Annual Report 2010ASRY 7

Welcome to ASrY’s Annual review of 2010!

The Year 2010 continued to be a challenging year for the global economy and for the global shipping industry, though definite trends of recovery were witnessed in the second half of the year. For ASRY, too, the first half was an extremely difficult period with business volumes declining. However, the second half recorded a significant improvement in performance and financial results and, overall, ASRY repaired a record number of vessels during the year. I’m cautiously optimistic for ASRY, though I do realize that we will not see the excellent market conditions of 2008 return any time soon.

Looking forward, 2011 is a pivotal year for the shipyard as regards its future. We are entering our 35th year of operation and nearing the successful completion of our US$ 188 million facility expansion programme, which will make us even more competitive in a fast changing market. Understandably, during the last two years, many shipping companies have deferred major repairs, or even laid-up parts of their fleets, and this did have an adverse impact on ASRY’s business volume. However, as global trade gathers momentum, I’m optimistic that the situation will change and the pace of recovery in the shipping industry will improve before long and with that the fortunes of ASRY will also rise significantly.

At ASRY we are well known for offering high quality of service, at a fair price, to all of our customers. However, we also recognise that we face increased competition from new shipyards in the region. As one of the world’s leading and well respected shiprepairers, ASRY is willing and able to take this new competition head on. I see competition as a good thing as it will motivate ASRY to equip itself better to provide further improved services and greater value for money to its customers.

Once the shipping industry picks up and gathers momentum, we will be able to push forward with new plans and ventures, both at home and internationally, but only when the time is right. More revenue and more profit for ASRY will mean that we can reinvest in the company to implement even more ambitious projects in the future to improve productivity and further enhance the range and quality of services to our customers.

As I mentioned earlier, ASRY is keen to expand its operations and reach high standards of excellence and we are achieving a remarkable and sustainable progress despite the challenges which the Company faces in the market. This could not have been achieved without the continuous support and encouragement of the shareholding countries I would, therefore, like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all our shareholders, especially the Government of the Kingdom Bahrain, for their excellent and continued support.

I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to my colleagues on the Board of ASRY for their continued commitment and support to the company. I would also like to thank ASRY’s entire workforce, including the management, staff and workers for their dedication, hard work and support without which ASRY would not have achieved satisfactory results in the difficult market conditions. My sincere thanks are also due to ASRY’s sub-contractor partners and of course our hard working and highly capable global network of agents, for all their valuable support and co-operation during the year.

With that note, I thank you all once again for all your support and co-operation.

Daij bin Salman Al KhalifaChairman

Annual Report 2010ASRY 00

Following on from the globally disastrous year of 2009, 2010 was somewhat kinder for ASRY and we even repaired a record number of vessels, 210 to be exact. Despite this the continued global recession which seriously affected the shipping industry meant that many ship owners focused on essential repairs only and although the yard’s financial performance was down, we were able to close the year out in a stronger position than originally predicted.

For the second year running ASRY managed to hold its own in a very difficult and demanding market and once again this is down to you all - our customers, agents and, not the least, our management, workers and numerous contractors. When will the market pick up? I believe that it will take time and I don’t expect to see any clear indications of a return to normality until at least mid 2011. However, what I do know is that with our major facility expansion programme seeing the entering into service of the yard’s new 1.38km repair quay wall at the end of 2011, when the market does return ASRY will be in prime position to take on more business and to provide the best possible support to our customers.

The 210 vessels repaired by the yard in 2010, although a record, did not generate a corresponding revenue with ship owners still being affected by the global recession, many

owners carried out the minimal scope of repairs during the year, consequently the value of the average repair job at ASRY in 2010 was down on 2009. A major contributor to ASRY’s performance during the year under review was the increasingly strong performance from the yards offshore division, ASRY Offshore Services (AOS). Many thanks for your contribution.

The two largest repair jobs completed by the yard in 2010 involved vessels from owners in India and Germany. The Indian owned 154,971dwt tanker Pratibha Bheema arrived in the yard in the early part of the year and eventually left the yard in December after 2,600 tonnes of steel was replaced in the vessel! This is by far the largest steel repair job handled by ASRY since it started operations in 1977.

The second largest job was the repairs to the German owned containership Maersk Miami. The split between customers from the Arab market and the International market was significant, with 99 vessels repairing from the regional market, with a sales volume of 37.57%, and a further 111 vessels from the International market, with a sales volume of 62.43%.

