Welcome to December! I can’t believe we are already entering the
winter season. I know we are collectively hoping for a lot less snow and
cancelled school days than we had last year!
We kick off the holiday season on Monday, December 8th with the
Intermediate 5th and 6th grade holiday concert. Please plan to attend
at 7pm at the high school. It’s always a wonderful concert. Mrs. Miller,
Mr. Mackley, Mrs. Dietz, and Mr. Howell dedicate themselves to helping
the students put on a fabulous show. Don’t forget your cameras!
Our 3rd annual SBI spelling bee is coming up on December 12th.
Students took the qualifying test, and the top three spellers from each
homeroom will be selected to participate in the live spelling
bee. Parents are welcome to attend—a schedule will be sent
shortly with each grade level’s competition time. Happy
holidays from all of the staff and students at SBI!
Did you Know? Our AR (Accelerated Reader) theme this year is: Reading Wide and Deep. Your child's
goals are created with his/her ELA teacher. Our building Reading Challenge is to read
to the bottom of the ocean at 35,994 feet by reading that many books by May 12th
when our visiting author arrives. Author Michael Patrick O'Neill will be sharing with us
his underwater adventures and books he has written about them. The library has been
turned into an underwater scene and Mrs. Hoover will be tracking our reading as a
building through the number of AR quizzes taken.
Our next upcoming AR event is a movie night with an
aquatic theme. Students may take quizzes in the library as
well as watch from a choice of 2 movies in other parts of
the building on January 9th at 5:00.
Stride Total: $11, 822.67! Great job! Happy
holidays from the PTO!

Happy Holiday
Give – a –ways.
Everyday that a student
eats school lunch, you can
enter to win cool prizes!
One prize will be given
away every Friday in
December.
Operation Help a Neighbor – It is not too late to help! If you are in a giving mood this holiday
season, please consider this unique in-house giving program. The Guidance Counselors and
Social Workers confidentially match your donations of toys, school supplies, clothing, and
hygiene items with NESD students in need. 100% of what is given stays right here in
Northeastern! We still have over 50 children who need sponsors, ranging in ages from
Kindergarten and up. If you would like to give but can’t sponsor a child, any donation will
help. Items in high demand include the following: board games, sports balls, hygiene items
(deodorant, toothpaste, body spray, soap, shampoo, brushes, hair accessories, etc.), warm
winter coats, and Giant gift cards.
Fall Fest - A big THANK YOU to the parent volunteers who made our
recent Fall Fest TRACKS reward event a success. Students rotated
through stations including games, sports, and a bounce house. One
of the stops had the students hand-make hundreds of cards and
letters wishing residents of Pleasant Acres Retirement Community a good day. These well-
wishes each had a sticker placed on them that read, "A random act of kindness project from
the students of Shallow Brook Int., Northeastern SD."
Title I November News
Page 3 Shallow Brook Intermediate Volume 6, Issue 5
Thank you to all the parents who attended
the Title 1 November Parent Information Session held during conference week. It was so nice to meet you
and hear how diligently you work to help to encourage your child as a reader. As always, your suggestions for
improving our Title 1 program are welcome. In Title 1 classes, students have been spending much time analyzing character traits, author’s purpose, text features, and text structures. During the
month of December, learning about and writing figures of speech such as similes, metaphors, alliteration and personification. Now on to holiday thoughts… a book as a Christmas present! What a “novel” idea! (No pun intended!) Please consider some of these classic novel titles as holiday gifts: “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” by Brian Selnick (basis for the current movie “Hugo”), “Crickwing”by Janell Cannon, “The Misadventures of Maude March” by Audrey Couloumbis, “The Great Brain” by John D. Fitzgerald, “Jumanji” by Chris Van Allsburg, “Sudako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” by Eleanor Coerr, “Shiloh” by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, “Walter, the Story of a Rat” by Barbara Wersba, “Keeping Score” by Linda Sue Park, “Love that Dog” by Sharon Creech, “No Talking” by Andrew Clements, “Waiting for Normal” by Leslie Connor, “Tale of Despereaux” by Kate DiCamillo. Enjoy reading books (both literature and informational) together as a family during the holiday vacation! Sharing a text brings comprehension levels to the highest level!
