MESSAGE

(Continued on page 12)

What you are holding in yourhand right now is a “Transitional”Version of the Knights of St. JohnJournal. A bit of the old and thenew. As you all may have heard thispast July, our multi-talented Asst.Editor, Jim Schafhausen, announcedhis planned retirement from hisJournal duties. He has given of histime, serving us faithfully and un-selfishly since his appointment tothe position by then Supreme Presi-dent Frank Waseleski at the 2006Supreme Convention in Buffalo,New York. In addition to those du-ties, he served as Cincinnati GrandPresident and currently as 1st VicePresident of the Supreme Subordi-nate Commandery-USA. He has re-tired and with his devoted wife,Connie, (our Proof-Reader)will betraveling to see their family andthese United States in their homeon wheels. We wish him well …..and you will hear more about ourman in a future journal.

Enter the new. Jim’s were bigshoes to fill but we believe we havefound our man. He is Michael Days,2nd Vice President of Blessed Sacra-ment of the Divine Shepherd Com-mandery #676 in Trenton, NJ. Heis the Editor of the award-winningPhiladelphia Daily News. He is anacclaimed writer and has receivedmore honors for his work in Jour-nalism than this space can allow.Again, I will see that you hear moreabout this multi-faceted man soon.

These two devoted Knights haveworked together to get this issue offthe ground and to the presses. Theywill continue to do so until MikeDays receives his mantle of sole re-sponsibility.

Meanwhile, this office have beenbusy too. Naturally, I had to getsick and be out of operation for twoweeks with a virus-caused cough andcold. The mother of all coughingspells. In spite of that, and with

May the grace and peace of OurLord Jesus Christ be with you!

There is a saying: “Time flies

when you are having fun.” or “Timewaits for no one.” I am sure thereare other similar sayings. However,my brothers and sisters, time is fly-ing by us quicker and quicker. Justtwo months ago we concluded thebeautiful season of Christmas. Thenthere was a quick turn around. Itwas the start of the Ordinary Timein the Church’s liturgical.

When we entered into the Ordi-nary Time in the Church’s liturgi-cal calendar, we were encouraged to“roll up our sleeves” and put ourfaith into action. We were encour-aged to profess our faith in JesusChrist in what we say and do. Asa lways , I am gratefu l too ourKnights and Ladies for your faithand charitable works of mercy andkindness. You continue to put yourfaith into action.

Now we enter into another won-derful spiritual season of grace.Lent and Easter is the time todeepen our faith and commitmentin Jesus Christ and to proclaim himon Easter Sunday, and there after.

May we not get caught up in thiscrazy, material istic and fragileworld, but instead, keep “rolling upyour sleeves” for Jesus Christ. Pro-claim him in your speech and ac-tions. Be his solders of peace, jus-tice, and hope to all around you.

As always, you are rememberedin my daily prayers and especiallyduring the season of Lent and Eas-ter.

God bless you,

Peace and blessings,

Msgr. Federico S. BrittoSupreme Spiritual Director

My dear fellow Knights and La-dies of the Knights of St. John In-ternational, Greetings from theSupreme President.

I am in hopes that you and yourfamilies had the opportunity to en-joy the festive season and were ableto assist those that are less fortu-nate than we are. As we move for-ward in another new year, we havemuch work ahead of us.

By now you should be preparingfor your upcoming conventions aswe are also preparing for our Su-preme Executive Board of DirectorsMeeting. Strong leadership and atotal participation of all your del-egates will accomplish our goals.

If we respect the rights of othersand all are permitted to state theirpositions, there is no end to whatwe can achieve for the good of ourorder. Throughout the years, nomatter what office or position I haveserved within, I have continuallystated that by following the laws ofour constitution and respectingthem as written, you will never gowrong.

Recently, I have noticed an in-crease, a small percentage com-pared to our total membership, indisputes within our organization. This is not uncommon in an orderof our size, and especially if you ren-der in the fact that we are an Inter-national organization, but any in-crease is too much.

We should be torch bearers forour faith, family, and communitieswe live within, and be conductingourselves as good Catholic gentle-men. During our meetings, I urgethat we take time from our agendasto discuss the respect of one another, respect for the Church, family unity, and the laws of our Constitution.Sometimes, stepping back and re-viewing what we have, and are do-ing, can help us understand whatwe need to change going forward.