Vessels repairing from Kuwait were down compared with the previous year; just five ships, while owners based in Bahrain provided 40 vessels for repair. Once again owners from the

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provided valued repeat business with 26 vessels. 2010 also saw ASRY welcome two new customers from the Arabian Gulf region, both from the Emirate of Sharjah: FAL Shipping and Warm Seas Development.

As regards the international market, two agents produced exceptional results. A highly active agent during 2010 was our man in Norway, Rudi Beil and his ECA Shiprepair team. The year under review saw a significant number of Norwegian owned vessels repair at the yard, many were repeat customers Odfjell and Nordic Maritime Services having a high level of vessels in the yard throughout the year. It was also nice to welcome back an old customer of ours, Hoegh LNG Fleet Management, with the veteran LNG carrier Norman Lady, which underwent life extension work for a charter in South America.

Secondly, our American agent Vogler Marine Agencies also put in a sound performance. The largest single customer from North America was Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co, with 10 vessels repaired during the year, including a first for the yard, the conversion of the cutter/suction dredger Ohio. Meanwhile, offshore jack-up rig operator Pride International repaired six rigs at ASRY during the year, including the major refurbishment of the jack-up Pride North Dakota, while Crowley Technical Management brought in five large Pure Car Truck Carriers

(PCTCs) for drydocking and repair. Thank you all for your continued support and a big thank you to our agent in North America, Vogler Marine Agencies.

Staying with our worldwide network of agents, it was reportedly earlier in the year of the death of our well known Swedish agent Jonas Svedberg after a long illness. Jonas was very well known by the world’s shipowning and shiprepair community, Jonas worked for our ASRYMAR office in London since the yard started business in 1977. He will be sadly missed.

It was good to see our naval repair sector grow. During 2010 we carried out a demanding repair contract for the US Navy on four coastal patrol vessels, continued our co-operation agreement with the UK’s A&P Group on the repair and maintenance of the two Royal Fleet Auxiliary Bay-class vessels based in Bahrain and welcomed two vessels from the Royal Navy to the yard, the Sandown-class mine counter measures vessel HMS Pembroke and the Echo-class hydrographic/oceanographic survey vessel HMS Enterprise. I’m confident that this business area will continue to grow for the shipyard.

ASRY is committed to building and expanding relationships with our customers, both existing and new. To this end during

the year we have participated in a number of key exhibitons in Europe and the Arabian Gulf; Posidonia in Greece, SMM in Hamburg and Seatrade in Dubai as well as Offshore Middle East in Qatar. ASRY achieved excellent exposure through corporate and award level sponsorship of 3 high profile maritime industry events; Lloyds List Global and Middle East Awards in London and Dubai respectively and Seatrade Middle East & Indian Sub-continent Awards in Dubai.

I’m delighted to report that ASRY’s corporate social responsibility activities were recognised by the global shipping industry during 2010, not once but twice! ASRY received awards for its corporate social responsibility at the Lloyd’s List Global Awards in London and then a month later at the Seatrade Middle East & Indian Sub-Continent Awards in Dubai.

This marketing activity will continue as we strive to increase the number of Fleet Repair Agreements which we see as offering the best value to our customers in terms of drydock availability, prices and on time repairs.

ASRY maintained its commitment to the community with support to charitable organizations caring for children, orphans and disadvantaged groups and contributed the 2nd

BD 100,000 installment of ASRY’s BD 500,000 commitment to the Crown Prince International Scholarship Programme. ASRY also participated strongly in the local sporting scene where its teams were successful in winning 1st place in football and handball competitions.

During 2010 we added three new owners with Fleet Agreements for the repair of their vessels at ASRY. I’d like to welcome you to this growing club: Maridive & Oil Services from Egypt, Bourbon Offshore from France and FAL Shipping from Sharjah. Thank you for your support.

ASRY faces another tough year ahead, but I’m confident, along with our Chairman, Shaikh Daij, that we will ride out the storm and come out far stronger and capable to meet the new demands of the shipping and offshore industry in the years ahead. Our main strengths continue to be facilities and a workforce that has been developed over many years, an active global network of agents, strong management of quality and safety systems, a customer oriented approach of building partnerships and demonstrating fairness in how they are treated.

