A Reading from the Holy Gospel [Luke 3:7-18]

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke.People: Glory to you, O Christ.

John said to the crowds that came out to bebaptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Whowarned you to flee from the wrath to come?Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not

begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abrahamas our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able fromthese stones to raise up children to Abraham.Even now the ax is lying at the root of thetrees; every tree therefore that does not beargood fruit is cut down and thrown into thefire.” And the crowds asked him, “What thenshould we do?” In reply he said to them,“Whoever has two coats must share withanyone who has none; and whoever has foodmust do likewise.” Even tax collectors came tobe baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He said to them, “Collectno more than the amount prescribed for you.”

Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shouldwe do?” He said to them, “Do not extortmoney from anyone by threats or falseaccusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”As the people were filled with expectation, andall were questioning in their hearts concerningJohn, whether he might be the Messiah, Johnanswered all of them by saying, “I baptize youwith water; but one who is more powerful thanI is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thongof his sandals. He will baptize you with the HolySpirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand,to clear his threshing floor and to gather thewheat into his granary; but the chaff he willburn with unquenchable fire.” So, with manyother exhortations, he proclaimed the goodnews to the people.

Deacon: The Gospel of Jesus Christ.People: Praise to you, O Christ.

The Nicene Creed The people may stand.

The Nicene Creed is a historical statement of faith used by the early Christian community to define orthodoxy. Please join us as you feel called.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Filioque (Latin for “and the son”), the dogmatic formula expressing the double procession of the HolySpirit, was added to the Nicene Creed by the Western church.

Table Chant The people may stand.

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer 2 is from Enriching Our Worship,

supplement to The Book of Common Prayer, Church Publishing, Inc.

Celebrant: God is with us.People: God is present here.Celebrant: Rejoice! Lift up your hearts.People: We lift our hearts to the Most High.Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Holy One.People: It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Celebrant:

We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before timeyou made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being:sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet,as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to livein the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praisethat rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we say:

People and Celebrant:

Holy, holy, holy God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is the one who comes in the name of God.Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant:

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God.

People and Celebrant:

To deliver us from the power of sin and deathand to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son,Jesus the holy child of God.

Celebrant:

Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, andproclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we wereheedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross thegift of his life, and to be glorified by you.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at thewords concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine tobe consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanksto you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said:

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said:

“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and forall for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

People and Celebrant:

Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come,we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves.

.….I was deeply moved by the story of the poorman’s vision of the Lady of Guadalupe. I wasstruck by how lowly, insignificant people have tobeg the church to regard them with the esteemwith which God regards them… The poor andlowly often have to beg the church to proclaimand live out its message of a merciful, compassionate God! Behind the vision’s gilded

cactus leaves, miraculous roses, and imprintedcloak is the longing for a God who comes, notin the might of military conquest, nor in theecclesiastical forms and evangelism plans of amighty church, but in simple compassionaterespect and regard for the lowly, the hungry, the women, the poor, the children….

He was promised by those who shared your dream of peace; John the Baptist cleared his way withwords of desert fire; Mary and Joseph accepted his coming with tenderness and faith; we know thathe draws near again to show us who we really are with honesty and love.

Now we take up the song of hope that we might awaken to his coming among us and the worldbe touched by the footfall of his glory:

Sanctus (Holy)

All continue

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the powerof sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor uponMary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy childof God.

Celebrant:Living among us, Jesus loved us.

He took bread, gave thanksto you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for youand for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

People and Celebrant:

Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves.

Celebrant:

+Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe yourSpirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the worldyou have made.

Giving and Receiving — TODAY Is Your Day!

“If you learn to respond as if it’s the first day in your life and thevery last day, then you will have spent this day very well.”

—David Steindl-Rast, Benedictine monk.

What better way to spend TODAY than to turn in your Estimateof Giving for 2016. No gift is too small! We need everyone to joinus in supporting God’s work in this blessed place. As of lastTuesday, we had 192 estimates of giving, totaling $405,700. Ourgoal is $550,000.

Make today a day well spent by your generous response. Thankyou.

Blue Christmas Service, Tonight at 6 p.m.

The Blue Christmas Service is a community-wide tradition that was started at Grace St.Paul’s by The Rev. Gordon McBride in 2001. It is a special quiet and meditative liturgy forthose experiencing loss, pain, or loneliness during the holiday season.

