Talented artists from three local elementary schools helped Northumberland County to

celebrate this year's Local Government Week (Oct. 15-21) by painting County snowplows in the theme of 'Ways We Work Together.”Student artists from St. Mary Catholic

Elementary School in Grafton and St. Anthony Catholic Elementary School and Ganaraska Trail Public School in Port Hope took part in the project. The plows were proudly on display at

County headquarters in Cobourg during the monthly meeting of County Council on Oct.18, earning high praise from the mayors of Northumberland’s seven municipalities. These works of art will be plowing roads near the participating schools this winter.“It’s pretty cool. I really like painting and

some time when I’m driving, I might see the plow that I painted,” said Grade 3 St. Anthony CES student Chelsea Clark, who helped paint her school’s submission.Local Government Week aims to increase

awareness among the general public - and in particular youth - about the important role of local government in our communities. The ‘Paint the Plow’ project encourages students to think broadly about the many ways that the programs, services

and initiatives managed by municipal government touch their lives. “Northumberland County Council and

staff sincerely thank the principals, teachers and students who were involved in this year’s ‘Paint the Plow’ project,” said Kate

Campbell, the County’s communications director.County Council intends to repeat the

project next year, turning it into a contest judged by the councillors with the winning school receiving a pizza lunch.

BRAVOPVNC earns two CACE Bravo Awards for school board communications

PVNC Communications Manager Galen Eagle took home two Canadian Association of

Communicators in Education (CACE) Bravo Awards of Distinction for the projects Vimy 100 and A Syrian Journey in October."It's one thing to celebrate accomplishments

as a school board, but quite another and much more satisfying experience to have the stories told in a way that engages the enthusiasm and pride of our communities,” Director of Education Michael Nasello said.“Galen Eagle is a masterful journalist with

a keen eye for the story that needs to be told. We congratulate him and are grateful for the skills and artistry he brings to PVNC in excellent communications. These awards are a wonderful recognition of this talent."The Bravo Awards recognizes and

honours exemplary work in all aspects of school public relations, communications, marketing and engagement. The awards ceremony is the highlight of

the annual CACE conference, which brings together communication professionals from school boards across Canada for professional development and to share best practices from coast to coast.PVNC has earned four Bravo awards

in the past two years. Last year the Board was recognized for its efforts in promoting self-regulation in classrooms and the re-branding of St. Thomas Aquinas CSS.Vimy 100While travelling with students from

Peterborough’s St. Peter and Holy Cross secondary schools in Europe as part of the Vimy 100 celebrations, Eagle captured images and stories in real-time through social media and wrote a series of columns for the Peterborough Examiner capturing the students’ voice as they toured WW1

and WW2 sites. Click here for a snapshot: https://goo.gl/PYzsc4A Syrian JourneyThrough photos, videos and story, Eagle

documented the arrival of the Board’s sponsored Syrian family from the moment they landed at Pearson Airport in Toronto, to their arrival in Peterborough and their warm welcome in their new school communities.

PVNC is excited to launch the second annual Put Your Director to Work Day.

Director of Education Michael Nasello is once again raffling himself off to raise money for a local United Way campaign. One lucky PVNC employee will get a day

off to kick up their feet, while Nasello rolls up his sleeves and does their job for the day. Last year, the raffle raised $1,485 and sent Nasello to St. Paul CES in Lakefield, where he filled the role of an educational assistant.“I had a great time last year working

closely with some great students and all the amazing staff at St. Paul Lakefield,” Nasello said. “Who will it be this year? A custodian? A kindergarten teacher? I can’t wait to find out.”The Director’s Office will be selling raffle

tickets to all of its employees as a fundraiser for the United Way. A single ticket costs $5 or employees can purchase three for $12.The employee whose winning ticket is

selected, whether it’s a supply teacher,

a custodian, an educational assistant, a secretary or any other staff position, will get a paid day off while Mr. Nasello toils away at their job.PVNC is pleased to partner with four

United Way campaigns in Peterborough, Durham, Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland. The winner’s work

location will determine where the raffle proceeds go.“Every year we support the United Way’s

mission as it works to empower some of our communities’ most vulnerable people and fund important social services that some of our students and their families rely on,” Nasello said. “This raffle is also a great opportunity to recognize the important roles all of our staff play in ensuring our students are given every opportunity to succeed.”Tickets will go on sale to PVNC staff at

school locations and the Board office on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The raffle runs until Friday, Dec. 1 and the winning ticket will be picked at the Director’s Meeting at the Board office on Wednesday, Dec. 13.The paid day off will be offered in the

new year at a mutually agreed date to be determined with the Director’s Office. We encourage all of our staff members to

take part and wish all participants good luck!
