NEWS FROM PASTOR RON— Well I sure hope you have been able to enjoy the great weather God has blessed us with this summer. I know

my garden at home is liking this summer much more than last year's. As we move into August, I would

imagine the Lord has many more blessings for us as well. Make sure you enjoy and celebrate God's creation!

I also want to thank everyone who has made worship a priority so far this summer — thank you for showing

up and encouraging one another as we gather to give God the glory he so richly deserves. Keep showing up!

Thanks are also due to all of you who participated in the Session's survey of the congregation. Let me share

the results with you:

Obviously, we are a diverse group in thinking about

our denomination. Please understand that the Session

is not pursuing any agenda or action in this regard, but

rather is seeking to keep Calvary as it has been even as

changes are taking place around us. A comparison

chart of Presbyterian denominations and the PCUSA

internal survey that I referenced will be available soon.

We will continue to have conversations as a congrega-

tion together regarding the interim developmental task

of Rethinking Denominational Linkages. But we will

also begin to work together on the final interim task of

Commitment to New Directions in Ministry. As we

together do that work, we will not be looking to replace any ministries in our midst, but rather seeking God's

leading and call to any new additional ministries for the Calvary family of faith. For example, as I shared at

the last Town Hall Gathering, restarting Stephen Ministry will be an aspect of this task. I am hoping that

everyone will find this an exciting time with increasing anticipation for God's new season of ministry that is

ahead.

Once again I want to encourage you all to lift our Pastor Nominating Committee up to the Lord in your

prayers. They are hard at work preparing the materials needed to accurately communicate who we are as a

congregation and the various ministries that God has in place here at Calvary. They have much work to do

before they can even begin to consider possible candidates. So give them a hug and a thank you every time

you see them and let them know you are praying for them.

This month we will hold our annual Calvary All-Church Picnic up at the Mud Mountain Dam park. I am

looking forward to a fun time together with much food and fellowship! I hope you have already made plans

to be there on Sunday afternoon, August 11.

Another opportunity that you may wish to add to your schedule or calendar, is a class I am calling Presbyte-

rians 101. I am still in the planning stages, but this should be something like a six-week class held on

Wednesday evenings. We will cover the Book of Confessions, the Book of Order, the 5 Points of Calvinism

(TUILIP) and other items desired by those attending. Your Christian Education Team is looking to have a

children's ministry alongside this class, and probably will include a dinner as well. Stay tuned! .

Please know that your Session Elders and Pastor Cindy and I are more than willing to talk with any of you

about the work we are doing in this transitional or interim time. I will close by sharing with you all this little

reminder from Scripture: “God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord

Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. There-

fore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1Thess. 5:9-11)

Blessings,

PNC UPDATE

Your PNC has spent the last month first brainstorming ideas and then starting the writing process for the narrative ques-

tion section of the Ministry Information Form (MIF). This is the heart of the MIF and consists of six comprehensive ques-

tions. As an example, one question we must answer is: "What is the congregation's or organization's vision for ministry?

Additionally describe how this vision is lived out." It sounds straightforward until you realize that the answer can be no

longer than 1500 characters including spaces and punctuation! Since writing by committee can be cumbersome, we di-

vided ourselves into three teams. Each team has written first drafts for their assigned questions. We are now in the phase

where we all go through each answer at our meetings and offer suggestions for improvement to the teams. Soon we will

finalize each answer so it will be ready for entry into the computer. We have also made significant progress on the other

sections of the MIF.

We would like all to know that we begin each meeting with spiritual reflection and prayer. As Pastor Ron has said several

times, God knows who our next pastor will be. But we are always mindful that we must continually pray for clarity, vi-

sion, and understanding as we work to accomplish the task before us.

In Christ,

Al Reiter, PNC Chair

MISSION 2013 – A CALL TO HERITAGE AND HOPE

Corner of Love is a growing international mission dedicated

to glorifying God through healthcare, education and clean

water projects in Nicaragua. We are now expanding our min-

istry to include a Sports Field—It’s All About The Kids.

The field will be a combination of soccer and baseball.

Calvary Presbyterian has the opportunity to assist with Cor-

ner of Love to make their dream a reality. They are seeking

to raise $19,000 over the next few months and have asked for

our partnership. The 1.33 acre field is located where Corner of Love works in San Ramon.

Everything starts by conditioning the turf and leveling the lot to create the playing fields.