The music and prayers are designed to be comforting and to lift your spirits. It is open toall in the Tucson community who would like to be with others experiencing loss of a lovedone, be it a child, a parent, a partner, spouse, friend, or pet. Some people come each yearto remember their loved one even though their loss may have been many years ago. Forsome their loss may have been very recent.

The service includes a candle lighting ritual in which we remember those persons who havebeen loved and lost. We pause to remember their names, their faces, or their voices.People may feel the loss of health or loss of a job, loss of a relationship. People may feelalienated from the culture around them because they are depressed and not joyful.

There are several opportunities for healing: lighting candles, writing a message, listening tomusic, or just sitting quietly. As we express our grief, we can become reconciled to it. Wenever get over our loss. But hope emerges. Pastoral care givers will be present to listen, offer support and provide resources. Join us for hot cider and cookies after the service.

Celebrate the Winter SolsticeThursday, Dec. 17, 5:30 p.m.

The Winter Solstice and the longest night of the year will be celebrated on December 17.That evening at 5:30 p.m., we will gather for a meditative service in the front of the church, piercing the darkness with our light. We will join with the Paul Winter consort in theCathedral of St. John the Divine and share in that music as we mark the turning point ofthe season and connecting us to God through this important night. A labyrinth walk willfollow, weather permitting, before closing the service in the warmth of the church.

A potluck in McBride Hall will follow this service. Please bring your favorite dish or dessertto share.

Spiritual Support Group for DepressionGrace St. Paul’s, January, 2016

“The Soul has bandaged moments.” – Emily Dickinson

Sometimes feelings of hopelessness, anxiety and despair become overwhelming, or persistlonger than expected. There is no pleasure or solace in simple things enjoyed before, andit’s a struggle to get through the day. Feelings of isolation grow because these experiencesare hard to talk about.

Sharing with others is good medicine for depression and is called for in our belovedcommunity. This is not a therapy group. This time-limited support group offers a safe placeto share, listen, and be together during our journey. The group is facilitated by Rev. ChrisLedyard and Karen Hanson, and will meet on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m., January 7-February 11, 2016.

Please contact Rev. Chris Ledyard or Isabel Amsel through the Grace St. Paul’s office, at(520) 327-6857. Space is limited, so call beforehand to reserve your place. The expectationis that all will commit to the full 6 weeks.

MEMORIAL GARDEN RENEWAL!

Grace St. Paul’s Memorial Garden was created in 2000 and since then, many parishionershave chosen the garden as the place of remembrance for a loved one. Over the years thelandscaping has aged and deteriorated to the point that it no longer reflects the ultimatelevel of respect and honor we hold for this sacred place. Plans are underway to revitalizethe Memorial Garden, beginning with new plants and crushed granite ground cover.Returning the garden to the highest degree of beauty, respect, and contemplation requiresfunding that is not in our budget. Your gifts to the general fund will assist in making thisrevitalization happen.

Note: A new section of single and double burial niches is now available for purchase orreservation.

For more information on the Niche Wall or the renewal project of the Memorial Garden, please call the office or Bill Moore, 757-876-7373.

Coffee Hour HospitalityWe’d like to make coffee hour self-supporting. Your donations of food and any monetarycontributions you make can help offset the costs of condiments and paper products.

Coffee and light refreshments are offered on Sundays at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in McBrideHall. We have wonderfully generous members and talented bakers and we want to takeadvantage of both. So, in an effort to have the wealth spread evenly across the variousSundays each month, we’ll ask folks to provide goodies based on the first letter in their lastnames:

Page 43: A Progressive Community — Loving God, Serving Others ...gsptucson.org/parish/bulletins/Bulletin-12-13-2015.pdf · 12/13/2015  · The Third Sunday of Advent The Feast of Our Lady

! The first Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters A–F

! The second Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters G–L

! The third Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters M–R

! The fourth Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters S–Z

Our hope is that, by providing some sort of schedule, we will have something delicious tooffer consistently every Sunday. Let’s have a feast every week! Of course, anyone inspiredto share good food on additional Sundays is welcome to do so. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Allen, the chair of the Coffee Hour Hospitality ministry, at 327-4448.
