opportunity to play with the best musicians around Nebraska. I want to be in honor bands because it challenges me as an individual, said Trey Switzer, junior. Not only are the parts hard for the music, but it allows you to get better. I want to become the best musician I can be. Honor bands also look very

good on records for college, you also meet new people and have new experiences. The musicians had a goal to be in the bands to challenge themselves to be the best musicians that they could be by practicing hard to be able to perform. I enjoy challenging myself all the time, and I want to be the best musician that I can, so I challenge myself to make honor bands and perform in them, said Jacob Mann, sophomore. Students enjoyed participating in the bands to better their skills with their instruments. I believe honor bands are a great experience, said Kayla Martin, freshman. They teach me many different things, push me musically, and they are really fun. I get to meet new people from all over the state who enjoy music as much as I do. It's just an experience you'll never forget.-Megan Monismith
