“I enjoy the opportunities to expand my knowledge and share my work with my fellow practitioners and am looking forward to the upcoming year as MA-AUA president.”

Dr. Edouard Trabulsi Named President of Mid-Atlantic American Urological Association

The Department of Urology is pleased to announce Dr. Edouard Trabulsi’s appointment to serve a one-year term as president of the Mid-Atlantic American Urological Association (MA-AUA) effective October 2016.

Dr. Trabulsi has been a member of MA-AUA for 12 years in which he previously served as a board member and section secretary.

“I am proud and honored to be appointed to this position for such a prestigious association,” said Dr. Trabulsi. “I look forward to working with my fellow members in the upcoming year in bringing more attention and growth to our section.”

As president, Dr. Trabulsi anticipates leading initiatives to build membership and improve the section’s promotions and awareness. Additionally, he will coordinate two annual meetings: one for the membership and the other for residents.

This year’s membership meeting at Amelia Island, FL, marks the 75th anniversary of the section. The four-day scientific gathering will focus on the scientific exchange of urological education, practice and research.

As a member and now president of MA-AUA, Dr. Trabulsi believes his affiliation helps bring prominence and visibility to Jefferson’s internationally recognized experts in all major fields of urology. “Being a part of MA-AUA helps improve our department’s reputation in the urological community. Having physicians who serve in national positions for prestigious organizations is something Jefferson Urology has always been proud of,” noted Dr. Trabulsi.

In addition to his new appointment, Dr. Trabulsi currently serves on the Society of Urological Oncology’s Board of Directors, is president of the Philadelphia Urologic

Society and is active on three national AUA committees.

Dr. Trabulsi is the third Jefferson urology physician in recent years to be appointed MA-AUA president. Previously, Drs. Leonard Gomella and S. Grant Mulholland held the position.

Dr. Trabulsi appreciates the support and freedom that Jefferson, in particular Dr. Gomella, has afforded him in pursuing myriad professional affiliations.

“Jefferson and the Department of Urology have always been supportive and encouraging in my pursuit of leadership roles and affiliation memberships within the national urological community,” Dr. Trabulsi remarked. “I enjoy the opportunities to expand my knowledge and share my work with my fellow practitioners and am looking forward to the upcoming year as MA-AUA president.”

Congratulations to Dr. Deborah Glassman, who has been promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Urology.

Congratulations to Drs. Leonard Gomella and Edouard Trabulsi for receiving the prestigious, peer-nominated Castle Connolly Award as top doctors for cancer, which is presented to physicians who are nationally recognized leaders and contributors in their specialties.

Welcome to Dr. Puneeta Ramachandra, a new pediatric urologist joining the Jefferson faculty at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Dr. Ramachandra comes to the greater Philadelphia area from the Valley Children’s Hospital in California, where she was in practice for three years. Originally from New Jersey, she completed a urology residency in 2011 at the University of Connecticut in Farmington, CT, and fellowship in pediatric urology in 2013 at UCSD

Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, CA. As a fellow, she also completed the Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST) at the University of California in San Diego. Dr. Ramachandra is interested in all aspects of caring for children with urologic concerns.

Among the many faculty accomplish-ments, Dr. Edouard Trabulsi has been promoted to full professorship.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Week 2016 screening program was held at Jefferson with more than 200 men receiving prostate cancer screenings and general metabolic testing. Pictured below (left)are Jim Manion, Kathy Burns, Dr. Dolores Byrne and John Davis of the Department of Urology, sporting the “official” PCEC sunglasses and “P” pretzels courtesy of the Philly Pretzel Factory. The event was supported by many Jefferson departments and staff. Picture below (right) is Dr. Dolores

Byrne with students rotating in Urology and her post baccalaureate students, who helped with the patient intake process.

It is with extreme sadness that the Department of Urology reports the passing of Dr. Craig Slotoroff in December. Dr. Slotoroff, who is a graduate from our program as Chief Resident in 2008, passed away after a long illness. Dr. Slotoroff had a busy practice at the New Jersey shore.

Drs. Costas Lallas, Leonard Gomella and Edouard Trabulsi, along with Anne Calvaresi, CRNP, were part of a team of physicians and support staff from multiple specialties who authored “Clinical Influences in the Multidisciplinary Management of Small Renal Masses at a Tertiary Referral Center,” a unique multidisciplinary program to help with decision making in the management of small renal masses (Published online August 18, 2016, in Urology Practice).

Dr. Mark is an assistant professor of urology at Thomas Jefferson University.

