1 March General Meeting Tuesday March 5, 2013 @7:30 pm Mill Creek Christian Church 1660 S Street 93301 Refreshments: Debbi & Rosemary President’s Message JoAnne Rowles Condolences go out to Bonnie Bartell whose husband Bill passed away in January. Bill was a horseman and bred race horses. With Bonnie they made Wishing Well Ranch sanctuary for unwanted horses, dogs, cats and other animals. I attended many classes with Bonnie and Bill. They were quite the competitors in the “fastest downing dog” and “fastest sitting dog” contests. Bill also attended Animal Control Commission meeting. He will be missed by family and friends. I received a card from Phyllis Selby- Dabbs. She says she has moved to Riverside to live near her daughter. Her Scottie is with the breeder and just has a litter. We will miss Phyllis and her Scotties. Sun, Fun, Stay, Play Match This AKC Sanctioned Obedience and Rally C Match will be held March 29 th prior to the KC Kennel Club Trials. BOTC will set up two rings using club practigates. These will be left up for the trials. This will be an excellent opportunity for club members and others to practice on the grounds where they will be competing. Match flyers were sent out by email and will be included with newsletters for those without email. There is a price break for pre-entries. l Hot Dog Mock Trial This is our first event of the year and is designed to get us “jump started” for the upcoming competitive year. We arrived at the park with a heavy cloud cover and chilly conditions. As I started the coals, club members set up the obedience and rally rings. I had lots of company standing next to the hot coals. What I didn’t know was I got too close and melted my track suit in several places. We sat down for the usual fare of hot dogs and all the side dishes. We missed Olympia’s spectacular desserts and Sherri Yarian’s cookies. And then it was off to practice. We had lots of good run thru’s and several people tried rally for the 1 st time. Thanks to everyone who came out and helped. Remember T.E.A.M. - Together we all achieve more. Doing events such as this and club practices really help when you trial. I found out what Sky will do when another dog moves and approaches him in the long sit – NOTHING. I was very proud of him. . I love this picture and couldn’t resist including it, even if Valentine’s Day is over. Tails Waggin’ A Newsletter for BOTC Members and Friends February 2013

Calendar of Events

Mar 5 General Meeting 7:30pm Mar 29 Sun, Fun, Stay, Play – Obed & Rally C Match – KC Fairgrounds

A dog’s target learning age is 8 – 16 weeks. This is the best time to teach the basics, and teaching at this time will give your dog a good learning pattern for life. He becomes capable of problem-solving, and is interested in learning. If your dog didn’t get trained at the target age, he can still learn at any age, it will just take him a little longer.

Mar 30 & 31 KC Kennel Club Show - KC Fairgrounds

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be your faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

More Training Please!

Most responsible dog owners will give their new puppy or dog the basic lessons of obedience and socialization. They will also teach a few tricks for the fun of it. After that, we’re often finished with the training part of a dog’s life. He has learned what he needs to know.

That may be true, but if you want to have a smarter, happier dog, keep the training going throughout life. To your dog, training combines three of the greatest pleasures in his life – spending time with you, pleasing you, and being rewarded with a little treat. Depending on what you’re teaching him to do, the training may also include some of his other favorite things, like running, chasing or jumping.

4

Your dog doesn’t have to be a genius to learn lots of tricks. A dog of average intelligence can understand about 165 words. The more you teach your dog, the more he learns how to learn. He also

doesn’t have to be a pup. The adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is more of a self-fulfilling prophesy than a truth. A dog of any age, who is physically able and mentally alert has the ability to learn something new.

It doesn’t matter so much what you teach your dog. What matters is that you are spending the time with him, stimulating his mind, and giving him a sense of purpose. You can teach all kinds of whacky tricks for your amusement – he doesn’t mind. He thrives on the pleasure you get from his performance (and the treat that follows!).

But you can also teach practical tasks – things that help you around the house. Most dogs would actually rather be doing jobs for you than lay around doing nothing. Dog trainer, Melissa Heeter, gives her dogs little jobs at home, such as helping to bring in the groceries. She finds items in her bag that her dogs can carry without damaging, and lets them bring them inside. They also bring in the newspaper for her.

There are all kinds of jobs you can teach your dog – bring me the remote, find my car keys, go get mom, put your toys away, put this in the trash. It may sound funny to have a dog do these things, but service dogs do tasks like this everyday for their disabled owners. They are perfectly capable, and they enjoy helping out.

Most dog breeds were bred for work. It gives them pleasure and a sense of purpose to have jobs to do. Dogs who misbehave or become destructive often do

so out of frustration because they have an innate need to be doing something, and haven’t been given something to do.

Just look at a dog’s face and body language after he’s jumped through a hoop, retrieved a ball or rolled over – he’s happy and eager to do it again and again. His mind is being stimulated. That kind of joy can happen with every new trick, every time he performs it.

Get out there and train something new!

Caught on Camera at Hot Dog Mock Trial

Doggie Mardi Gras was held Sunday February

17th at Windsor Park. The theme was “Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler” or Let

the good times roll – PAWTY. This year was no exception.

There was no problem with the weather. It was

spectacular. There were several prospective new members we hope to see at an upcoming meeting.

6

We started with the rings relay and the Cajun K-9 Control relay. As usual the events were hotly

contested. There were trips over the rings and much water spilled through the weaves. Then it was on to Bourbon St. Bowling. It never ceases to amaze how many dogs do

anything to avoid knocking down the pins. There was only 1 “gutter

dog” . Last time out Sky came

close, knocking down just one pin. This year he approached the lanes

leaping and spinning. Like so many others when he got near the pins he avoided them like the plague. How low can you go? Louisiana Limbo was the next event. Sometimes you have

to get down on the ground to convince your dog they can go under the bar. The last event was the high jump. It was a very competitive event with both large and small

dogs vying for the final spot. The weather gods once again smiled down on BOTC and it was a great day to be in the park with our dogs

and friends. What could be better? Dessert!!! Eddy brought the “King”

cupcakes. Staci found the baby Jesus and will bring the next cake.

A BOTC Tradition – the group photo.

Practice your limbo, bowling, jumping etc and we’ll see you all in 2015.

Some dogs came ready to pawty.
