PRAYER OF THE DAY PHILIPPIANS 4:6; 1 TIMOTHY 2:1

M: The Lord be with you.

M: Let us pray. The Pastor prays the Prayer of the Day.

O Lord *Jesus Christ, You are the Good Shepherd Who laid down Your life for thesheep. Lead us now to the still waters of Your life-giving Word that we may abide in YourFather's house forevermore; for You live and reign with Him and the Holy Spirit, one God,now and forever.

THE WORD ACTS 17:11; ROMANS 10:17

FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 34:11-16The seeking Shepherd is a vivid description of the ministry of our Lord in both His

death and ongoing proclamation of His Word. He sought us who were in bondage to sinand death from which we could not set ourselves free.

"'For this is what the SovereignLORD says: I myself will search for mysheep and look after them. 12 As ashepherd looks after his scattered flockwhen he is with them, so will I look aftermy sheep. I will rescue them from all theplaces where they were scattered on a dayof clouds and darkness. 13 I will bring themout from the nations and gather them fromthe countries, and I will bring them intotheir own land. I will pasture them on themountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all

the settlements in the land. 14 I will tendthem in a good pasture, and the mountainheights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazingland, and there they will feed in a richpasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 Imyself will tend my sheep and have themlie down, declares the Sovereign LORD. 16I will search for the lost and bring back thestrays. I will bind up the injured andstrengthen the weak, but the sleek and thestrong I will destroy. I will shepherd the

flock with justice.

L: The Word of the Lord. The congregation may respond to the reading by saying:

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 23The Refrain and “Glory be . . . ” are sung in unison. The Pastor or Lay Reader sings (says) the first strophe andthe congregation responds by singing (saying) the second.

Kings were often spoken of as shepherds, but the Shepherd-King of Israel is a Monarchunlike any other.

The Lord is my 'shepherd,* I shall not 'be in want.

He makes me lie down in green 'pastures;* he leads me beside quiet 'waters.

He re'stores my soul;* he guides me in paths of righteousness forhis 'name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of theshadow of death, I will fear no 'evil,* for you are with me; your rod and yourstaff, they 'comfort me.

Refrain

You prepare a table before me in thepresence of my 'enemies.* You anoint my head with oil; my cup'overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days 'of my life,* and I will dwell in the house of the Lordfor'ever.

Glory be to the Father and 'to the Son* and to the Holy 'Spirit,as it was in the be'ginning,* is now, and will be forever. 'Amen.

SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 2:21 - 25The "example" or pattern of Christ's sufferings is that He committed Himself to theFather who judges righteously. The Father would not turn away from the flock that hadbeen justified by Jesus' blood. The pattern of faith that we follow is the same. In the faceof our own sin and that which is laid upon us from others, we cast ourselves upon thejudgment of the Father who declares us righteous for Jesus' sake.

To this you were called, becauseChrist suffered for you, leaving you anexample, that you should follow in hissteps. 22 "He committed no sin, and nodeceit was found in his mouth." 23 Whenthey hurled their insults at him, he did notretaliate; when he suffered, he made nothreats. Instead, he entrusted himself to

him who judges justly. 24 He himself boreour sins in his body on the tree, so that wemight die to sins and live forrighteousness; by his wounds you havebeen healed. 25 For you were like sheepgoing astray, but now you have returned tothe Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

L: The Word of the Lord.

The congregation may respond to the reading by saying:

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAYThe Lay Reader speaks the Verse, the congregation sings the following Alleluia. PSALM 103; REV. 19:5-7

Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! I am the goodShepherd; I know My sheep and My sheep know Me. Alleluia!

THE GOSPEL (PLEASE STAND.) John 10:11-16The Gospel lesson is read from the Gospel horn of the Altar (liturgical north). [A reminder of the lamb’sblood dashed on the Old Testament Altar of Burnt Offerings.] The congregation stands and sings wordsof acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King.

