1-180 St. Thomas of Villanova TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 21, 2014 A Note from Fr. Joe…. Now that we’re all back and hopefully settling into a routine, I thought I’d take this opportunity to highlight a few things that you might have missed during the course of the summer. At the Rosemont Chapel property, we updated the air conditioning for the Chapel and Auditorium, as well as resealed the parking lot. Kencrest Day Care closed, as of June 30 th ; while we actively search for a new tenant, we’re using the old school building for religious education classes and other parish-related activities. On the Villanova campus, the University completed a chilled underground piping project that ultimately, among other things, will assist in the updating of air conditioning for the Villanova Church. The Parish Building Subcommittee will be meeting this week to begin a review and update of our 5 year Maintenance and Capital Improvement Plan. Finally, last, but not least, we welcomed a new member to our Parish Staff – Mr. Gregory Stejskal, Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry – at the beginning of August. Although Mrs. Helen Savini planned to retire with Dr. Ernie Sherretta in May, she since agreed to stay on as Religious Education Secretary in this time of transition. Looking ahead, I’d ask you to mark your calendars for the weekend of October 11-12, as we plan to celebrate our patron, St. Thomas of Villanova, at all the parish Masses. There will be an opportunity for fellowship following the liturgies. His actual feast day is Friday, October 10 th , which will be commemorated at the 12:05pm Mass in the Rosemont Chapel. In addition, in the year ahead, we’ll be hearing and talking a lot about the World Meeting of Families, to be held in Philadelphia from September 22 nd through the 27th, 2015. The hope is that Pope Francis will be able to join us. Please continue to check the bulletin and website, as more information becomes available. As soon as they’re ready, prayer cards for the event will be placed inside the front cover of the hymnals. We’re encouraged to use the prayer, as we prepare to welcome the world to Philadelphia. Having held our Joint Councils and Staff Meeting this past Monday, I can assure you that we’re looking forward to ministering with you, as we continue to work together to make St. Thomas of Villanova a vibrant and hospitable faith community. Each individual Council – Pastoral, Finance, and Stewardship – will hold its first regular meeting in October. Please remember that there is a suggestion box, staffed by Pastoral Council, on the front page of the parish website. Your ideas and thoughts are always welcome. God Bless! Fr. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, legalizing abortion on demand has killed more than 50 million unborn children over the past four decades — the equivalent of roughly one in six living Americans, an entire generation extinguished. But alongside the killing spree, and despite the contempt of abortion activists and unfriendly media, the prolife counter witness of millions of Americans has also continued. One of the prolife counter witnesses, 40 Days for Life, is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history, helping people in local communities end the injustice of abortion. It has three components: peaceful and prayerful vigil at abortion clinics, daily prayer and fasting and community outreach. I encourage your support of the 40 Days for Life Campaign on September 24—November 2, 2014. Your participation is an opportunity to prove the strength of our convictions; to show to the world what we really believe and about the sanctity of human life. For information about 40 Days for Live, please visit their website http://40daysforlife.com. For the local campaigns in the Archdiocese, please visit www.40daysforlife.com/chestercounty; http://vigilcalendar.com/norristown/main/help or http://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/philadelphia/ May the Lord give you peace and every blessing. Sincerely yours in Christ. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia

STV PARISH NOTICE:

There will only be a 7:00pm Mass on Sunday, September 28th,

in the Villanova Church. There are no 5:30pm and 9:00pm Masses on this Sunday.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

In honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, we’re happy to announce that, once again this year, we will be celebrating the blessing of animals on Sunday, October 5th at 1:30pm and on Monday, October 6th at 9:00am, with our Pre-School children. Both times will be in the courtyard between the Rosemont Chapel and the Parish Offices. You are invited to join in either blessing, as we give thanks to God for the love and companionship of our pets. All creatures great and small are welcome, but please remember that dogs should be on leashes; cats and other pets should be in suitable containers. After the communal blessing, the friars will administer individual blessings for those who would like – for themselves and their animals. Wonderful are all God’s works!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18th

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

On Saturday, October 18th during the 5:00pm liturgy in the Rosemont Chapel we will have an Anointing of the Sick. The ANOINTING OF THE SICK “is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as any one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for that person to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived” (Constitution on the Liturgy, #73). This is an important sacramental celebration for the whole parish community. It is our opportunity to actively support the members of this parish family who are in need of the Church’s Ministry. If you know anyone who might benefit from this sacrament, please bring him/her. Any questions, call Anne Murphy at 610-525-4801 or email [email protected].

Please note on the check that this is a Special Collection for the Middle East. Funds will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services and other Catholic agencies working in partnership with the local Church in the affected Middle Eastern areas to meet the most urgent humanitarian needs facing the people. Special envelopes will be available in the Villanova Church and Rosemont Chapel this weekend. Thank you for your generosity.

McGuiness, PhD, will talk about her new much-acclaimed book, Called to Serve: A History of Nuns in the United States. Dr. McGuinness - Professor of Religion and Vice President of Mission at LaSalle University - will share the extraordinary stories of women who helped shape American Catholicism, and discuss the evolving role of women in the 21st Century Church. One book reviewer had this to say about Called to Serve. “For generations of American Catholics, the face of their church was, quite literally, a woman’s face. McGuinness recovers the compelling story of these sisters and puts them back at the center of American Catholic history.“ Please join us for a fascinating evening. There will be wine and cheese and a chance to socialize. Bring a friend. Please RSVP to Kathy at 610-525-4801 or [email protected].

PROCEDURE FOR INVESTIGATING A

CHURCH DECLARATION OF NULLITY

1) PRELIMINARY STEPS Contact the Tribunal directly or talk with your parish priest about your marriage situation to see whether you need an annulment. Before a case is initiated at the Tribunal, you must have already obtained a civil divorce. If you are already divorced and wish to begin annulment proceedings, call the Tribunal at (215) 587-3750. You will be sent a questionnaire to fill out. Complete this questionnaire, which will ask for the basic facts and a brief explanation of the events of your marriage, and return it to the Tribunal. You will then be scheduled for an initial hearing held in the Tribunal office. During this interview, you will be asked about your family background, the courtship, the marriage itself and its termination.

2) THE TRIBUNAL PROCESS The other party, your ex-husband or ex-wife, is sent a letter by the Tribunal asking his/her participation and testimony. If he/she refuses, the case continues on its own merit without his/her cooperation. Four witness questionnaires are given to you for family, friends, or anyone else who can verify your basic testimony or add additional information about your marriage. These forms are notarized by a priest or civil notary and returned by mail to the Tribunal by the individual witnesses. The length of the whole procedure is about nine to twelve months and the present cost is $800.00. In cases of true need, verified by your parish priest, requests for reductions in these court costs can be made to the Tribunal. In some cases, as part of the final decision in the case, the person receiving the annulment and the person he/she would like to marry in the Catholic Church are asked to meet with a counselor to evaluate their readiness for remarriage in the Catholic Church. 3) THE ROLE OF THE TRIBUNAL The Tribunal process does not put you in the role of placing blame on the other party. The Decree of Nullity has no effect on the legitimacy of children or other matters such as custody or property settlements which are decided by civil law. An affirmative decision allows the parties to marry in the Catholic Church and to receive the Eucharist.

The golf course features a superbly conditioned links-style layout combined with a variety of undulating putting surfaces that challenge players at every tee. The day begins at 10:00am with check-in, followed by driving range practice time, lunch, and shotgun start at 12:00 p.m. After a day on the course, golfers will enjoy a cocktail reception and dinner.
