A reminder regarding Head Lice:

If your child is found to have head lice at school, the child will be sent home to have an over-the-counter Lice specific treatment. Please follow the directions on the packaging.

The West Ottawa district has a “No-Nit” policy. This mean that students are not permitted to return to school until they are free of live lice, and Nits (lice eggs).

When the student is ready to return, they need to be brought to school in the morning accompanied by an adult. If they still are found to have live lice or nits, they will not be permitted to stay at school.

The easiest way to distinguish between nits and dandruff or styling products, is that nits will stick to the hair. The nit combs provided with treatments, will not remove all nits. Some will need to be removed with your fingernails, starting at the nit and pulling all the way down the hair.

Please check all other family members in the household for lice, and treat them accordingly. After a child is lice and nit free, please continue to check them for the next 2 weeks to make sure the lice has not returned.

It is very important that the child return to school as soon as possible after being found to have lice in order to not in-terrupt their education. In most cases, the child should not miss more than a day of school to be treated. When the student has missed multiple days of school, because of head lice, they will start to accumulate unexcused absences.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school nurse or principal. Thanks for your coop-eration in helping us keep our school free of Head Lice.