2011 will be a pivotal year for ASRY and its future. The end of the year will see the entering into service of our new 1.38km

repair quay wall, a much needed new facility that will enable the yard to handle a lot more alongside work, while at the same time making ASRY more attractive to customers wishing to repair in the Arabian Gulf region, a region that is seeing the arrival of two new shipyards. These new yards will provide competition for us, but lets not forget that ASRY is about to enter its 35th year of continued service to the world’s fleet, we have the skills, the track record and a globally respected reputation, you don’t get that overnight!

Once again, thank you all for helping make 2010 an acceptable year for the yard, considering the very heavy pressures that we have all had to work with.

Annual Report 2010ASRY 00

ASRY is now in its fourth decade of operation. Since starting life as a super tanker repairer, the yard has now developed into a truly versatile shiprepair and maintenance provider for all types of ships, both commercial and naval, as well as specialist craft from the offshore oil and gas markets.

Track RecordASRY’s record in providing ship owners worldwide with a consistent and high quality service was recognised in 1995 when the yard received DNV’s certification to ISO Standard 9002:1994. Furthermore, in October 2001 the yard became the first major shiprepair facility to achieve DNV certification to the new ISO Standard 9001:2000 and in May 2003 the yard achieved certification of EMS ISO 14001 on the environment and in November 2004 the QHSAS 18001 certification on occupational health and safety.

Meanwhile, December 2010 saw ASRY become the first shiprepair yard in the Middle East to be accredited with the two security-based ISO 28000 and ISO 20858 certifications, which cover security management systems for supply chains and maritime port facility security assessment and security plan development respectively.

Customer CareFrom the start ASRY’s policy has been to create a spirit of mutual trust and regard when discussing specifications, tenders and invoices with its customers, so that difficult issues can be solved amicably. The number of repeat customers at the yard is testament to this approach. However, ASRY is constantly looking for ways to enhance services and cater to the industry’s future needs. As part of the shipyard’s customer care initiative, a suite of modern offices are provided for Owner’s Representatives, providing the latest communications and office services.

A dedicated Seafarers’ Centre is also available at the yard, providing ship’s crews with games, TV, video, refreshments and telephone facilities.

Focus on Safety‘Safety First’ is the bold message written in huge capital letters across the dock head of the 500,000dwt graving dock, providing a visible statement of ASRY’s comprehensive safe operating procedure. A safety meeting is held onboard each vessel during its first day in the yard. ASRY is also able to accept vessels inerted.

REPAIR FACILITIES

Dry DockASRY’s No.1 dock is 500,000dwt capacity graving dock with a length overall of 375m and an overall width of 75m, and is capable of handling multiple dockings. Ships with draughts up to 8.5m can cross the sill – set at 9m below chart datum – and vessels with draughts as deep as 10.4m can enter in certain tidal conditions.

Floating DocksThe shipyard has two floating docks, both of which underwent Life Extension work in 2009. Dock No. 2 has a length overall of 252m and a clear width of 44m. With a lifting capacity of 33,000 tonnes this dock can accommodate vessels up to 120,000dwt. Dock No. 3 has an overall length of 227m and a clear width of 40m. With a lifting capacity of 30,000 tonnes this floating dock is ideal for vessels up to 80,000dwt.

SlipwaysASRY’s twin slipways, each with a dry berth length of 255m, are ideal for accommodating offshore service boats, tugs, supply vessels and general cargo ships up to

5,000 tonnes displacement (corresponding to 15,000dwt). Vessels with a draught up to 4.5m can be slipped under normal tidal conditions. Adjacent to the slipways is a 100m berth for alongside repairs.

CraneageThe yard’s large graving dock is equipped with one 100 tonne capacity crane and one 15 tonne capacity crane, both with a maximum outreach of 65m. The two finger jetties are covered by three 15 tonne cranes, while the two floating docks each have three cranes of 12 tonnes capacity. The two slipways are serviced by two 80 tonne crawler cranes. ASRY also has a large floating crane capable of lifting 200 tonne at 50m above water level.

Repair Jetties & BerthsASRY offers 11 repair berths with a total berthing length of around 2,600m. A new 1,380m repair quay, with an alongside water depth of 12m, is currently under construction and expected to be in service by the end of 2011.

Annual Report 2010 ASRY00 Annual Report 2010 ASRY32

Management Report

Following the globally disastrous year of 2009, 2010 turned out better than expected at ASRY with the yard repairing a record number of ships and rigs, 210 compared with 168 the previous year and recording total sales of US $149.57m, compared with $131.4m in 2009. Increasingly strong performance from ASRY’s offshore division (AOS) significantly helped figures in the year under review.

