GHV TRACK BOYS EXPECT TO EXCEL After weeks of preseason workouts the GHV boys’ track team appears to be ready for another successful season. Cardinal coach Kelsey Steffens has high hopes for her squad as the team returns a nice mix of strong distance performers and sprinters. Four of GHV’s letter winners will be working toward a repeat appearance at the Iowa State Track and Field Meet in late May. Looking to return to the state meet in distance events are Chase Smith and Logan Dalbeck. Smith, a senior, is com-ing off an individual title in last fall’s cross-country state meet and is hoping to place high in the 3200-meter run. Dalbeck, a junior, was also on the state champion cross-country squad and is working to earn a state meet medal in the 1600-meter run. Senior Ezra Marroquin was a state-qualifier last season in both the 200-meter and 400-me-ter dashes and will no doubt be favored to return in those

events. Senior Sam Cataldo was one of the state’s top hur-dlers and will be working to double-qualify again this year in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. With every one of last season’s individual qualifying events returning, Coach Steffens has high hopes of seeing them make another trip to the blue track of Drake Stadium. The Cardinals have a number of other talented letter win-ners returning that should add enough depth and make GHV a very competitive team. Adding options to the dis-tance races are Derek Brown and Ray Cataldo. As a junior Brown has plenty of experience on his resume while soph-omore Cataldo is also no stranger to competitive racing. Adding depth to the sprint events are senior David Cook and junior Conner Shaw. Johnny O’Connor will lend his experience to 400 and 800-meter races. The Cardinals have a total of 21 athletes on the roster this

year, many of them freshmen. Steffens expects contribu-tions from Holden Larson, Lucas Rayhons and Kyle Bell in sprint events, Nathan Larson and Reece Smith in distance events and Tyler Nielson in throwing events. “Compared to the last few years we are down in num-bers so it will be important to keep our athletes healthy throughout the season,” noted Steffens. “One of our team goals is to score in every event at meets. We have a very talented group of athletes who are dedicated to track and field so I am looking forward to a competitive season.” Coach Steffens is expecting the Cardinals and Bishop Garrigan to be among the leading teams in the Top of Iowa Conference this year. The Cards will open the season on Monday, April 4 at West Hancock.

GHV GIRLS TRACK PREVIEW With the track and field season just around the corner, the GHV girls’ track team has been putting in some long hours preparing for upcoming competition. The Cardinal girls are expecting another good season on the track with hopes of sending a number of events to the state track meet in May. The Cards will have plenty of enthusiasm as they prep for the post season, especially after learning that GHV will be hosting the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet. Cardinal coach Dyan Childress will build her squad around eight returning letter winners. Childress is hoping to assemble another tough shuttle hurdle relay team. With senior Miranda Jackson and sophomore Jillian Heitland back in action, the Cardinals are confident they’ll be able to fill the remaining two spots of that relay foursome. Senior sprinter Rachel Weaver is returning for her final season of Cardinal track. Junior distance specialist Rebekah

Larson will also add experience to the team along with four additional sophomores. Emma Whelan, Hannah Wellik and Teak Hennings will compete in middle-distance events while Jacki Van Oort will lend her speed to the sprint events. Coach Childress is hoping to see a couple of new faces bring a lift to the Cardinal team this season as upperclass-men. Senior Sarah Weaver will be competing in throwing events for the Cards and Junior 800-runner Hannah Lau is expected to score for the Cards. Sophomore sprinter Leah Meinders will also fill a key role in relay events. The Cardinals will be relying on youth to add depth to their squad this season. Childress is expecting significant contributions from freshmen sprinters Mara Anderson, Jayden Hughes, Sadie Oulman and Maddie Williams. Ra-chel Hejlik is also looking to score in the throwing events. With almost two months of preparation time ahead, Chil-

dress will be considering a number of potential events forpotential post-season emphasis. In addition to the shuttle hurdle relay, Coach Childress sees a possible state meet runfor the 4 x 400 meter relay or maybe the sprint medley event. With 32 girls working for spots in the lineup, GHV is ex-pected to be strong in the hurdle events, sprint races andthe middle distances. “We are a young team with a lot of talent,” remarked Childress. “We saw some good things at our indoor meet showing us that we’re headed in the right direction with our training. The girls have been working hard and we can’twait to begin track meets in April.” The Cardinals already have one team event under their belt after running at the Wartburg Indoor meet earlier thismonth. GHV will officially open the outdoor season onApril 4 at West Hancock.

