1st Reading: Ecclesiasticus 35.12-19: True prayer is made with the whole heart and with humility. The “widow and orphan” are examples of those whose prayer is heard by God, since they have no-one else on whom to rely. Response to the Psalm: This poor man called; the Lord heard him. 2nd Reading: II Timothy 4.6-18: This is the text which gives us those phrases which have entered our language—”fighting the good fight of faith,” “running the race to the finish.” Perseverance in faith is rewarded with the crown of glory.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Luke 18.9-14: Luke continues his reflection on the Lord’s teaching on prayer as he records the parable of the Pharisee and publican. Both are religious people, but the contrast shows how religion can lead either to real self-knowledge or to self-delusion and priggishness. SUNDAY TAKEAWAY: Be attentive. Be attentive. Be attentive. When we pray frequently and know that God is in us here and now, we are very attentive to others because we are less preoccupied with ourselves. We are less worried about ourselves and if we are not worried about ourselves we see other people more clearly. We see their struggle. We see their beauty. We see their kindness. We see that they are not trying to hurt us but that they have their own problems. We are much gentler, because we are in the presence of the Spirit. We realise these people are also struggling. This is one of the great-est and first rewards of following Jesus. Suddenly, the Spirit in you sees the Spirit in them. The Christ in you sees the Christ in them. The heart of God in you sees the heart of God in them. Spirit speaks to Spirit, heart to heart, and Christ speaks to Christ. Fr Henri Nouwen

Please pray for our sick and housebound. Lord our God. For you have called us to serve you and one another in love. Bless our sick and housebound today so that they may bear their illness in union with Jesus' sufferings and restore them quickly to health. Bless those who have grown old in your service and give them courage and strength in their faith. Lead us all to eternal glory. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
