Dear parents,

It has a been a great start to Term 4, especially for our Stage 3 students who had a wonderful time in Canberra last week. From all reports, the students were extremely well behaved and learnt a lot in our nation’s capital. A big thank you to Mrs Woodham, Mr Frew, Mrs Mitchell and Mr Mensforth for taking time away from their families to give our Stage 3 students the experience of an excursion to Canberra. This week it’s the Year 3 students’ turn for an excursion. They are off to Sydney on Friday and very excited about the activities they will be involved in. Thank you to Miss Hall for her organisation of this excursion and learning opportunity for Year 3 students. Last week I was organising the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships in Homebush. It was very exciting for me to be able to announce over the PA, students from Copacabana Public School. Congratulations to Emmy, Emma and Tylah on their achievements. It is a great feat making it to the top level of your sport in the state! This week is also an exciting and perhaps nervous time for our 2017 Kindergarten students. Our new Kinders will have the first of their 4 days of Headstart tomorrow. We are very eager to welcome next year’s Kindergarten and can’t wait to prepare them for their educational journey at Copacabana.

COPACABANA PUBLIC SCHOOL Effort Earns Success

Hanging on my Wall of Fame this week are some new

amazing artworks. Summer in 3H has brightened the

wall with her Olympic inspired toucan artwork. Asha,

Sadie and Monique in 1N have been experimenting

with line and colour to create 3D effects. Their

“jumping castle” artworks are very creative.

Congratulations to Koru in 1R, Ruby P in 2M, Kai in 1N

and Aiden in KH. These students are the latest

recipients of a Seaside Snacks voucher for always

wearing full school uniform.

Next Thursday 3rd November we will be holding a

school disco. All proceeds from the night will go

towards supporting Gabe. Disco for Gabe will start at

4pm for K-2 students and at 6pm for Yrs 3-6. A big

thank you to Lil’Ravers for donating their time to run

this disco for the students and Gabe and his family. A

flyer with more information

Canberra Recount by Paris-Lily. Day 1:

On Wednesday the 19th of October 2016, I woke up bright and early (well I guess you could say I wasn’t as bright) at 5:00am! I got up and got ready and was out the door at 5:55am. When I arrived at school, all of my Friends were there waiting for me. When we got on the bus, it was 6:00am. The first thing we did was vote for what we wanted to watch. Everyone voted for Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. When we got on the freeway, we watched the movie and played on the D.S’. We arrived at the Parliament House after a long trip and had lunch on the grass in front of the Parliament House.

The first thing we did in Parliament House was a role play where we went in a room and role played what happens in the House of Representatives. After that, we actually went into the House of Representatives in the sound proof booth and got to experience it in action because they were debating a new gun law in Australia. Everyone was in the room from Lucy Wicks, to the Prime Minister. It was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Next, we went into the Senate aka the Red Room. It was really cool because the chairs were really big and it was very interesting. After that we got the privilege to go into the Speakers Office. We went into his courtyard, office and dining room. It was really cool.

The next adventure was off to the Government House where the Governor General lives in. What we did first was watch a video of the Governor General, which was produced by the Governor himself. Then we got a tour of his house. Did you know his dining room table can seat 52 people! Then we got an outside tour. He has a pool, a river and a really cool car which unfortunately we didn’t get to see.

Secondly, we drove to our cabins, settled in, then had dinner, for dinner we had a delicious lasagne and yummy, brown chocolate cake! Then settled into bed and off to sleep I went!

Day 2:

That morning, we woke up with

Mrs Woodham kindly knocking on the door and turning the lights on. When we all got ready, we went to breakfast. I had toast with strawberry jam. Then we were off to the AIS. Yay! When we arrived, we walked around to all the training places. Then we went into Sportex where there were many games to play. It was really fun!

The second place we went was Old Parliament House, which we got to “vote” in. By that I mean we got to see what happens when you go to vote. We experienced how to and what to do in a voting situation.

Thirdly, we went to the National Museum, where we went to Kspace. Kspace is basically where you get to make your own avatar then go into this room and go on a mission, whether it be saving dinosaurs or saving the Harbour Bridge. It was really cool. Then we went to Circa, which was a cinema with a 12 minute movie and we moved while in our seats. It was really amazing. After, we went to a playground in the museum and we all ran around.

Fourthly, we went to Black Mountain Tower and 16 of us crammed into an elevator and went really high up. We saw the whole of Canberra. It was really windy up there. My hair was everywhere!

Lastly, we went to the Dinosaur Museum at night. The

dinosaurs in there were spectacular!





Stage 2 Science Enrichment Group

The Stage 2 science enrichment group this week looked at physics with the study of matter, energy and the interaction between them. Their goal was to build a roller coaster for marbles using foam pipe insulation and masking tape. They had to investigate how much height was needed in order for the marble to run through a loop of fixed size and how stored energy is converted into the energy of motion. Ms Drennan

NSWPSSA Athletics Congratulations to Emmy, Tylah and Emma who com-peted at the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships at SOPAC last week. The girls tried their hardest and did Copacabana proud. Well done, girls!