BISON FOCUS ON STRENGTHS WITH SMALL SQUAD The North Iowa Bison will look for repeat trips to state in several events this track season, as they return five state qualifiers to anchor a small team. Back for the Bison are senior Alex Paulson, who competed at state last year in the shot put and the discus; junior Spen-cer Armstrong, who went to state in the 100 meters, 200 meters and as part of the 4x100 team; senior Logan Eichen-berger and junior Austin Haisman, who both competed in the 4x100 and 1600m medley at state; and junior Sam Has-sebroek, who was part of the 1600m medley. Others returning for the Bison include senior Kam-eron Rohwedder (distance), junior Noah Paulson (throws,

sprints), and sophomores Nathan Beenken (mid-distance) and Jacob Koppen (sprints, hurdles). Three newcomers join this year’s team, including fresh-men Jackson Berte (distance), Steven Rodriguez (sprints, jumps) and Isaiah Walk (sprints, jumps). Coach Jonathan Potter returns for his 18th season with the Bison, who placed second last year at Districts. He is joined by assistant coaches Nate Hemiller, Graig Eichenberger and Courtney Kennedy. Potter says the Bison’s strongest events this season look to be the throws and the sprints, and he expects good perfor-mances from Alex Paulson and Spencer Armstrong. He says

a lack of numbers will make it difficult to be competitive asa team, as they will be unable to fill out much of the eventschedule. “We will be very strong in some events and thenfound lacking due to numbers,” said Potter. Potter says it will be very important for the team to stayhealthy this season. “We have no room for an individual togo down because of our lack of depth,” said Coach Potter. He says the Bison aim to finish in the top half of the confer-ence, and Osage and Forest City will provide some of thetoughest competition in the Top of Iowa Conference.

EXPERIENCED GROUP RETURNS FOR LADY BISON The North Iowa Lady Bison have a strong group of ex-perienced athletes returning for the 2016 track and field season, including four state qualifiers. Returning state qualifiers are: sophomore Rachel Schut-ter in the 800 meters and 4x800, senior Lucy Hughes in the shot put, and junior Kendall Melz and senior Brooke Hovland in the 4x800. The returning lineup also includes: seniors Ashley Bau-mann (sprints), Megan Davis (mid-distance), Tiarra Jen-svold (sprints, jumps), Sydney Main (sprints, hurdles), Christa Miller (distance) and Samantha Sevley (mid-dis-tance). Returning juniors are: Rachel Hassebroek (sprints, hurdles), Mariah Richter (sprints, hurdles) and Cassidy Sachs (throws). Sophomores back this year include: Kenzie Bengtson (mid-distance, throws) and Rebekah Jensvold (sprints). “We have a strong core of veterans returning this season that have a lot of experience in the program,” said Head Coach Jonathan Potter, who returns for his 18th season.

“Developing the younger runners and staying healthy are important components to being competitive as the season progresses.” New to the team this season are: junior Jessica Govern (throws, sprints); sophomores McKenna Knight (mid-

distance), Naddie Myer (distance) and Krista Schutter (hurdles); and freshmen Katelin Adams (mid-distance), Lashaya Barclay (sprints, hurdles), Faith Finer (distance) and Jenna Govern (throws). Coach Potter says the team’s strengths look to be the throws, including both the shot put and the discus, and the middle and distance events. He says they are untested in the sprint events, and they will need to develop a high jumper. “We should come out of field events with a strong base of points,” said Potter. “Our lack of depth in the sprints will limit our top end for scoring points, but overall, we should be competitive meet in and meet out.” Potter says finishing in the top half of the conference is always their goal going into the season, with Forest City and Osage being the teams to beat at the conference meet. Assistant coaches for North Iowa include Nate Hemiller, Graig Eichenberger and Courtney Kennedy.

