CHRYSOSTOM— Borrowed from Ancient Greek (Khrusóstomos, literally “golden-mouthed”), the epithet of St. John CHRYSOSTOM, given to him for his celebrated eloquence. St. John CHRYSOSTOM (345–407 A.D.) was an articulate orator in Antioch and Constantinople, and one of the Fathers of the Church, whose writings have been translated into many languages. The Orthodox Church counts him among the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with Saints Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian. His straightforward understanding of the Scriptures (in contrast to the Alexandrian tendency towards allegorical interpretation) meant that the themes of his sermons and commentaries were extremely social, explaining the Christian’s conduct in life. CHRYSOSTOM’s existing homiletical works are vast, including many hundreds of exegetical homilies on both the New Testament (especially the works of Saint Paul) and the Old Testament (particularly on Genesis); he also commented on the Psalms, the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of John, and the Acts of the Apostles. In his various books, St. John CHRYSOSTOM emphasized charitable giving and was concerned with the spiritual and temporal needs of the poor. Echoing themes found in the Gospel of Matthew, he calls upon the rich to lay aside materialism in favour of helping the poor. Along these lines, he often wrote about the need for almsgiving and its importance alongside fasting and prayer: ”Prayer without almsgiving is unfruitful.” Orthodox Christians throughout the world participate in St. John’s Divine Liturgy nearly every week and hear his famous Paschal Homily at every Pascha. Message from Father Joseph Purpura

and Alan Rossy

UPDATE ON OUR RENOVATION, EXPANSION, CONSTRUCTION WORK AND CHURCH LIGHTING

Construction is well underway with our new Youth Centre which will house the Sunday School, Teens, Young Adults, social spaces and church office. The 2nd floor of the Youth Centre will be an open area with moveable furniture space and walls thus allowing for a variety of events. The garage space will be replaced by expanding the building of the Youth Center on all floors. Comfortable areas will be designed to be conducive to gatherings and dialogue. We want to attract and engage our young Parishioners of St. George. The church kitchen will be completely renewed. An elevator will be added with access from the parking lot and will service all floors. The lighting in the church has been completely retrofitted and is 96% complete. All fixtures have been cleaned, wiring replaced, and new fixtures added to highlight the Icons, and Altar. We have changed all lights to LED which allows us to save energy and create better lighting scenes for various services such as Lent, funerals, Orthros and Liturgies. Construction continues on the exterior of the church as we repair, replace and solidify the building. This is a lengthy process to restore the building to its original state and appearance. We look forward to seeing you in church. Please remember to reserve your seating for Liturgies either online or by calling the church. May God bless you and your families.

THE EPISTLE (For St. Philip the Apostle )

His voice has gone out into all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God.

The Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (4:9-16)

Brethren, God has revealed us, the apostles, last of all, as those appointed to death;

for we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools

for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are

glorified, but we are dishonored. Even to this present hour we both hunger and thirst;

we are naked, and are buffeted, and are restless; and we labor, working with our own

hands. While reviled, we bless; while persecuted, we endure; while blasphemed, we

exhort; we have become the filth of the world and the off-scouring of all things, even

until now. I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as

my beloved children; for though you have a myriad of tutors in Christ, yet you do not

have many fathers; for I begat you in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I beseech you,

therefore, be imitators of me.

THE GOSPEL (For the Eighth Sunday of Luke)

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:25-37)

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I

do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you

read?” And the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your

heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and

your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to him, “You have answered right; do this,

and you will live.” But the lawyer, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is

my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and

he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half

dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he

passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and

saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to

where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound

up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought

him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and

gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend,

I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved

neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” The lawyer said, “The one who

showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Or, un prêtre

THE SYNAXARION On November 14 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate the holy, glorious, and all-laudable Apostle Philip, one of the foremost choir of the Twelve.

Verses By his feet is Philip on a post suspended, repaying Thee for washing his feet, O Savior.

On the fourteenth, O Philip, thou wast hanged upside down. Philip was born in Bethsaida beside the Sea of Galilee, as were Peter and Andrew. Instructed in Holy Scripture from his youth, Philip immediately responded to the call of the Lord Jesus and followed Him (John 1:43). After the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, Philip zealously preached the Gospel throughout many regions in Asia and Greece. Many miracles were manifested through Philip, especially the healing of the sick, by which many pagans believed in Christ. In the Phrygian town of Hierapolis, Philip found himself in common evangelical work with his sister Mariamna, John the Theologian, and the Apostle Bartholomew. The wicked pagans seized Philip and crucified him upside-down on a tree, and then crucified Bartholomew as well. At that, the earth opened up and swallowed the judge and many other pagans with him. In great fear, the people rushed to rescue the crucified apostles, but only Bartholomew was still alive; Philip had already breathed his last. This wonderful apostle suffered in the year 86 in the time of Emperor Dometian. On this day, we also commemorate Gregory Palamas, archbishop of Thessalonica; New-martyr Constantine of Hydra; Justinian the emperor and his wife Theodora. By the intercessions of Thy Saints, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

CHURCH ETIQUETTE

In some Orthodox traditions there are times when kneeling is a

pious practice in the Liturgy, the most notable being at the

Consecration of the Holy Gifts. However, kneeling is prohibited on

all days during the Paschal season, from Pascha to Pentecost,

and on Sundays in honor of the Resurrection, except for the

Sundays of the Cross (September 14th and the third Sunday of

Great Lent) and at the Pentecost Sunday Vespers.

Kneeling

The Holy Orthodox Church is perhaps one of the last social institutions

where dignity, protocol, respect, and reverence are maintained. This is

primarily because when we come to the church and its services, we are

entering the Kingdom of God on earth, His habitation, and we choose to

honour this sacred place by our attentiveness to what is proper and ordered.

We have the opportunity to reflect the image of Christ within us by our

actions. “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation” (1

Peter 2:9).

Glorify Him! 2) Le Christ est né! Glorifions-Le! 3) Al Massih woleda! Fa majjedouh!

Paul Jabara

Dear Brothers and Sister in Christ,

I am writing to you to share some exciting news!

The Saint George Legacy is once again sponsoring a Nativity/Christmas

video and WE WANT YOU!

Even though the pandemic is better controlled, we nevertheless are not yet

ready to resume choir concerts and parish activities. The video we are

planning will include the St. George Choir, the Youth Byzantine Choir, our

chanter, George Fattouh, Father Joseph, and hopefully, YOU!

We are asking you to put up your Christmas decorations, put on your Sunday

best, and holding your camera phone in a horizontal

position, record the following:

1) The Nativity Greeting in your choice of language,

examples such as, but not limited to:

1) Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

2) Le Christ est né! Glorifions-Le!

3) Al Massih woleda! Fa majjedouh!

2) A brief Christmas message with your family around the Christmas

tree (3-5 seconds) such as:

a) Merry Christmas! From our home to yours!

b) Wishing everyone peace, health, and love!

c) May the joy of the nativity of Christ shine upon you, your

family, and friends

d) A greeting of your choice.

The more videos we receive, the more fun and memorable the video will be.

Everyone especially loves to see babies and children! So, get into the

Christmas spirit and help make this video one that we will never forget!

The deadline for submissions is November 24.

Please e-mail your video clips to [email protected] and

[email protected].

In Christ,

Paul Jabara