They are working with a design team in Nicaragua on how to lay out the fields to fit both

into the field. Corner of Love holds the title for the field and as a church in Nicaragua all ac-

tivities are legal. Playing sports will help the children build character, pride and be a way to

open the door to a more meaningful relationship with Jesus. Nicaraguan pastors and coordi-

nators will organize the teams. An aerial bridge across La Lima River will give access to the

Plaza de Bondad. Envelopes are on the narthex table which you may use to send your per-

sonal donation. Please write “SPORTS FIELD” in the memo on your check.

Thank you for your generosity! Learn more about Corner of Love @ www.corneroflove.org

PRESBYTERIANS IN WORLD MISSION

Mission Networks will meet prior to the BIG TENT meeting on Aug. 1-3 in Louisville. Re-

cently Cherie Murchie participated in a conference call with other church leaders who sup-

port churches in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The network will address the issues

of how better to serve the Churches of Central Africa, Presbyterian in sharing common con-

erns/goals/best practices; facilitate learning from our brothers and sisters in Christ in Africa;

educate congregations about benefits of partnering with congregations, share meals and wor-

ship together. For 5 years Calvary has supported the CCAP Mandevu Daycare Center School

in Lusaka, Zambia with their feeding program for children. How I wish I could be there!

The main emphasis of the gathering will be to hear directly from PC(USA) co-workers in

those 3 countries and be updated with the new strategies just formed of Evangelism, Pov-

erty and Reconciliation. Hunter Ferrell, PC(USA) World Mission Director, states, “God’s

vibrant mission movement is already under way as we collectively find new ways of being

the church and of doing faithful and effective mission. Presbyterian World Mission’s role is

to create a space where local mission leaders can organize themselves, express priorities,

and work together to achieve them. Think about how effective it would be if 10,000 faith

communities across the USA came together with the sole purpose to effectively and meas-

urably improve the three areas stated above! Around the world families would be freed from

poverty, people would hear the good news of God’s intention for a realm of peace and jus-

tice and communities would be protected from the scourge of violent conflict. Dream Big!

Let’s be missional Christians who rise up together for the good of God’s creation as we step

into this exciting circle of global discipleship and be the church that Christ intends us to be.”

Taking Another Look at Reactions to Change

It has been nearly a year since we said goodbye to Pastor Fred and welcomed Pastor Ron. I would venture to

guess that in some degree or another, we are beginning to feel the stress that change can make. I remember

when we took a humorous look at change by studying the book “Our Iceberg is Melting.” In that book a group

of penguins made a life-changing move from being at home on just one iceberg to becoming nomadic pen-

guins as a way to survive. In that book we saw a variety of responses to the change process: disbelief, anger,

anticipation and finally acceptance. As I listen to the comments in our town hall meetings, it seems appropri-

ate to list the various stages in response to change. But first I wish to make a clarifying statement:

Just because we have spent time on what is happening in our denomination, we are not currently anticipating a

major shift in our church affiliation. And second, we are looking at some new visions for doing ministry at

Calvary, but in the context of building upon what we already do well. With that said, take a look at the com-

mon responses to change that occur in any setting. I have added my own perceptions of where we are at Cal-

vary.

Shock or grief: It takes time to adjust to the loss of a pastor. I believe most of us have now come to ac-

cept that some things will be different with a new pastor. People may miss Fred, but I do not sense

acute grief over his leaving.

Denial: For some Calvary folks, the changes in the PCUSA seem far removed from what goes on here at

Calvary. Some may wish to continue with business as usual.

Anger: It is inevitable that the discussions about denominational linkages and creating new visions in

ministry have generated some strong feelings. We do not all agree. Keep in mind that these feelings

are normal. The good thing about our town meetings is that we are encouraged to make our thoughts

known and we still can. As a corollary to anger, some of us may feel tired. We would like to settle

things and move on.

Passive Acceptance: To some degree, things will change for us at Calvary. Some folks reach a stage of

acceptance. “I suppose we have to deal with this so might as well get with it.”

Exploration: How do we move forward from here? That is the question that is behind the final interim

task of exploring new commitments in ministry. We may bring back some successful programs that we

have done before. We may add new ministry projects that will continue to help members grow in faith.

Keep in mind “new” does not mean throw out what is working. It means looking ahead for new things

that will enhance our mission and vision.

Challenge: in this stage we move ahead as part of continuous improvement. Obstacles are removed and

there is forward movement.

Each of us will go through these stages at varying speeds and will recycle through the process more than once.

Keep in mind that we are still relying upon God to guide us. Study, prayer and open minds and hearts will get

us to the place that God has already intended for us.