2010 began well for ASRY, but the summer months saw a drop in business and revenue, with the last two months of the year seeing business pick up well. For a second year running ship owners only carried out the minimum of repairs necessary, although the spend by offshore rig operators increased. The value of the average repair job was slightly down on the 2009.

Repair highlights of the year under review, in terms of sales value, included repairs to the German owned containership Maersk Miami, the large-scale steel renewal aboard the Indian-owned tanker Pratibha Bheema (the largest ever steel repair undertaken at ASRY), major hull renewal work on the four US Navy’s Cyclone-class fast patrol vessels, and the conversion of the dredger Ohio for US operator Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co.

Showing a sign of the continued depressed shipping market, 2010 was notable for fewer than usual tankers repairing at the Bahrain yard. In the year under review, just seven vessels over 175,000dwt repaired at ASRY, including thee VLCCs from BW Shipping – the 279,999dwt BW Ural, the 299,325dwt BW Ulan and the 299,498dwt BW Utah. Other large vessels drydocked during the year included the Greek owned 299,700dwt tanker La Madrina, the Vela International owned 316,501dwt Leo Star and the KOTC owned 317,250dwt tanker Al Jabriyah II.

However, the largest vessel to repair at ASRY in 2010 was the UK-operated 441,585dwt tanker TI Oceania, which underwent alongside repairs.

Interestingly, repairs to vessels under 70,000dwt was up on the original figure budgeted for during the year – 133 vessels as opposed to 111.

Once again the split between customers from the Arab market and the International market was almost 50:50 with 99 vessels repairing from the regional market, with a sales volume of US $56.18m and a further 111 from the International sector, with a sales volume of US $93.39m.

Vessels repairing from Kuwait were down compared with the previous year, with five ships, while owners based in Bahrain had another strong year, providing 40 vessels. Meanwhile, another strong repeat market for ASRY over the years, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, repaired 26 vessels. The year under review also saw ASRY welcome two new customers from the Gulf region, Sharjah-based FAL Shipping and Warm Seas Development.

As regards the International market, owners from the US, brought to ASRY 29 vessels. The largest single customer from the US was Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co, with 10 vessels repaired during the year, including a first for the yard, the conversion of the Dust Pan Dredger Ohio into a Cutter/Suction Dredger. Meanwhile, offshore jack-up rig operator Pride International repaired six rigs at ASRY during the year, including the major refurbishment of its jack-up Pride North Dakota, while Crowley Technical Management brought in five large Pure Car Truck Carriers (PCTCs) for drydocking and repair.Norwegian vessels were once again well represented in ASRY during 2010, with 14 vessels. Once again chemical tanker operator Odfjell was a major customer during the year, along with Nordic Maritime Services, and it was nice to see Hoegh LNG Fleet Management return again with the veteran LNG carrier Norman Lady.

Page 34: a Picture of Partnerships - ASRY€¦ · Management Team 30 Management Report 32 Asry Offshore Services 36 Looking Forward 38 ISO 9001 : 2008 ISO 28000 / 20858 : 2010 ISO 14001 :

Annual Report 2010 ASRY00

The high level of repeat orders from reputable ship owners, managers and operators once again proved the confidence that customers place in ASRY’s capabilities in delivering high quality repairs, maintaining the yard’s position as a world leader in the global shiprepair industry. It was also good to see the yard’s activities in the naval repair sector continue to improve, with 2010 seeing, once again, a high level of work from the US Navy, the UK’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), as well as two visitors from the Royal Navy, the Sandown-class mine counter measures vessel HMS Pembroke and the Echo-class Survey Vessel Hydrographic Oceanographic HMS Enterprise.

The recent expansion of the offshore oil and gas markets in the Arabian Gulf has fully justified ASRY’s decision to establish a separate offshore division in the shape of ASRY Offshore Services (AOS) to cater for the yard’s offshore customers. 2010 saw an increase in the number of jack-ups repairing at ASRY compared with 2009, as well as an increase in the value per job.

Blasting & Painting Division2010 was another busy year for ASRY’s blasting and painting division, a specialist area of the shiprepair and maintenance market that the Bahrain yard is well known for, and a year in which more and more hydroblasting work on decks and tanks was undertaken.