School Sport Zone Ball Games Gala Day Good luck to the Copacabana Ball Games Teams that will be heading to Ettalong Oval on Friday to compete in the Zone Ball Games Gala Day. There are four Stage 2 teams going and four Stage 3 teams going to the event that includes Captain Ball, Tunnel Ball, Overs and Unders and Tug-o-war.

Weekend Sport Basketball Brianna has been selected as an ath-lete in the Central Coast Academy of Sport for Basketball. Surfing Byron has had some great results in his surfing recent-ly. He placed 3rd at the Ripcurl Grom Search at Maroubra, 4th at the Smoothstar Mirco Groms Comp at Torquay and 5th at the Ripcurl Grom Search at Jan Juc. Well done, Byron! Gymnastics

Well done to Hayley who competed at the NSW State Gym-nastics Championships in Sydney. She scored second on beam, second on floor, third on bars and second on vault. This placed her first overall! Well done, Hay-ley! Congratulations to Hayley and Sasha who competed at the Country Gymnastics Championships. Sasha placed 2nd in Floor and Vault and 3rd in Bar and Beam, which gave her 3rd overall in her division. Hayley placed 2nd in all events, which gave her 1st overall in her division. Well done, girls! Ice Hockey Congratulations to Nick who was selected in the U/14 NSW Ice Hockey Team. He will be travelling to the USA in March next year with the team on a repre-sentative tour. Great work, Nick! Oztag Great results for Jack, Gabby and Tylah who all repre-sented the Central Coast Bulls at the National Oztag Championships at Coffs Harbour. All players made it through to the Semi Finals in their respective teams, which is a huge achievement.

Cycling

Well done to Maya who had some excellent results at the Dunc Gray Open yesterday in Bankstown. She placed first in the 8-lap Scratch, 1-lap Time Trial, Sprint, 2-lap Time Trial, 20-lap Scratch. Great work, Maya!

My name is Pat Sharp and I am the School Administration Manager here at Copacabana Public School. I was born in Dartford, KENT in England 54 years ago. When I was 18 months old, after a two-week holiday in Cornwall where it rained constantly and 3 children locked up in a small caravan, my parents decided that there must be sunnier warm environment across the seas to raise children and so we moved to Australia. Dressed in our fur line boots, tights, jackets, hats and gloves we touched down on Darwin tarmac on the 6th December 1964. We had indeed found a nice warm country to live as we stripped off the

warm “British Attire” and invested in shorts, t-shirts and thongs and started our lives in Australia.

Our first home was at Kirribilli, this lasted a week due to the costly rents. We moved to the bright lights of Kings Cross where Billy Thorpe thrashed out his songs on the balcony across the road to all hours of the night and morning. Mixed with the colourful neighbours that lived either side of us, my parents decided that perhaps family life would be more suitable out in the suburbs.

We built a house in Chester Hill and life growing up in the sixties and seventies in the western suburbs was the best years of my life. Lifetime friendships were formed, the live music scene filled our clubs and pubs and the days were magical. We learnt to travel on trains and buses, we rode our bikes far and wide, played outside until street light curfew, without mobile phones to contact each other. We just seemed to know where to turn up and at what time to meet to have our childhood and teenage adventures. I attended Chester Hill Public School and the Sefton High School. Upon leaving school, I entered into the Finance world with careers in the Commonwealth and National Australia Bank. Travelling to the city every day, learning the fine art of General Ledgers coupled with the social aspect of adulthood and discovering the wonderful venues from Central Station to the Rocks area.

I met my husband at the age of 21 and we gave up the city life and moved to the Central Coast buying our home at Tacoma. We have 3 children; Daniel who is now 30, Naomi who is now 28 and April who is 24. I was a stay at home mum for their younger years and when they started school at Tacoma Public School, I slowly re-entered the workforce taking on roles as Canteen Manageress, P&C President, Teacher’s Aide and casual office work at the school and other schools across the coast.

In the year 2000, I won a permanent position as School Administration Office at Narara Valley HS. During my time as SAO, I was given some wonderful opportunities to expand my horizons by relieving in The School Administration Manager Role at different schools. In 2006, I became SAM at Narara Valley HS and became involved with the Learning and Management Business Reform solution that was being introduced across NSW schools. I was part of the Business Requirement Statements Team and then was seconded as a Subject Matter Expert to Sydney in 2010 to the LMBR team. I returned to Narara Valley HS in 2011 and won the Business Manager Role.

In 2014 with the need of a sea change, I applied for the advertised position of SAM at Copacabana Public School. The exhilaration I felt on my first day was amazing as I walked through the gate, the students, the staff and the community were so warm and welcoming. The atmosphere within the school was positive, vibrant and the dedication from the staff to see that they delivered a high quality education to the Copa students was truly amazing. I fell in love with the school within those first few minutes.

Last year I took on the challenge to train the Central Coast Primary Schools and implement the LMBR solution

deployment. I spent the first 9 months of this year training SASS staff, troubleshooting problems encountered and

supporting schools across the Central Coast. Watching the schools switching off their antiquated systems and turning

on the new solution was very fulfilling after being part of the project for 9 years. BUT, returning to Copa the first day

of this term, driving past the beach and reaching the driveway, watching the students, staff and parents engage in a

busy first day back inspired that same pang of excitement and exhilaration as my first day. I felt like I was home.