A hireling does not care for the sheep as the Good Shepherd does, but rather flees when hesees the wolf coming. The wolf is Satan. He attacks us by using our sin against us. Wehave no defense in ourselves. But we have a Good Shepherd. He stood up to the devil by

laying down His life on our behalf. Jesus was the only One who could make atonement forour sin. He loved us to the point of laying down His life for us. The flock of Christ is keptsafe solely by the forgiveness of sins which is ours in the Good Shepherd. The ministry ofevery pastor is to be patterned after the ministry of our Lord. As He loved us and laiddown His life for our forgiveness, so pastors are to love their flocks and lay down theirlives, so to speak, for the cause of proclaiming that Word of forgiveness that sets themfree.

After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

11 “I am the good shepherd. Thegood shepherd gives His life for the sheep.12 But a hireling, he who is not theshepherd, one who does not own the sheep,sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheepand flees; and the wolf catches the sheepand scatters them. 13 The hireling fleesbecause he is a hireling and does not careabout the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd;

and I know My sheep, and am known byMy own. 15 As the Father knows Me, evenso I know the Father; and I lay down Mylife for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I havewhich are not of this fold; them also I mustbring, and they will hear My voice; andthere will be one flock and one shepherd.

After the reading of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

CONFIRMATION HYMN 596 “Let Me Be Yours Forever”

Page 5: A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP of service...good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming

THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION - Jacob Dorbin

M: Brothers and sisters in Christ: Our Lord Jesussaid to his disciples, "All authority in heaven and on earthhas been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciplesof all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Fatherand of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching themto obey everything I have commanded you. And surely Iwill be with you always, to the very end of the age."

In obedience to the Lord's command, Jacob, youhave been baptized in the name of the Father and of the(@) Son and of the Holy Spirit. You have been taught theprecious truths of the Christian faith as confessed by theEvangelical Lutheran Church. You know what God hasgiven you by His grace and what He expects of you as Hisdear child. To that end, you may now exercise theprivilege of partaking of Holy Communion.

You are here to make a public profession ofyour Christian faith. The Apostle Paul writing to theRomans says: "If you confess with your mouth, '*Jesus isLord' and believe in your heart that God raised him fromthe dead, you will be saved ... For it is with your heart thatyou believe and are justified, and it is with your mouththat you confess and are saved. Everyone who calls onthe name of the Lord will be saved."

Therefore, lift up your heart to the God of allgrace and joyfully answer these questions:M: Do you this day in the presence of God and ofthis congregation acknowledge that in Baptism, God gaveyou the gifts of forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation?R: I do.M: Do you renounce the devil along with all his liesand empty promises?R: I do.M: Do you renounce all his works?R: I do.M: Do you renounce all his ways?R: I do.M: Do you believe in God the Father, God the Son,and God the Holy Spirit?R: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our

Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day be rose again from the dead.He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the (@) life everlasting. Amen.

M: Do you believe all the books of the Bible, theprophetic and apostolic Scriptures, to be the inspiredWord of God?R: I do.M: Do you believe that the teaching of theEvangelical Lutheran Church, as you have learned toknow it from Luther's Small Catechism, is faithful andtrue to the Word of God?R: I do.M: Do you intend to live and continue steadfast inthis teaching and Church, to endure, to suffer all things, even death, rather than fall away from it?R: I do, and I ask God to help and lead me.M: Do you intend faithfully to conform all your lifeto the teachings of God's Word; to be faithful in the useand hearing of the Word of God, to daily remember yourBaptism and faithfully receive the Lord’s Supper; and infaith, word, and action remain true to God, Father, Son,and Holy Spirit, as long as you live?R: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

(Prayers and the Lord’s Prayer to follow.)

HYMN OF THE DAY 360 “The Lord’s My Shepherd; I’ll Not Want”

SERMON The Sermon is usually based on the Gospel.

Listen to the Voice of The Shepherd!

PSALM

51:10-12

OFFERING 1 CORINTHIANS 16:2; 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7

The offering plates are given to the ushers by the Pastor.

OFFERING HYMN 447 “Who Trust in God, a Strong Abode”While the offering of our gifts to Lord for use by His church is being received by the ushers, the Pastor is preparingthe communion vessels for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.

