The event proceeds support The Foundation’s four adult free vision clinics in greater Cincinnati that serve 2,000 patients annually. Proceeds also support the training of tomorrow’s eye care professionals, including support of the Ophthalmology Resident Program at the UC College of Medicine, and an innovative research fund seeking new cures and treatments for eye disease.

“The Codys have made a positive impact on our community through their professional and volunteer leadership. Their impact will be felt for generations,” said Dan Geeding, The Foundation chairman. “By graciously lending their name to the event, they are continuing their legacy of leadership.”

Mary Ellen Cody has been honored as an Enquirer Woman of the Year in 2006, and Tom, the current chairman of Children’s Hospital Medical Center, was honored as Great Living Cincinnatian in 2012.

Tom explained the importance of The Foundation’s work by say-ing, “So many eye diseases are like ticking time bombs, and they are going to continue to progress until they’re discovered and taken care of. Many folks who come into The CEI Foundation’s clinics are in that situation. The fuse has been lighted, and absent the ability to come to the clinic and be taken care of, will suffer an irretrievable loss of sight.”

More than 21,000 lives have been touched by The CEI Foundation’s outreach and clinic programs since 2008.

2016 was a year of expansion for The CEI Foundation’s free vision clinics. In June, The Foundation added a third vision clinic in Price Hill at the Good Samaritan Free Health Center. Dr. Andrew Robbins is the volunteer ophthalmologist who staffs this vision clinic which serves Price Hill and Westwood.

The fourth clinic opened in August at Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired serving College Hill, North College Hill and Mt. Healthy. Dr. Richard Kerstine is the primary volunteer physician staffi ng this clinic.

Both clinics are part of a strategy to bring sight saving eye care to Cincinnati’s low income and high unemployment neighborhoods. All patients at The Foundation clinics are living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty level and have no commercial or private eye insurance.

The Foundation’s outreach program began in 2008 with lectures on the aging eye and basic screenings in community centers, churches, senior centers, and community screening programs. The following year, The CEI Foundation opened its fi rst permanent comprehensive clinic in the basement of the Roselawn Lutheran Church in the Roselawn neighborhood. After seeing almost 5,000 patients by the end of 2014, The Foundation raised funds to expand services into downtown by opening a second clinic site at the St. Vincent de Paul Center in the West End in 2015. This was followed by the 2016 expansions into Price Hill and North College Hill.

Dr. Andrew Robbins, The CEI Foundation Vision Clinic volunteer at the Good

Samaritan Hospital Free Health Center in Price Hill.

“Right in Cincinnati, our own backyard . . . we have people who desperately need eye care. It is almost like a third world country, but through The Foundation, we are able to give care to them.”_________

Dr. James Faulkner, The CEI Foundation Vision Clinic volunteer at Roselawn and Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

“As a physician, it is not unusual to see the amazed reaction when a child gets glasses for the fi rst time, but you never expect to see that with an adult. Several of my pa-tients have had a whole new world opened up to them.”_________

Chris Faust, President and CEO of Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

“We are excited to host The CEI Vi-sion Clinic. Between North College Hill, College Hill and Mt. Healthy, there are many who need the care that the Vision Clinic provides, and the fact that it is able to treat indi-viduals with low or no income is so needed in our community.”

Through the generous support of the foundations and contributors listed here, The CEI Foundation projects that it will see 2,000 patients annually at its clinics.

Advanced Research is Saving SightIt almost seems like a fairy tale, but ophthalmology research is leading to miraculous cures. Cures like restoring sight to the blind and creating a prosthetic iris that restores normal vision to a young woman sounds almost biblical. But they are a reality, and not as rare as you would think.

Amanda Aswell developed chickenpox at age nine like so many children. However, unlike most children, this virus morphed into a dangerous disease, Steven-Johnson Syndrome, which caused the top layer of her skin to die and shed as well as effecting mucous membranes. As a result, Amanda spent six months in a Boston burn hospital recovering from the disease. Her recovery was complete, except for one thing — she was blind. After seeking care for her blindness with no results, Amanda attended a school for the blind in Colorado, got a seeing eye dog, went to college, married, and had a full life as an independent blind woman.

Twenty years later, Amanda’s aunt called her to tell her about a doctor who was having success with Steven-Johnson blindness. After much encouragement by her husband, Amanda met with CEI’s Dr. Ed Holland, the leading expert in treating Steven-Johnson Blindness. Using his

breakthrough treatment using live limbal stem cells donated by her mother and father, corneal transplants, and over a year and a half of treatment, Amanda regained her sight after twenty years of blindness. Amanda’s seeing-eye dog is now her pet, and she and her husband have adopted a visually impaired child.

Advanced research and the skill of CEI’s Dr. Ed Holland gave Amanda back her sight.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION UPDATE

The CEI Foundation hosted an 8-hour optometric continuing education program on January 8th, 2017 at Receptions in Loveland. Over 180 optometrists attended the seminar. A special thank you to our sponsors Marco and Allergan, our guest speakers Dr. Tim Petito and Dr. Lorie Lippiat, as well as Dr. Mary Beth Yackey, Dr. Erich Hinel, and Dr. Brian Kuhlman.

Tracy Kelly’s journey began with an ophthalmologist in Eastern Ohio, who was attempting to correct astigmatisms in both her eyes. The procedures worked for one eye, but dissolved her Iris and gave her glaucoma in her other. As the Executive Director of Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Athens, Ohio, Tracy’s work world revolved around children’s programing, especially after school and evening programing. With one eye fully dilated at all times, she developed night blindness, and her appearance became a major distraction when working with children.

Tracy was considering giving up her career, when she was referred to Dr. Michael Snyder at CEI who was leading a FDA research study on the prosthetic iris that he helped develop. Tracy qualifi ed for the study and received a prosthetic iris that so closely matches her non-effected eye that even she can’t see the difference. Tracy’s eyes are no longer at distraction, and she no longer has night blindness. Tracy is eternally grateful to Dr. Snyder and his research at CEI.

Advanced research and the skill of CEI’s Dr. Snyder means that Athens County children will continue to benefi t from Tracy’s caring and support.

Tracy Kelly