All in all the year saw 5.3m sq m of blasting and painting completed on the hulls, tanks and decks of ships undergoing repair in the yard, slightly up on the previous year’s figure. Notable blasting and painting jobs completed during work on the Odfjell chemical tankers Bow Mekka, Bow Riyad, Bow Clipper and Bow Peace, and the Indian owned tanker Pratibha Bheema, while more and more jack-up rigs repairing at ASRY also meant more work for the blasting and painting departments; notable offshore work being undertaken on the rigs Kedarnath, from India, and Pride North Dakota, from the USA.

Despite the downturn in the average spend per ship on repairs; demand for steel repairs remained high with some 6,924 tonnes being replaced during shiprepair activities. Notable steel renewal jobs completed by ASRY during the year involved the Indian owned tanker Pratibha Bheema (2,600 tonnes by far the largest steel renewal undertaken so far at the yard), the US owned dredger Ohio (603 tonnes), the Kuwaiti livestock carrier Al Kuwait (582 tonnes) and the German owned containership Maersk Miami (317 tonnes).

Production DivisionASRY’s Production Division was the driving force behind the shipyard’s record breaking year in 2008 and continued its forward momentum through 2009 and 2010, raising itself to meet the challenges of increased productivity, strong

teamwork and above all, total participation of all workers, both full time ASRY staff and sub-contractors.

Highlights of the year for the Production Division included the following: major steel renewal to the Indian owned tanker Pratibha Bheema; conversion of the US owned dredger Ohio; repairs to the German owned containership Maersk Miami, life extension work on the world’s oldest LNG carrier, Norman Lady, which included a large amount of stainless steel renewal and overhaul of the vessel’s steam turbine propulsion plant; and the hull repairs to the four US Navy fast patrol vessels USS Firebolt, USS Chinook, USS Sirocco and USS Whirlwind.

Although the latter only involved around 30 tons of new steel per vessel, varying in thickness between 4-6mm, welding was a very slow process due to this.

The Production Division is also heavily involved in the construction of the yard’s four new shipyard tugs, the keels of which were laid at the end of 2010 and the first project monitoring meeting being held in mid-December.

Projects Realisation DivisionASRY’s on-going facilities expansion programme continues to keep the Projects Realisation Division busy, as highlighted elsewhere in this Annual Review.

Major events during 2010 included the completion of ASRY’s new main administration building, new offices for ASRY Offshore Services and its clients, the construction of new labour accommodation facilities for around 400 personnel, construction of a new stock yard equipped with a mobile plate shifter and the start of major renewal of No.1 Dock, including new bottom slabs and side walls. This project will take four years to complete.

The year under review also saw a BOT (Build, Operate & Transfer) contract awarded to India’s Gemsil for a new water desalination plant for the shipyard. This Reverse Osmosis Plant will be operated by Gemsil for 25 years, following its entering into service in November 2011. Savings in the order of US $800,000/year in the cost of water supply to the yard are expected to be achieved, based on current market prices.

Annual Report 2010ASRY 00

• Kedarnath – Great Offshore Ltd• Pride Hawaii – Pride International• SEP 350 – NPCC• Hercules 170 – Hercules Offshore• FD V – Foresight Drilling

Following on from its strong first year of operations in 2009, ASRY’s specialist offshore oil and gas division, ASRY Offshore Services (AOS), has gone from strength to strength in 2010, despite challenging market conditions.

The division is now set to diversify further, from just a repairer of jack-up rigs, into the areas of offshore fabrication (flare towers, jackets, legs etc.), repairing offshore support and construction vessels, the supply of skilled personnel for ‘In Field’ offshore work and becoming a facility provider for the offshore oil and gas market, offering the yard’s prime location, fully equipped workshops, secure storage and dedicated office accommodation. Formed in September 2008, AOS handles the increasing demand for offshore oil and gas related work within ASRY, covering the refurbishment and upgrading of jack-up rigs, offshore support vessels and anchor-handling tugs, along with the demanding offshore fabrication sector, both onshore and offshore structures, as well as the provision of skilled workers for ‘in-field’ repairs.

The year under review saw AOS repair a total of 12 jack-ups, a small increase on the number of rigs repaired the previous year. However, the important factor for ASRY was that the average spend per rig was significantly up on 2009, signalling that owners are more than happy to ask AOS to take onboard more and more challenging work.