SIX STATE QUALIFIERS RETURN TO SHOOT FOR NORTH IOWA North Iowa returns a core group of committed athletes for the fourth season of trap shooting at the school. Six members of this year’s team competed at the state trap shooting meet last season, including: senior Samantha Sev-ley; juniors Noah Melz, Nick Price and Danica Voortmann; and sophomores Thomas Blodgett and Jordan Ostrander. Others returning for North Iowa include junior Allison Almelien and sophomores Isaac Paul and Reece Larson. Join-

ing the squad for their first season are freshmen Kevin Has-sebroek and Nick Sabin. Keith Frerichs returns as head coach for North Iowa, and he is assisted by Wade Briggs, Eric Knudson and Bill Rolling. Frerichs says his team has athletes who have been with the program for several years, and they have shown a commit-ment to the sport and have been improving each year. “What I like about this team is everyone helps and encourages each

other,” said Frerichs. Right now, Frerichs says his top shooters in no particular order include Isaac Paul, Nick Price, Noah Melz and ThomasBlodgett, but he says that could change as the season pro-gresses. Frerichs says he thinks North Iowa can place in the top three among local teams. “If our team can keep focused and make every practice count, we will do fine,” said Frerichs.

CARDINAL BOYS SEEK SOCCER SUCCESS Soccer at GHV may still be regarded as a relatively new sport by many local sports fans but with the Cardinals entering their sixth season of competition the players and coaches are feeling like veterans. The Cards have consistently shown improvement with each season and GHV coach Eric Williams is hoping for more growth this year. After going 0 – 12 in their first year of play followed by a 1 – 7 mark in season two, the Cardinals have been steadily adding to the win column each season. GHV finished at 5 – 10 overall in 2015 and with 11 talented returning letter winners on the roster Williams is optimistic that the number of wins will continue to grow this year. The Cards picked up a post-season victory last year, advancing to the second round of sub state play, and the squad is confident in their ability to move even deeper into tournament play this season.

Four seniors will lend their leadership to the Cardinals this season. Midfielders Dalton Basinger and Turner Albertson along with forward Patrick Terhark and defenseman Colton Raw are hoping for success in their final season on the turf. The Cardinal roster boasts several underclassmen letter win-ners, including junior defenseman Brandon Feuring and soph-omores Dane Whipple, Jonah Albertson, Colton Schroeder, Connor Burke, Ryan Meyers and Nick Joynt. Albertson, Mey-ers and Schroeder are midfielders while Whipple and Joynt are defensemen. Burke is a forward. Coach Williams is also anxious for the return of goalie Aiden McRobey. Aiden missed last year due to illness but appears to be back at full strength and ready to step up and play hard. Wil-liams will also consider using the services of a handful of fresh-men newcomers.

“Entering into the season we have high hopes. We have re-turning seniors showing great leadership and a large group ofunderclassman who are eager to learn and are hard working.Put these together and we have a recipe for not only matchwins, but an overall excitement for: Boys to become men, play-ers to become athletes, and individual players to become mind-ful of sacrifice for the team. As a coach I feel that every athletethat commits to the daily training and discipline of practicewill highly contribute to the team. Each and every individual isvery important to the success of the team. This season is look-ing great and we encourage all of you to come out and supportthe GHV Cardinals. It’s going to be a great season.” The Cards will open their season against one of North Iowa’stoughest teams as GHV will host Mason City on April 1.

GROWTH CONTINUES FOR GHV SOCCER When girls’ soccer became an of-ficial sport at Garner-Hayfield in 2012, there were probably some doubts if the program could be-come a competitive venture for ath-letes and fans alike. The Cardinals lost all eight matches that year, but the program has evolved with each passing season. GHV won two of 11 matches in 2013 and then surged to 5 – 10 the following year. Last sea-son the Cardinals reached the .500 mark, finishing the year at 8 – 8 and head coach Josh Banse is optimistic

that his team will continue to grow. Banse has a wealth of experienced players to consider when building his lineups this season. The Cardi-nals have 13 letter winners on the roster along with several younger players who will all be battling for playing time. With a total of 42 girls involved in the program, Coach Banse will have his hands full evalu-ating each player while looking for the right combination of girls to put on the field. Five seniors will offer their lead-

