OF TRUSTA TRADITION

I CAN HONESTLY SAY IN ALL THE TIME WE’VE USED IT, WE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. THE FITTINGS ARE GOOD. THE PIPE IS GOOD. IT’S STRONG. WE LIKE IT. IF OTHER PLUMBERS AREN’T USING IT, THEY’RE MISSING OUT.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRCWSC) introduced the plan with Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt.

Key initiatives include:

• Improving infrastructure and increasing urban canopies

• Increasing overall tree coverage by 2050

• Building rooftops with green cover

• Improving urban water systems and energy efficiency.

According to CEO of University of Queensland, Professor Jurg Keller, trees and parks are vital for our wellbeing and improving a city or town’s livability.

“Trees and green parks need water. They save energy, improve our comfort and foster a social and active lifestyle – so greening our cities is critically important for our wellbeing,” said Mr Keller.

In addition, Mr Keller said heat waves are an emerging urban health crisis, and greening our cities helps reduce the problem.

CRCWSC will work with the Federal Government to develop a vision for greener Australian cities and work with the individual states to implement the plan.

“If water is added as an afterthought in the planning process, we miss major opportunities created by the integrated approach,” said Professor Darryl Low Choy, Urban Planning Expert, for CRCWSC.

“Cities need to maximise the benefits of all sources of water, including stormwater, groundwater and new water supplies such

as desalination and water recycling,” he said.

In addition, CRCWSC Urban Climate Researcher Professor Nigel Tapper shares evidence that a green, leafy park, tree-lined street or urban waterway could drop local temperatures by up to several degrees.

“These plans effect more than just physical layouts, crucially influencing both at macro and micro levels, how we as a society function,” said Mr Tapper.

Just add water... Experts plan to increase livability in Australian cities

Australia’s top water experts are welcoming a plan from the Federal Government to make our cities cooler and greener.

A TRADITION OF TRUST

Inspired after seeing PE-X products in Europe, John, who started his working life as a plumber, jumped at the chance to develop a system for Australia. Together with Glenn, they worked for three solid years with test after test to ensure the product would work perfectly for our conditions. Finally, in 1996 when they were satisfied they had something great, they packed Glenn’s station wagon and set out to launch Auspex and haven’t looked back.

Nearly 20 years on, Auspex is now the country’s leading PE-X piping crimp system, used by plumbers all around Australia every day. As you can imagine there must be a good reason for a system to last this long and you’d be right. With a never ending commitment to quality, innovation and a real understanding for what plumbers need, they have developed an incredibly loyal following. Blokes like Grant from Nar Nar Goon, a plumber for 40 years and an Auspex fan for 19, couldn’t imagine using anything else. He’s even converted his two sons.

“I’ve probably done hundreds of thousands of crimps over the time all without drama. It’s a good record.”

In a series of short videos, you can see and hear more from Grant, along with other plumbers, Sam, Joel and Ben, talk about why they love using Auspex products. They talk about things like simplicity, flexibility and reliability. And who could argue? Still the only Australian made PE-X system supported by a full 25 year warranty, Auspex continues to set the standard that others follow.

Using cleaner, greener technology in the HVAC industry doesn’t have to mean out with the old. The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), the world’s biggest network of food industry retailers and manufacturers, has committed to increasing energy efficiency by converting existing refrigeration systems to natural refrigerants.

The CGF is a global network comprising over 400 businesses for whom refrigeration is crucial. They rely on tens of millions of refrigeration installations worldwide, including around 1 million in Australia.

By implementing a wide range of natural refrigerant-based technologies that use hydrocarbon, ammonia and carbon dioxide, the CGF has found that their refrigeration systems are now superior in cost, performance and sustainability. Global Sustainability Director of the CGF, Ignacio Gavilan, will use the forum to describe the work they have done to develop, validate and optimise refrigeration systems, and how existing systems can be converted to natural refrigerants.

Most importantly, the CGF believes that industry-wide regulatory and educational requirements can provide a template for shifting the entire HVAC-R sector to this new, low emissions technology. Although there are still significant barriers to adopting natural refrigerants, Mr Gavilan will outline what the CGF is doing to address these barriers, in line with the work of the Montreal Protocol and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition.

High Performance Energy is a seminar driven conference, which provides guidance on energy efficiency in the built environment. All parties interested in reducing energy consumption and emissions are invited to attend and meet Mr Gavilan and some Australian members of the CGF.

London gets a new Super Sewer London’s 4.2 billion pound (AUD 8 billion), seven-year Super Sewer project is underway with the placement of a crane-supporting barge on the river Thames.

The barge will be used to prepare a new pier that will be used during the construction of the Super Sewer, which is being developed to provide a solution to pollution issues caused by the tens of millions of tonnes of sewage overflow that enters the Thames River every year.

The Super Sewer will intercept overflows from the 24 most polluting combined sewage overflows, before transferring the flows to east London for treatment. A 25 kilometre tunnel along which the overflows will be transported, is expected to begin construction in 2017 with completion by 2023.

London’s sewer system was constructed over 150 years ago by Sir Joseph Bazalgette. Although the brick-constructed tunnels are said

to still be structurally sound, they were not built to manage the capacity that is required today.

For more information go to www.tideway.london/the-tunnel

Interesting facts

The existing Combined Sewage Overflow are open on average once a week and almost 40 million cubic metres of sewage is emptied into the River Thames as a result each year.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will be 7 metres in diameter and will be built between 25 – 65 metres below ground.

The new system will also act as a storage tank, capable of containing up to 1.6 million cubic metres of sewage until it can be treated.

Even while navigating the far-reaching corners of the universe, we cannot escape the everyday fact of dealing with basic bodily functions. So just how do astronauts go to the toilet in zero gravity?

We’ve all seen the Simpsons episode where Homer opens a packet of chips in space. If such mayhem can be caused by a simple chip packet in anti-gravity, it makes you wonder how many technological adaptations have been made to make our everyday routines space-proof.

The puzzling predicament was recently answered by astronaut Tim Peake who shares the scoop on space poop: air suction.

During astronauts space “potty training” they learn how to use a suction hose that keeps everything in one place and in the toilet bowl.

“Take the cap off, turn on the fan and the airflow keeps everything going down the pipe. This works for both number one and number two. Simple as that,” said Tim.

One small step for man, one giant leap for intergalactic plumbing.
