The Rector Speaks:

Epiphany greetings! We are basking in the light of Christ’s revelation

to the Nations, and what a glorious light it is! In some ways, it is fitting

that our Annual Meeting takes place during the Season after Epiphany,

for the meeting is an opportunity to shed light on all that God has done

in our common life at Trinity on the Hill.

One of the gems in our Prayer Book is The Catechism, a wonderful re-

source for education about the ministry of all baptized Christians. It

offers this statement, among others, about the ministry of the laity:

“The ministry of lay persons is…to take their place in the life, worship,

and governance of the Church.” The Annual Meeting is a rich oppor-

tunity for you to take your place in the governance of our parish, and is

an important opportunity to make your voice heard in our common life.

Please make it a point to be present at our Annual Meeting on January

24th, immediately following our 10:30 service. May the light of Christ

shine upon you in these coming weeks. See you at the Annual Meeting!

Peace,

Chris+

January is a time of beginnings – a new page on a new calendar, a new set of resolutions, a new hope in

the future. At Trinity on the Hill, we are writing a new chapter in our life in Christ, a chapter in which

each of us will play a part. How will our story turn out? It is up to you and me.

Another term for “Church” is “Body of Christ.” Each of us was created in God’s image and, bound by

love of God and of one another, we become something greater than the sum of our individual persons. It

is a wonderful feeling, but it is not without some strings attached.

When we were baptized, we were accepted into a loving family. Those around us pledged to take spiritual

care of us, to help us to find our place in God’s kingdom. Today, as full fledged members of the Church,

we welcome others into Christ’s Body, taking responsibility for them just as our predecessors did for us.

How do we carry out this responsibility? By being active members of the church family, by treating it

with the same care that we treat our immediate family. If you did nothing to help around the house, would

you expect to enjoy the love and fellowship of your family members? Of course not – more likely there

would be a sharp rebuke for laziness. In return for your love, your care, your work, you receive love in

return. More than that, you have the opportunity to show your love for others. That is a gift in itself.

Our church family is no different. Each of us is richer for the time and treasure that we contribute to

spreading God’s word. It is an investment with astonishing returns. Rather than wonder how we might fit

the church into our busy schedules, we should be thinking of what we

might eagerly volunteer to do. What is more important than your

soul? At the end of a long life (hopefully), how will you explain that

you “did not have time” to participate in the life of the church? If you

are shy about volunteering, make up your mind today – right now – to

be an active part of Trinity on the Hill. Call the office at 662-5107 or

stop by to ask how you can help. Make coffee, shovel snow, help with

audits, join a ministry, help the Altar Guild prepare Christ’s table,

there is much to be done.

It’s a new year and a new page has been turned in our lives. What will

each of us write on that page?

2016 Vestry Candidates

Linda Corliss

I have been a member of TOTH since I moved with my husband Stu, and my

sons to Los Alamos in 2007. My children and I have been welcomed into the

church and feel it is our spiritual home. While my boys have served over the

years as acolytes, I have served as a Sunday School teacher, worked for three

years on the Audit Committee, and most recently as an usher and reader at the

10:30 service. I welcome the opportunity to serve on the Vestry and help guide

our church under our new leadership.

Kandice Favorite

I have been a member of Trinity on the Hill for about 16 years. During

that time, I have led the young family ministry, taught Sunday School,

sung with Generations and the Chancel Choir, and served on the vestry. As

our parish faces into new adventures and challenges under the leadership of

our new rector, I want to serve on the vestry to help guide us through them in

the best way possible.

Mandie Gehring

When I moved to Los Alamos 2 1/2 years ago, I decided to attend a service at

TOTH because of the focus on community service evident on its website. I stayed

for the people and the worship. Although I was recently confirmed, my father is a

minister and I attended Christian churches my entire life. I currently serve as an

offering counter and have participated in a Trinity Builders mission. Professional-

ly, I am a staff physicist at LANL and a former president of the ~380 member

postdoctoral association. I am honored and grateful to have the opportunity to

serve on the vestry early in my Episcopalian life, and I hope to learn and grow as

I use my skills and experiences to serve my church and spiritual family.

4th nominee…

Nominations from the floor will be taken at the Annual Meeting… Think about serving!

A New Adult Education Series Starting in January

Face to Face with God: The Incredible Richness of Eastern Spirituality

God became man so that man might become god. (St. Athanasius)

For two thousand years, the Orthodox Church has maintained that everyone can see the face of God, that

everyone is destined to be a saint. Our brothers and sisters in the Eastern Church call this theosis, the un-

ion of the person with God, and they consider it an eminently achievable and even necessary goal.

Starting in January, Steve Younger will lead a series of ten discussions on the spirituality of the Eastern

Orthodox Church. Together we will explore a wide range of topics in Orthodox thought that can bring

each of us closer to God. These include:

The Jesus Prayer: Ten words that change lives

To see the face of God – icons as windows into a deeper reality

The Eucharist as a direct encounter with Christ

Living the Bible with the first Christians

Total immersion in God: The experience of the Desert Fathers and Mothers

Practical instructions on finding God: Eastern mystics speak to us today

How Anglicans build on their Orthodox heritage

The series will include film clips, suggestions for further reading and, for those who may miss a Sunday,

handouts that summarize what was discussed.

There is great depth and beauty in Orthodox spirituality which is, after all, the foundation of our Anglican

tradition. Come and share in this exploration of our Orthodox heritage!

When and where: Every Sunday at 9:30, January 31- April 10 (except Easter), in Sherrill Hall.