ership to the team. Midfielders Autumn Weaver, Payton Bamrick, Hannah Sokol and Katie Rasmuson along with defender Sydney Chil-dress are expecting good things in their final season. Junior defenders Brooklyn Laird and Carlie Knutson with midfielder Hannah Lau add depth to the roster. The Cardinals will also rely on some underclass-men as midfielders Jacki Van Oort and Abby Kale, forwards Em-ily Howke and Alaina Scott and de-fender Rachel Sokol all gained valu-

able experience a year ago. Coach Banse is excited about the squad’s athleticism and speed but realizes that with almost half of his returning letter winner list being sophomores GHV will be fielding a relatively young squad. Regard-less, Banse feels his squad consists of great depth that will allow GHV to compete with most of the local teams. This year’s schedule has also been expanded, translating to more game time for all girls. ‘Last year was a great year for this program,” remarked Banse. “We are taking the steps to becoming a more consistent competitor in the area. We graduated a lot of experi-enced seniors that will be missed for sure, but the girls that will take over are very capable of making us a stronger program. The five seniors all have a ton of time on the varsity

squad in past years. Juniors Lau and Knutson saw minimal time last year due to injuries and it will be great to have them back. Laird is coming off of a break out season last year and will lead our defense. Our sopho-more class is full of talent and they will help out on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, Rachel Sokol should be a solid defender this year while Morgan Westendorf has big shoes to fill at goalie. We have a total of 15 sophomores out this year and all of them have great potential. I’m also expecting freshmen Bretta Car-olus, Megan Eastman and Payton Echelberger to push for some varsity time as well. I am excited with get-ting this team ready to go, it should be a blast!” The Cardinals will open their 2016 campaign at home on April 4 against CAL.

NORTH IOWA GOLFERS LOOK TO IMPROVE WITH SMALL NUMBERS

The North Iowa golf teams will focus on individual improvement this season, as both the boys and girls will have small squads with just three members each. All three of the girls’ golfers competed last year, including senior Ivey Greensky and ju-niors Dani Yegge and Sydney Giesking. Gie-sking placed in the top 10 at the conference meet last season. The boys have two returning golfers: se-

nior Cam Hepperly and sophomore Jordan Boekelman. They are joined this year by

freshman Logan Leesch. The North Iowa teams will be led this year

by Head Coach Matt Harriman, who joinsthe program for his first season as coach. While North Iowa won’t be able to be com-petitive in the team standings with theirsmall numbers, Harriman says the golferswill be working to improve each day. “I have some kids that really want to im-prove their golf games, so the desire to bebetter will be a strength,” said Coach Harri-man.

GHV BOYS FIELD EXPERIENCED GOLF SQUAD Conference realignment will send the GHV boys’ golf team to a few different courses to face some unfamiliar teams this season. The Cardinals have faced essentially the same NIC teams for the previous four decades, and many of those teams remain on this year’s sched-ule but a few newcomers on differ-ent courses will add some variety to the calendar. GHV coach Ken Krause is optimistic that his group of experienced players will compete for some of the top spots in the new Top of Iowa Conference.

Krause has plenty of players to consider when assembling his line-up as a total of 21 young men are competing for playing time. With five returning letter winners on the roster, the Cardinals should be able to field a competitive team early in the season. Coach Krause is expect-ing the team to build on last season’s accomplishments that included a team title at the West Hancock tournament and a third place finish at the conference tournament. Two Cardinals will lend their lead-ership to the squad after earning all-

conference honors in 2015. Junior Grady Umbarger along with sopho-more Matthew Heinemenn both brought home individual hardware from the NIC tournament last year. Joining those two are three senior letter winners who saw consider-able action in 2015. Jordan Bab-cock, Alex Goll and Jake Folkerts are working to keep their spots on the roster as they work to improve in preseason drills. Working to break into the Cardinal lineup are senors Todd Finley and Brandon Bell along with sophomores Tyler Kumsher and Tyler Obermann. Coach Krause is pleased to work with his group of players that bring solid experience and a general love of the game to each practice. “We should be a strong meet squad with strong individuals,” noted Krause. “Grady should be one of the better players in the area. Both Matthew and Jordan have improved greatly and have enough experience to become consis-tent players.” The NIC was always a very competitive league with teams such as Forest City and Lake Mills al-ways providing a very strong chal-

lenge. Those teams are expected to continue fielding strong teams and the addition of Bishop Garrigan to the league will provide an even larger challenge for the Cardinals. Garrigan has established a very strong program over the years and

Coach Krause looks for them to be the team to beat in the TIC. The Cardinals will open their sea-son on their home course, hosting Clarion-Goldfield on April 4.