OFFERING PRAYER ROMANS 12:1; HEBREWS 13:15,16

M: Father of all mercies, accept, we implore You, our bodies and souls, our hearts andminds, and all that we are and all that we bring to Your altar to be a holy, reasonable, and lively offering to You for the work of Your Church. Graciously receive ourofferings of praise and thanksgiving, born of Your Spirit through the Gospel, even asYou have received Your Church’s worship since the world began, for You haveredeemed us to be Your own that we may live to You with all that we are and all thatwe have. May our offerings of praise, be given in the same spirit as the gifts of Josephof Arimathea and Nicodemus for Christ’s burial; now be borne by the hand of Yourholy angel to Your altar on high before the sight of Your divine Majesty; through*Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the HolySpirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Page 6: A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP of service...good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH PHILIPPIANS 4:6; 1 TIMOTHY 2:1,2

It is a prayer which “understandingly and unselfishly reveals true concern for the Church in all of its operations, the state and its governance, the home and its welfare, while it also remembers before God all mankind in theirrespective callings and necessities.” (Luther Reed)

Acknowledging that the tomb is empty and our Lord *Jesus Christ is risen, let usintercede for the whole Church, the nations, and all those in need.

For all whom the Good Shepherd calls by name through the Gospel in the waters ofHoly Baptism to follow Him, that they may remain faithful to the whole counsel of God andserve the weak by ministering to their needs of body and soul.

For the enemies of the Church, that the Holy Spirit may open their ears to hear Christ’svoice in the Gospel, witness His awesome works of salvation and come to know their error inthe light of God's truth. Sustain those who have been entrusted with the public proclamation ofYour Word. Keep them steadfast that they may protect Your people from false prophets anddiscern worldly spirits so that Your Church may be preserved in faith and love.

For all the baptized who face trial and tribulation from Christ's enemies, that they mayfear no evil even as they walk through the shadow of death.

For those who serve in all the departments and agencies of governments in the worldthat they may led by Your Spirit to serve the common good. Shatter the plans of those whowould rob the resources and hope of their own lands. Where injustice reigns, raise up justice.Where there is war or talk of war, bring peace.

For artists, the beautiful things they craft, and the beauty of creation, that they mayflourish like rain upon the earth and lead us to lift our eyes to the divine Creator of all things.

For the labors of farmers and all those who plow the earth, that You would grantseasonable weather that they may plant their seeds and plants that we may later gather in thefruits of the earth and proclaim Your goodness with thanksgiving.

For Your church on earth, that we may lead many to enter the kingdom of God throughthe Door that is Christ the Lord.

For those sorrowing in sickness or in the face of surgery, undergoing chemo, radiation, those who are homebound, those under the daily stress and temptations of life, and those whodesire to be remembered in our prayers, (including Syliva Bowelish, Tom Hall, Matt Hart,Mike Hillyer, Pat Packard, Juanita, Terry, Pam, and Gene Pursell, Gladys Schumacher,Connie & Ruby, Michael Strong, Jean Hamilton, Jenetia Hines, John Kenyon, Barbara Moll --- and those we now name in our hearts. . .), that in the incarnate Word Who promises life, Godwould grant strength to the weary, power to the weak, and healing to the infirm.

In praise for the noble martyrs and blessed saints at rest in the Lord, whose robes havebeen washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb, that we who have been clothed in thebaptismal robe of Christ may one day join their eternal service in His heavenly temple.

Before Him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb we bring these petitions that Hemay shepherd His people to springs of living water, even *Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus ISAIAH 6:3, MATTHEW 21:9

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER / PRAYER OF THANKSGIVINGJesus took bread and gave thanks. The Greek word “eucharist” means thanksgiving. MATTHEW 26:26

M: Blessed are You, O Lord of heaven and earth. Almighty God, heavenly Father,we praise and thank You for Your tender mercy. You sent Your only Son, Christ*Jesus to us, and we remember His incarnation, obedience to the Law andcrucifixion, through which He ransomed and redeemed us from sin, death and thedevil’s power. By His rising from the grave, and His glorious ascension, Herestores us as Your children and opens heaven that we may commune with Youeternally. In His Holy Gospel, *Jesus instituted and commanded us to celebrate aperpetual remembrance of His precious death until He comes again. Thus invitedby Your grace, we now approach Your table with repentant and joyful hearts.

EPICLESIS JAMES 1:17,18

This prayer incorporates a prayer of First Century Jewish Christians and Luther’s explanation of the sacramentalunion in the Lord’s Supper.

