AAOS

Your Source or Li elong Orthopaedic Learningf fAMERICAN ACADEMY OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEONS

Welcome notes from AAOS

In pursuit of the AAOS mission, which is serving our profession to provide

the highest quality musculoskeletal care, we strive to increase our partnership

with the Indian doctors to bring the latest advancement in trauma care to

India.

Further, to our endeavor, we are organizing the Trauma Conclave 2016 in

partnership with the IOA and our official Indian partner Insignia and Alkem

Bergen. This conclave would comprise of the best of AAOS lectures, which

would help manage trauma in a better way. We invite you for the

to be held on and at

At the end of the two days session, we would be providing a certificate for the

attendance.

We look forward to your presence at the conclave.

With best regards

Trauma th thConclave 2016 16 17 September, 2016 JW Marriott

Hotel, New Delhi.

Dear Doctor,As per the World Health Organization statistics, every year the lives of

approximately 1.25 million people are curtailed as a result of a road traffic

crash. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with

many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.

About three-quarters (73%) of all road traffic deaths occur among men.

Among young drivers, young males under the age of 25 years are almost 3

times more likely to be killed in a car crash as young females.

Young people are suffering, decapitating, dying, leading to many young

families grieving—we can avoid this misfortune by timely management of

trauma cases.

In the past two years, we have successfully discussed various newer trauma

management methods. The Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) is glad to

partner with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to bring

the Third Trauma Conclave, a forum to discuss and learn the latest in trauma

care.

The IOA is one of the largest professional organizations, which focuses on

academics, research, and social networking. It is a constantly growing

organization not only in terms of increasing memberships but also in all other

fronts like fellowships, CMEs, orations, and subspecialty meetings.

Once again this year, we look forward to your presence in this knowledge

exchange conclave.

Best Wishes,

Dr. Sudhir Kapoor

President

IOA

Welcome notes from IOA

Dear Doctor,India is one of the fastest growing economies, moving towards changing lifestyle and

improved standard of living. In this fast-paced life, trauma is becoming one of the

major health hazards, leading to mortality and morbidity.

In such situations, managing trauma in patients is critical. The AAOS with an objective

of tackling orthopedic-related conditions has managed to create a lot of relevant

content in trauma. To get a global understanding from the AAOS, we are planning for

'The Best of AAOS 2016.' The objective is to get the global learning on trauma

through International AAOS faculty and Indian experts all on one platform.

th thThe Trauma Conclave is expected to take place on 19 and 20 September, 2016 at

The Lalit Golf & Spa Resort, Goa. This highly credible conclave comprises of lectures

on Trauma management of proximal humerus, Humeral shaft, Femur, Upper

extremity, Tibia fractures, Distal tibia, Foot fractures and infections.

I cordially invite you to be a part of this knowledge conclave.

Thanking you!

Program Learning Objectives

Lower Extremity:

Upper Extremity:

1. Understand the deformities characteristically seen with proximal and distal tibial fractures.

2. Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of both intramedullary nailing and open reduction and

internal fixation with plate/screw constructs for the treatment of proximal and distal tibia fractures.

3. Be able to apply the techniques employed to obtain and maintain appropriate reductions of proximal

and distal tibial fractures

4. Understand the deformities characteristically seen with femoral fractures, particularly,

subtrochanteric and distal femoral fractures.

5. Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of both intramedullary nailing and open reduction and

internal fixation with plate/screw constructs for the treatment of proximal and distal femoral fractures.

6. Be able to apply the techniques employed to obtain and maintain appropriate reductions of proximal

and distal femoral fractures

1. Understand the treatment options for proximal humeral fractures to include non-operative

management, percutaneous pinning, open reduction and internal fixation with plates, intramedullary

nailing, hemiarthroplasty and reverse total arthroplasty.

2. Understand the reasons for fracture fixation failure and be able to apply techniques to minimize

failures in the treatment of proximal humerus fractures.

3. To better understand modern principles of fixation of humeral shaft, distal humeral and distal radius

fractures.

Summary

Case Presentations

1. Fractures of the proximal tibial metadiaphysis and proximal diaphysis are injuries commonly seen in

road traffic collisions.

2. These fractures may have concomitant injuries to the tibia either proximally or distal to this

fracture. In high energy mechanisms, a high suspicion for vascular injuries and/or compartment

syndrome should be maintained.

3. Intramedullary nailing may allow earlier weight-bearing in some cases.

4. Historically, intramedullary nailing has proven to be technically difficult & is associated with the classic

deformities of valgus, apex anterior angulation and posterior translation of the distal segment.

5. Multiple techniques have been developed to help overcome the obstacles related to the treatment of

these fractures.

6. Distal tibial fractures are fraught with many similar challenges as proximal. Multiple techniques have

been developed to help overcome the obstacles related to the treatment of these fractures.

7. Subtrochanteric femoral fractures are challenging due to the classic deformity of varus, shortening,

adduction and varus. Multiple techniques have been developed to help overcome the obstacles related

to the treatment of these fractures.

8. Distal femoral; fractures can be plated or nailed. Nailing these fractures requires care and multiple

techniques have been developed to help overcome the obstacles related to the treatment of these

fractures.

9. Proximal humerus fractures can be difficult to treat whether treating non-operatively or operatively.

10. Non-operative management is a realistic option in a majority of cases.

11. The choice of open reduction and internal fixation versus arthroplasty depends on the patient's

physiologic age, activity level, rehabilitation potential, fracture pattern and bone quality.

12. Humeral shaft, distal humeral, and distal radius fractures are common and challenging fractures.

Multiple techniques have been developed to help overcome the obstacles related to the treatment of

these fractures.

By the conclusion of the program, for each topic listed, participants will be able to:

Work through the decision making process in terms of which patient to operate upon

Identify which surgical option to select

Identify issues that may arise during the postoperative regimen
