A note from the Monmouth School Headmaster

Four students from Monmouth School have made it through to the UK final of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition after wowing judges at the regional heats.

6th Form students Louis, Omar, Lennon and Jason impressed the judges with their Automated Ball Bearing Selection and Placement project, a real business challenge set by Renishaw, one of the world’s leading engineering and scientific technology companies.

The students will go on to join over 200 other project teams from across the UK in the finals, which take place during The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair at the Birmingham NEC, March 2017.

The Big Bang Competition is an annual contest designed to recognise and reward young people’s achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), as well as helping them build skills and confidence in project-based work. The competition is open to 11-18 yr olds, and gives participants the chance to compete for top prizes such as international experiences worth over £50,000 and prestigious awards such as UK Young Scientist and UK Young Engineer of the Year.

  • GEORGE SHUFFREY STRING COMPETITION 2016

Held in the Music School, this competition was adjudicated by Head of Strings of the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, Stephen McDade.

Arnold opened with a committed and gutsy performance of the overture of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (on the Bass) and Sam fol-lowed with an accomplished rendition of Allegro. Edward gave a stirring account of MacMillan’s Sabre Dance and Christopher a very poised per-formance of Telemann’s Allegro. Michael took to the floor to play Bohm’s Sarabande and Arnold once more followed (on the ‘cello this time) with the famous Prelude from Bach’s ‘Cello Suite No. 1. Ethan gave a very controlled account of Dudziardz by Wieniawski and Jason then gave a most atmospheric account of a piece by Xu Jiangde. Tudor gave us Parry’s Sonata No. 1 on the harp and Roderick closed with an exciting account of Copland’s famous Rodeo. Arnold took second prize for his rendition of Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg on the Double Bass, and first prize was taken by Jason for his electric performance on the Erhu of his teacher’s composition.

ROWERS DELIVER CHARITY CHEQUEMonmouth House were very proud to present their charity cheque to Bridges Community Centre Director, Mark Walton today.

The students took part in an epic rowing machine challenge, covering a distance equivalent to travelling from Dover to Calais, and back! A particular well done goes to Gabriel, Charlie and Max who were the top fund-raisers in their respective year groups. Bridges will be putting the money towards their ‘Befriending project’.

    JUNIOR SCIENCE SLEUTHS COLLECT EVIDENCE

This week’s Junior Science club needed our scientists to be forensic Crime Scene Investigators! They collected evidence, pulled fingerprints from glassware and used microscopy to identify hair samples. Well done boys... we hope you managed to solve the crime!

In the U13 race, we came 5th out of 12 teams, with Josh finishing 12th and Oskar 20th out of 89 runners. The U15 team gained bronze medals, the most successful run-ners being Alex (14th, and a year under age) and Rowan (23rd). The senior team went one better and won silver medals, with George 20th, Robbie 24th, Oliver 29th, Ben 39th and Marcel 41st. All of these will be eligible to run again next year, which bodes well!
