    FOREWORD

    – 3 Champions –

“Brave men lived before Agamemnon” (after Horace) and Leicestershire had good sheep before Robert Bakewell, but Bakewell took the local sheep and improved them so that today their descendants are, and have been, the dominant crossing sires in the UK and around the world for over 200 years. Over time, the Border Leicester earned the moniker “The great Improver” because, quite simply, it is!

50 years ago this month, my father bought his first Border Leicesters from Norman Hughes at Tycanol. In 1966 I bought one of those ewes for £8. She lost her lamb at 3 months and died of liver fluke during the Foot & Mouth outbreak of 67/68. It was February 1981 before I took that brave step again. I bought a good old Skerrinton ewe, Y70 for £165, 2 weeks wages at that time. Her tup lamb was 1st at the RWAS and I sold him for £270. He became the GGS of a double Royal, Royal Welsh winner. My father then gifted me 3 ewes and along with the odd purchase at dispersals and Lanark, I was on my away.

Now almost all the sheep go back to just 3 ewes and, interestingly, all were bought at dispersals. BL60R I2 (Wheatrig) is responsible for the X9, Z29 (dam of Eildon Everest) line, BL573 O5 (Whinbush) gave me the X16, A16, D16, E61ET line and BL91F D13 (Coltcrooks) lead to the Y12 (GGD of Eildon Ultimo Regalis) & E5 lines.

Sometime in the late 80's, a well known breeder told me that using the best tups doesn't necessarily guarantee anything but you should, hopefully, breed to a better average across the flock. That piece of advice and the old adage “You can't breed rats from mice” are what have governed my selection policy over the years.

In 1985 I was very lucky to get a good old stock ram from the Forsyths of Chapelheron and Baltier, (25378) Glenside Supersonic, £6,500 as a lamb, a bit less as a 4 shear! He stands at the head of the Wheatrig & Coltcrooks lines. (28023) Hillhouse Hotspur £1,000 Lanark 1993 heads the Whinbush line. (27447) Hillend Major, (27615) Didcot Dolomite, (28529) Knowsie Centurion and (28651) Eildon The Mighty all played an important part in the 90’s.

(29130) Mosside Mighty Few - bought during the 60th anniversary of The Battle of Britain- combined strength and style and then came (29414) Knowsie Boomerang. These two rams combined very well, especially in the X16 line.

The rams that have followed those two, Mac's Last, Kentucky, Man O'Hoy, Everest, Ultimo Regalis, Ghali and 007 Solo have all done their bit. - see ram inventory at the back.

Showing has always been in the family blood and the flocks have enjoyed a certain amount of success, especially since 2003, including 6 Champions & 6 Reserves at the Royal Highland, 4 Champions & 4 Reserves at the Royal, 5 Champions & 4 reserves at the National Show and numerous Championships at Kelso and others. The Pairs Interbreed at the Royal in 1994, along with John & Gill Watkins's tup was quite special.

I think, however, 1st, 2nd & 3rd in a class of 13 gimmers at this year's Royal Highland gave me as much satisfaction as any. I am also extremely proud that the Eildon Flock won the inaugural National Flock Competition in 2011, testament maybe, to that piece of advice I got many years ago.

If showing is the pleasurable side then sales are the necessary bit and there is no doubt that show successes have helped to sell our sheep.

The flocks have achieved the Reserve champion at Lanark twice, the top price 3 times and the top average 4 times. Top prices include £4,800 (Majestic), £4,000 (Eyecatcher), £3,900 (Echo), £3,000 (President) & £2,600 (Rob Roy).

Shearlings are sold at Builth Ram Sales where the flocks have been Male Champion 8 times, Reserve 5 times & Female Champion 8 times. They have had the Sale top price 15 out of the last 16 years including Centre records of 2,700gns, Eildon Horace and 1,000gns for ewe lamb BL44W J84E. This is also a breed record for a ewe lamb. Top average at the Builth is £1,116 for 9.

The flocks have also topped each of the 3 Carlisle female sales to a top of 1,000gns.

It is generally known that I have a number of embryos frozen. These are not for my use but for a possible future generation or perhaps The Society who might like access to some historical bloodlines. An undertaking is also given that this year’s ewe lambs will be sold, probably at Lanark next year, and not used to restart. The flock numbers and prefixes will be given up as required.

I have known for a long time that this day would eventually come and that when it did, I would know. I hope we have done the flocks justice in their presentation, to represent the enormous pleasure that, over the years, they have given the whole family and for the friendships that have been forged by our association with this fantastic breed.

Jennifer and I are extremely grateful to all our previous customers and delighted with the success that many have had with them. We would like to wish every purchaser the very best of luck and give them our sincere thanks.
