followed in the footsteps of history. In 1949,NATO was created in the Andrew W.Mellon Auditorium with the signing of theNorth Atlantic Treaty.

Left: In the end, it was the music that dominated the evening and soared like thevictories of the human spirit everyone gathered to honor. With The Duke EllingtonHigh School Jazz Orchestra in the background, Stevie Wonder electrifies the audience with his vocals.

“Mack the Knife.” Ertegun wouldgo on to sign some of the most leg-endary names in rock, including theRolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. He is also a founder and chairmanof the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Over the years, NRH’s GalaVictory Awards® has recognized famous faces like Kirk Douglas, RayCharles, Gloria Estefan, HeatherMills McCartney, Sammy Davis,Jr., and Bob Dole, along side everyday men and women. They all share one thing in common – avictory of the human spirit. Theyare individuals who serve as shiningexamples of the abilities of personswith disabilities.

Before leaving the stage, StevieWonder asked, “If blessed with thegift of sight, what would I mostwant to see?” His answer spoke of acommon hope we all share, “I wantto see us commit ourselves to a land

where fear cannot put dreams tosleep.” He also had a personal message for everyone in the audience who had gathered to improve health care for personswith disabilities, “thank you for unselfishly taking what you heardin your heart and moving it to aplace of contribution.”

expand access to specialized care. The evening’s keynote speaker,

Dean Kamen, the visionary inventorof the portable dialysis machine, theiBOT™ 3000 Mobility System andthe Segway™ Human Transporter, challenged researchers to continuetheir pioneering work. “Remember,”he said, “the easy stuff – the wheel –has already been invented.”Researchers today are wrestling withthe toughest questions and cannotallow themselves to be discouragedif the answers are hard to come by.“Innovation means becoming comfortable with failure,” Kamentold the crowd. “But with the rightvision and the right technology, wecan move forward,” he added.

One family who has made a significant investment in the futureof research is the late Otto Rueschand his wife Jeanne. Through theirgenerosity, plans for the ChristophRuesch Research Center were expanded to include a facility thatwould bring all of NRH Researchunder one roof and closer to thepeople they serve – our patients. For their vision and leadership, theCenter is named in honor of theirson, Christoph. The GEICOPhilanthropic Foundation, theAaron and Lillie Straus Foundationand dozens of other contributorsprovided additional support.

During hiskeynote speech, Dean Kamen deliversan important message to donors andfriends gathered for the grand opening.“You make your living by what you do,”he said, “but you make your life by whatyou give.”

n January 25, just days after the PresidentialInauguration, NationalRehabilitation Hospitalcelebrated a new begin-ning of its own with the

dedication of the ChristophRuesch Research Center. Tenmonths in construction and morethan two years in planning, the$2.2 million center brings togethermore than 30 research scientistsand other staff.

The Center was fundedthrough a combination of Federalgrants and private contributions.Explaining why NRH has been sosuccessful in attracting funding,Congressman John Murtha fromPennsylvania said, “We trust youbecause you deliver results.” Asampling of those results was ondisplay during the technologydemonstration fair. New Century Campaign. Underthe unflagging leadership of thelate Otto J. Ruesch, a dear friendand former vice chairman of theNRH Board of Directors, thecampaign surpassed our ambitious$5 million goal – raising a total of$5.2 million!

The New Century Campaigncommenced in 2002 to help builda solid foundation for NRH’s future. This endeavor already has produced tangible results, helping us to create the newNational Center for Children’sRehabilitation, a joint service withChildren’s National MedicalCenter; the new, state-of-the artChristoph Ruesch ResearchCenter, named for Otto Ruesch’s

young son; NRHhealthtown.com,our new, interactive Web-basedpatient resource; and the EndowedChair in Medical Rehabilitation. The NRH Board and staff extendour sincere thanks to everyonewho has contributed to the NewCentury Campaign and other appeals. We especially salute thosewho have provided major fundingfor individual facilities and programs, which we have chosento name for their benefactors, now

President’s Message

Edward A. Eckenhoff,President and Chief Executive Officer

n late January, during the opening ceremony for the newChristoph Ruesch ResearchCenter at the NationalRehabilitation Hospital, I wasdeeply moved and overcome

with gratitude for the many giftsthe Hospital has received. In 2005, we are blessed by havingthe greatest gift of all – a team ofdedicated professionals who eachday provide the very best in medical care, therapy, and otherservices. We are also indebted toour Board of Directors, Board ofAssociates, and corps of volunteers. These individuals give hundreds of hours annually to guide us,brighten patients’ holidays, and assist with administrative tasks

and special events like the NRHGolf Classic and Gala VictoryAwards®. Today, my thoughts alsoturn to all of the individuals, corporations, and foundationswhose gifts and grants help NRHfulfill its mission of Adding life toyears® for children and adults withdisabilities. I am especially pleasedto report that, because of the commitment of many people andorganizations, in December 2004we successfully completed the

recognized on walls throughout the Hospital building. Recently named facilities and programs include the:

• The Aaron Straus & Lillie Straus Foundation Therapy Gym (in memory of Richard Barnett) in the National Center for Children’s Rehabilitation

• A.W. Smith and Marcia Marsh Administrative Suite

• Christoph Ruesch Research Center• Esther Cook Children’s Care

Assistance Fund (bequest)• GEICO Technology

Demonstration Corridor• John Keyser Meditation Room• John P. Murtha Assistive

Technology Research Center• Otto and Jeanne Ruesch Center

for Applied Biomechanics

Recent financial support has also helped NRH to purchase needed equipment, provide financial help to those in need through the Patient Care Assistance Fund, fund the driver training program, and conduct patient and professional education programs.

Each contribution – whether $50 or $50,000 or $500,000 – enables NRH to assist children and adults with disabilities resulting from devastating traumatic injuries, stroke, amputation, and other conditions. Indeed, with changes in reimbursement for rehabilitative care and our community’s signifi-cant need for charity care, there is no better time to support NRH.

We encourage your continued support of NRH by responding generously to our Annual Fund appeal, including NRH in your will, or contributing any amount at any time. I also invite you to meet with me or our development team to discuss other opportunities to help. Again, we thank you for your ongoing support and for Adding life to years® for the patients we serve. We are truly blessed by your generosity!
