DID YOU KNOW?
I’m sure most people
know the ‘basics’ of the
Reformation:
• Luther’s disagreement with the Catholic
Church
• The 95 Theses
• The Small Catechism
• Luther’s trial
• Luther’s refusal to go back on what he said
Did you know that ‘Justification by faith
alone’ (Sola Fide in Latin) forms the very heart
of the Lutheran doctrine? Did you know that
Martin Luther said that this very article is the
one on which the church stands or falls? To be
justified by faith alone means that we can’t do
anything on our own to gain our salvation. Only
the work of Jesus Christ can do that for us and
it is in this work that we must have faith.
Martin Luther was so passionate about justifi-
cation by faith alone, but not because it was his
invention. He was so passionate about it
because it is scriptural. (See Galatians 2:16,
Ephesians 2: 8-9, Romans 3: 28)
If you didn’t already know…..now you do!!

HOLY BAPTISM
In Holy Baptism the triune God delivers us from the forces of evil, puts our sinful self to death, gives
us new birth, adopts us as children, and makes us members of the body of Christ, the church.
The Christian community at worship celebrates God’s gift of baptism in a number of ways. The sacrament itself normally takes place in the midst of the worshiping assembly as a sign that in baptism we are made one with Christ and with the whole people of God. On behalf of the whole church, we promise support to new sisters and brothers, confess the faith with them, and welcome them into the body of Christ. Water connected to the Word - God’s saving promise in Jesus Christ - is at the center of the baptismal celebration.
Although a person is baptized once, the gift of baptism continues throughout a Christian’s life. Instruction in the faith for a life of discipleship is part of the preparation of those who are to be baptized or their parents and sponsors. The ongoing nurture of that faith is part of the congregation’s ministries of formation, education, service, and evangelical witness.
SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE
On Sunday, November 3, All Saints Day, we will be celebrating the lives of saints who have gone before us. In the first stage of the celebration we will light candles for all those who have been buried through the ministry of St. Paul’s in the past year. In the second stage of the liturgy, we
may light a candle to commemorate the life of anyone who has left a hole in our lives by their death. There will be one service only, at 10:00 am. If you would like to participate in this special service by lighting a candle, please fill out the form included in this bulletin. Drop it in the collection plate or bring it to the church office today.
KEEP IT REAL! BRING IT HOME!
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disci-ples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ 33They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’ 34 Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving grace and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
GOD’S WORD: Reader Marlene Alexiuk
↓ FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD: 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the LORD’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.
L. The Word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 46 (congregation reads bold parts)
L. 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
C. 2 Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. L. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. C.
5 God is in the midst of the city;
it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. L. 6 The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. C.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge. L. 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. C.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. L. 10 ‘Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.’ C.
11 The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.
SECOND READING: Romans 3:19-28
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For ‘no human being will be justified in his sight’ by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, irrespective of law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinc-tion, 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteous-ness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.
L. The Word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God.
↑ Gospel Acclamation: “Alleluia” - p. 205 Alleluia! Lord and Savior, open now your saving word. Let it burn like fire within us; speak until our hearts are stirred. Alleluia! Lord, we sing, for the good news that you bring.
HOLY GOSPEL: John 8:31-36
Congregational response after the announcement: Glory to you, O Lord.
