FPA Headlines The Newsletter of your local association
Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message
It’s hard to believe that it’s October. The temperature today as I write this may top 90 degrees.
In case you missed it, we had an excellent program in September from Mary Beth Franklin from Investment News
regarding Medicare Planning. Over 115 people registered to attend this luncheon event! Our Ethics Course was well
received by over 90 registered attendees, as well! We also had a September allied professional’s happy hour and CE
event with the CFA Society of Washington at the Tower Club, where we outnumbered the CFA’s by a few. This
marks a successful networking event with the CFA Society, and we look forward to more of these in the future.
This month on October 12th our luncheon will be at Westwood Country Club with two presentations. Emily Dupree
from MFS will present Milestone Information: Mastering Social Security: Benefits for Spouses, Survivors and
Divorcees, and Paul Cieslik of American Funds will present a talk about The Advice Revolution. Both will offer great
insights on strengthening your client relationships and building a strong investment strategy with your clients. Both
sessions are approved for CFP, MD Insurance, VA Insurance, CIMA CE, and CPA CPE will be offered.
Also, we will have another Oktoberfest this year at Tyson's Biergarten on October 19! Mark your calendars, register
on line, and please plan to join us for a fun evening outside enjoying the fall weather, the beer and some great food!
We are looking for help for Metro Washington Financial Planning Day on October 28 to be held in Falls Church.
Please contact Susan Chesson, [email protected], to help out.

Coming in November will be another networking opportunity with CE at Maggiano’s in Tyson’s presented by Gary
Altman on estate planning. If you are looking to join a Nexgen study group, then you will want to mark your calendar
for November 7th. Contact Aaron Clarke for more details, [email protected].
Don’t forget to Do One Thing! Our Chapter Committees always need your help and involvement! Please let us know
which area you would like to offer your assistance! I look forward to seeing you soon at our upcoming events.
Best Regards,
Bryan Bryan Beatty, CFP®, AIF®

Susan and I know how much it means for many of us in the profession to be able to give back, to teach, to make a
difference. Our chapter’s members have been able to make a difference in people’s lives by participating in pro-bono
activities including Metro Washington Financial Planning Day (MMWFPD). Come join us this year to be a part of
an amazing day of helping people and supporting one another in our profession.

Why We Work – Video Testimonials
By Sam Boyd, FPA NCA Public Relations Director
In a world where information has become saturation and fees are being compressed by Robo advisers and
algorithms, it is more important than ever to put the person back into personal-finance.
Introducing why we work, a joint campaign between the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital
Area and Motley Fool Wealth Management, where we highlight the human side of financial planning, will debut at
our January 2018 Winter Symposium! The Why We Work campaign was created to capture short stories of
financial planners and their inspiration for why they work.
The micro volunteering theme for this year's FPA National Capital Area Board of Directors is "Do One Thing".
We've taken micro volunteering to the particle level and are asking you to answer one of five questions that will
allow you to highlight why it is that you do what you do.
At the Winter Symposium on January 26th, 2018, the Motley Fool and the Financial Planning Association of the
National Capital Area will have a booth set up to capture your answers to the questions below:
1. What is the most impactful financial planning recommendation that you've made in your career and why?
2. If you could thank one of your clients for something what would it be and why? If they were here right
now with you what would you say to them?
3. If you could provide yourself a piece of advice at the beginning of your career what would you say and
why?
4. What was your motivation for getting into this business and what motivates you today? If your motivation
has changed, why?
5. If you could erect a billboard in the middle of town with a financial planning related message, what would
it say?
By participating in the Why We Work campaign at the Winter Symposium, you'll receive a professionally edited
copy of your video response. You will be able to brand this video with your logo and use it on your website or
through social media marketing channels. We estimate a cost of $500 - $1,000 to have this work done
professionally with a videographer if you prepared it on your own. This benefit comes at no charge.
We have even negotiated bulk group pricing to have your Why We Work testimonial animated by a professional
whiteboard artist to take your testimonial to a whole new level; talk about a win-win situation!
The best of the best will be compiled into a short film that the FPA National Capital Area will use for public
relations enhancement and spreading the value of financial planning to the community of our colleagues and
clients at large.
Keep in mind you must attend the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area Winter Symposium
to participate in the Why We Work campaign. Follow us on Twitter @FPANationalCap to keep up-to-date with
Why We Work and begin to consider how you'll answer these five important questions.
Help us help you by putting the person back in personal-finance. After all, it's why we work. See the
announcement here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MhQddmtqRo

Call for Study Group Participants! Please respond if you are Interested!
I am keen on joining or starting a local area study group of allied professionals and willing to spearhead the effort.
Although this is subject to consent of participants, my initial thoughts are that it must have the following attributes:
1. 8-12 members
2. Meet quarterly for half day. Dates to be announced in advance.
3. Participants must be full time in the business minimum of 3-5 years and have a valid certification such as
CFP, CPA, JD, CLU, ChFC, MBA, etc.
4. The idea is to pick from different sub-specialties in our industry and allied professions and no more than one
per firm.
5. Costs to be shared equally even by non-attendees so that there is an incentive to attend and not miss out.
6. One member is on the “hot seat” at every meeting to give a detailed presentation followed by Q&A. Summary
updates from other participants.
Please let me know of your interest! Thanks, Vijay

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS!
We are delighted to share with you the exciting news that Judy L. Redpath, CFP®, AIF®, of VISTA Wealth
Strategies LLC in Reston, VA, has earned the prestigious Women's Choice Award ® for Financial Advisors and
Firms for the fourth consecutive year.
The Women's Choice Award for financial advisors is the premier recognition award earned by advisors who are
committed to the women's market and to serving their female clients with the highest level of quality service.
Women's Choice Award advisors have been evaluated through a rigorous evaluation including an extensive
evaluation process using 17 objective criteria.1
This recognition demonstrates Judy's commitment to our women clients, as well as to her profession - symbolizing
the integrity, knowledge and service excellence we strive to deliver to each of our clients.
1 The Women's Choice Award® Financial Advisor program was created by WomenCertified Inc., the Voice of Women, in an effort to help women make
smart financial choices. The Women's Choice Award Financial Program is based on 17 objective criteria associated with providing quality service to women
clients, such as credentials, experience, and a favorable regulatory history, among other factors. Financial advisors do not pay a fee to be considered or
placed on the final list of Women's Choice Award Financial Advisors, though they may have paid a basic program fee to cover the cost of their client survey.
The inclusion of a financial advisor within the Women's Choice Award Financial Advisor network should not be construed as an endorsement of the financial
advisor by WomenCertified Inc. or its partners and affiliates and is no guarantee as to future investment success. Women's Choice Award® Financial
Advisors and Firms represent less than 1% of financial advisors in the U.S. As of February 2017, of the 815 considered for the Women's Choice Award, 146
were named Women's Choice Award Financial Advisors/Firms. For more information, please visit http://www.womenschoiceaward.com/.
Launching the Encore Group, a new FPA NCA Community
A growing number of newer FPA NCA members are just starting out in our profession as career changers. Like
many of our clients, they are launching second careers – taking the Certified Financial Planner coursework either
online or through a local certification program. This new group will encourage networking between established
planners and new entrants to the field, and will offer opportunities for idea sharing and camaraderie for newly
credentialed planners who don’t quite fit the NexGen mold.
If you are interested in joining the group, please let Susan Chesson know: [email protected]