Turnover for AOS in the year under review was US $34m, with the division’s success rate in tendering during 2010 being 92%. Jack-up operators working with AOS in 2010 equated for 36% of the available market in the Arabian Gulf, up from 16% in 2009.

During the year, AOS demonstrated its capabilities and high quality operations with demanding repairs to jack-up rigs for its major clients: Saudi Aramco, Hercules Offshore, Pride International, ENSCO, Great Offshore Ltd, Arab Drilling Co (ADC), Foresight Drilling and Transocean, with all projects delivered on time and to very high standards.

The biggest jack-up rig repair during 2010 was the work undertaken on Houston-based Pride International’s 1981-built Friede & Goldman designed Pride North Dakota. Other notable jack-up repairs during the year included the following:

• Arabiyah 7 – Saudi Aramco• Key Hawaii – Transocean• ENSCO 96 – ENSCO Oceanics International Co.• Pride Montana – Pride International• ADC 17 – Arab Drilling Co• Kedarnath – Great Offshore Ltd• Pride Hawaii – Pride International• SEP 350 – NPCC• Hercules 170 – Hercules Offshore• FD V – Foresight Drilling

While more and more jack-up operators were coming to Bahrain for work by AOS, many others were attracted to the yard by ASRY’s protected anchorages for rig stacking operations.

For AOS 2010 was all about best practices for safety, health, quality control and environmental protection, as well as being commercially competitive and completing projects on time and within budget. The group’s clients operate in a highly regulated industry and have demanding standards, so it’s vital that AOS is able to meet their expectations.

Looking to the future, AOS aims to continue to increase its portfolio of work and take on larger and larger projects. To this end its has embarked on a continuous programme of improving its working practices and safety record to realise it goal of becoming ‘the rig repair yard of choice in the Arabian Gulf,’ as well as further expanding into other offshore markets such as the repair of cable laying and pipe laying vessels.

In the coming year AOS expects to secure its first fabrication contract while at the same time also strengthening its management team, particularly in the areas of Engineering and Project Management.

Despite the global recession which has impacted hard during 2010, ASRY continues to push forward with its ambitious US $188.2m Strategic Expansion Plan. When completed in 2012, the yard will be ready and able to receive the upturn in business that is expected.

Expenditure to date has reached US $53m, with another US $60m committed under binding agreements and purchase orders. Loan provisions from the National Bank of Bahrain and from the Bank of Bahrain & Kuwait have been arranged.

Showing its confidence in the market, 2010 saw two notable events with regard to the facilities expansion programme: completion of the first 400m of the quay wall and the keel laying of the yard’s four new tugs, which ASRY is building itself.ASRY’s four new shipyard tugs, budgeted at US $20m, are of the Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) design developed by Singapore’s Sea Tech Solutions, utilising Schottle steerable rudder propeller units, and will be built by the yard itself on land adjacent to the slipways and launched using the slipways. A Materials Package for the new tugs is being supplied by Singapore’s Pacific Ocean Engineering & Trading.

The tugs are scheduled to enter service by the end of 2012. All four tugs will have a length of 25.8m, a bollard pull of 40 tonnes and a speed, at half load, of 11 knots. The highly manoeuvrable quartet has been designed specifically for docking and berthing operations within the shipyard, as well as for offshore towage duties. Equipped for fire-fighting operations as well as pollution control duties, the new tugs are also designed for push-pull operations from the bow and towing operations from the stern.

The new 1.38km repair quay wall represents 44% of the total Strategic Expansion Project budget (around US $82m) and comprises a 1,200m quay wall, with an alongside water depth of 12m, designed to accommodate three 300,000dwt vessels simultaneously, as well as a 180m berth for 40,000dwt vessels. Expenditure to date has reached US $33m.

The repair quay project, developed by UK-based consulting engineers Royal Haskoning, also includes the construction of all support facilities and electro-mechanical infrastructure necessary to ensure a high level of reliability for ASRY’s valued customers. The electro-mechanical infrastructure, budgeted

at around US $50m (all services required by the quay wall comprising electrical power, water, air, fire-fighting and sewage treatment) were tendered for in mid-October 2010 and a decision on the successful bidder is expected in the first quarter of 2011.

The main services are to be completed in parallel with the new repair quay, i.e. by the end of 2011, while the auxiliary services will be completed towards the second half of 2012. In this respect, the Government of Bahrain has just completed the upgrading of ASRY’s main power station, doubling the electrical power capacity available to the shipyard.