M: O merciful Father, King of all creation, every good and perfect gift comesdown from You, the Father of heavenly lights. Send down Your Holy Spirit uponYour gifts of bread and wine, and bless them and hallow them; that we might beled by *Jesus’ words of institution to proclaim that in, with, and under the breadand wine that this bread is the precious Body of Our Lord and God and Savior*Jesus Christ; and this cup is the precious Blood of our Lord and God and Savior*Jesus Christ, which was shed for the life of the world.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION MATTHEW 26:26-28; 1 CORINTHIANS 11:24,25

(Speaking the Words of Institution, the Pastor proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart thebread and wine for the Lord’s use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ's death and atonement of sins.)

M: Our Lord *Jesus Christ, on the night He was betrayed, took bread; and when Hehad given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, and said: “Take, eat;this is My @ body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.” In the same way also, He took the cup after supper and when He had giventhanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink from it, all of you; this cup is the newtestament in My @ blood which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Thisdo, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PRAYER FOR COMMUNICANTSIn His word, God makes it clear that Holy Communion is to be shared by people of a common confession of faith;agreement in teaching and belief (1 Corinthians 11:26, 1 Corinthians 10:16). So without judging anyone’s hearts,or faith, we invite those who share in this confession by their membership in our congregation or one of our sistercongregations, and who are properly prepared (1 Corinthians 11:27-29), to receive the Sacrament.

M: Earnestly desiring Your Fatherly goodness, to mercifully accept our offering ofpraise and thanksgiving: we most humbly implore You to grant that, by the meritsand death of Your Son *Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and Yourwhole church may obtain remission of our sins and all other benefits of HisPassion. We humbly implore You that all who partake of this Holy Communion mayworthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son *Jesus Christ, and be filled with Your grace and heavenly blessing, and being made one bodywith Him, may dwell in Him, even as He dwells in us.

Page 8: A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP of service...good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming

Strengthen us now through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the truefaith until we feast with Him and all His ransomed people in glory everlasting. Through Him, with Him, in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory andhonor are Yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER MATTHEW 6:9-13

M: Taught by our Lord and trusting His promise, we are bold to pray:

Prayed jointly by the Pastor and congregation:

C: Our Father, Who art in heaven, %hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; %and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from @ evil. For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. %

PEACE OF THE LORDHolding the Host over the Chalice, the Pastor elevates the Sacrament in deference to the sacramental union ofChrist with the earthly elements, turns toward the congregation and blesses them, saying:

M: The peace @ of our Lord *Jesus Christ,@ the Lamb of God, be with you @ always!

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei JOHN 1:29

Jesus is God’s Lamb (“Agnus Dei”) of sacrifice; of redemption and atonement offered up for the sins of the world.

DISTRIBUTION OF OUR LORD’S BODY AND BLOOD 1 CORINTHIANS 11:27-29

The Pastor distributes the Sacrament to those eligible communicants who present themselves.

Note: Those persons who desire to commune and who are not members of St. John’s are asked to speak tothe Pastor prior to the start of this morning’s divine service, since we believe that the Lord's Supper is anintimate expression of our unity based on all that we believe and teach according to the Bible as taught in1 Corinthians 10:17. We believe that our unity is determined by agreement with the teachings and beliefsof the Bible as practiced by the Wisconsin Synod (WELS) or Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) andexpressed through membership. Therefore, we encourage guests and visitors to learn more about what webelieve and teach. Our practice is not meant to be a reflection on anyone's faith or lack of faith in Jesus. We encourage those who are communing to read page 156 of the Hymnal in preparation to receive theLord’s Supper. 1 Cor. 11:23-29 (Communion Prayers are also printed on page 11 of the Hymnal.)

I give You thanks, Lord God heavenly Father, that You have refreshed me with the Body andBlood of Your Son *Jesus Christ. O Lord, cling to my members; and grant that no stain of sin remain inme, whom You have refreshed with a pure and holy sacrament; and I further pray, that this heavenly foodmay strengthen my faith that I may bear all crosses, sicknesses and trials with patience and trust; throughthe same *Jesus Christ, our Lord.