GHV GIRLS RELOAD GOLF SQUAD After winning the North Iowa Conference’s final three golf titles, the GHV girls will look to con-tinue winning in their new league, the Top of Iowa Conference. To do so the Cardinals will need to re-place two consistent scorers from

last year’s squad but coach Todd Greiman believes his girls can rise to the challenge. The Cardinals have evolved into one of North Iowa’s top programs over the past three seasons. A year ago GHV set the record for most victories by a Cardinal squad

after finishing the season at 29 – 9. In addition to winning last year’s conference tournament the Cards advanced to the regional fi-nals with a runner-up finish at the Class 3A Sectional Tournament.

Leading the Cardinal squad this season is sophomore Bailee Frayne. Frayne completed an im-pressive freshman season that in-cluded the individual medal at the NIC tournament and an appear-ance at the Class 3A State Tourna-ment. Bailee placed 13th overall in the two-day event and has hopes of returning to the tourney this year and moving up in the stand-ings. Joining Frayne on the squad is threetime letter winner Kyleigh Slaichert. The Cardinal senior has been a consistent scorer for the Cards since her freshman season and has been a first team all- con-ference performer each year. She is looking for a strong finish as she completes her career. Also letter-ing last year were juniors Rachel

Enright, Paige Penning and Kay-la Leerar. Greiman will need to find one more player to step into the varsity lineup. Top prospects at this time appear to be juniors Cassie Eichmann and Kat Groom but newcomers Cassie Davis and Makayla Madsen will be working on their games in hopes of finding a spot on the varsity roster. “We have a very solid nucleus returning and I’m optimistic that our three top players will score well enough to help us win many meets,” noted Greiman. “Bailee and Kyleigh were both very con-sistent players last season and I know that Rachel and Kayla both spent a lot of time working on their games last summer. If the girls can steadily improve as the season progresses I think we could

be fairly competitive when tour-nament time rolls around in May.” The Cardinals will open their

season on April 4 against a strong Clarion- Goldfield squad at the Clarmond Golf Course.

GROWING EAGLE GOLF PROGRAM

The West Hancock golf program is increasing their numbers for the second straight season. Two years ago, one girl and six boys made up the West Hancock rosters. This year they are kicking off their season with 13 girls and 15 boys. “We are in our third year of a rebuilding process,” said Coach Troy Hobscheidt. “We have increased the interest in the sport by continuing to grow. We hope to compete in duals and the post season this year.” Last year, the boys’ team finished strong, placing fourth at Sectionals and missing Regionals by just 10 strokes. Colton Ruter, who returns for his senior sea-son, missed Regionals by one stroke his junior sea-son. West Hancock welcomes nine returning letterwin-ners to the 2016 season; seniors Colton Ruter, Alex Hartwig, Levi Eden, Brice Kudej and junior Seth Weiland for the boys, seniors Alyssa Klepoch and juniors Alexis Klepoch, April Robbins, and Cassie Engstler. Other Eagles on the varsity roster include; seniors Connor Sonius, Chase Stokka, Trinity Thompson and Dakota Peterson, juniors Chandler Schuver, Garrett Fosdick, Trey Hobscheidt, Nick Lemmon and Jonathan Hernandez for the boys, junior Andi Robbins, sophomore Bailee Leerar and freshman Rylee Horstman for the girls. The Eagles will be coached by Troy Hobscheidt (boys) and Melinda Tremmel (girls). Both teams are slotted to open their respective seasons in Belmond against Belmond-Klemme and Lake Mills on Friday, April 8th. Both Conference meets are scheduled for Monday, May 9th, with the boys playing at Spring Valley Golf Course and the girls Belmond Country Club.