In 2015, Dr. Mark gradu-ated from TJU’s urology program as chief resident. He returns to TJU upon completion of a urology oncology fellowship at the Carolinas Medical Center.

What does Dr. Mark’s work mean for patients? While Dr. Mark enjoys teaching students and resi-dents, he hopes to continue to work as a clinical trialist in advancing human health through advocating the use of clinical trials, which lead to the development and dissemination of optimal methods and practices in clinical trials, and the edu-cation of clinical trial pro-fessionals. Additionally, he hopes to continue improv-ing Jefferson’s tradition of expert cancer care with an interest in minimally inva-sive surgery.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about Dr. Mark?“I grew up in England and have had several atypi-cal jobs. I worked as a hod carrier for masons during college, in which we built several movie theaters and shopping centers during my summer vacations.”

Congrats to the Department of Urology as one of the JeffConnectTM award winners for the Klasko Departmental Challenge Award. Every urology faculty member completed 12 or more scheduled telehealth visits this fiscal year. Special congrats to Dr. Edouard Trabulsi as one of the top JUP docs with 51 telehealth visits logged for the year. Also, thanks to telehealth taskmaster John Davis whose efforts helped secure this honor. Pictured are (left-right): Dr. Judd Hollander, Associate Dean for Strategic Health Initiatives, Dr. Deborah Glassman (who accepted the award on behalf of Dr. Gomella), Dr. Steve Klasko and Dr. William Keane, Chair of Otolaryngology.

Drs. J. Ryan Mark, Mark Hurwitz and Jean Hoffman-Censtis represented the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) by leading a panel discussion on urothelial carcinoma at the Northeastern Pennsylvania Integrated Network Cancer Program’s Update in Bladder Cancer Symposium. Local urologists from Delta Medix, members of the Jefferson Urology Network and Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center networks presented several of their more challenging cases to the panel at the meeting, which was well attended by local physicians, nurses and medical students from The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton. Several key clinical trials available at SKCC were highlighted during the discussions: a phase II trial of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in upper tract urothelial carcinoma, and an upcoming phase III trial of recombinant Adenovirus-INFa/Syn3 gene therapy for BCG refractory superficial bladder cancer.

The panel discussion was followed by a very special award ceremony where Vice President Joe Biden accepted the INCP Beau Biden Award for his leadership of the historic Moonshot plan. In an emotional and inspiring acceptance speech, Mr. Biden discussed his son’s fight with cancer, and expressed his sincere gratitude to the oncology nurses at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for the compassion they showed his family during the final days of Beau’s

fight. He presented an overview of his plan to accelerate cancer research with an open exchange of information in the scientific community and an emphasis on a multi-disciplinary approach to cancer research.

The evening concluded with an update on immunotherapies for bladder cancer presented by Dr. Hoffman-Censits in which she emphasized the landmark Imvigor210 study that she presented at GU ASCO 2016.

Resident News

Jefferson Urology welcomed two former residency alumni, Drs. Daniel Cole and Shaukat Qureshi (pictured left with Drs. Scott Hubosky and Kelly Healy) to the “Advanced Endourological Training Program” on Thursday, September 29 to Friday, September 30, 2016. The course was directed by Dr. Demetrius H. Bagley and included both didactic and live-case demonstrations by Drs. Healy and Hubosky.

In this small group learning experience, participants gained exposure to advanced ureteroscopic techniques for the treatment of nephrolithiasis and upper tract urothelial carcinoma.

Right: Dr. Qureshi poses next to his resident photo.

Two of our junior residents, Drs. Hong Truong and Tomy Perez (both PGY-3) recently attended an endourology training course sponsored by Boston Scientific. The resident course was held in Boston on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

“It was an invaluable experience attending the Stone Institute ureteroscopy course,” said Dr. Perez. “Leaders of the field gave us practical tips on maneuvering difficult ureters, lithotripsy and preventing/managing complications, which will come in very useful for the rest of my training and career. The mix of lectures, case discussions and hands-on training was excellent, and no time was wasted on information that was not relevant to practicing endourology.”

Dr. Amar J. Raval is a chief resident post-graduate year (PGY-6) in the Department of Urology at Jefferson. He attended Florida State University College of Medicine and chose TJUH Department of Urology because of its outstanding reputation for resident training supported by

a diverse group of fellowship-trained faculty and allied health providers.

“I look forward to working with an inspiring and accomplished network of residents, nurse practitioners, GU [genitourinary] operating room staff and urologic faculty on a daily basis,” said Dr. Raval.

Dr. Raval shared a tidbit about himself that not many know about him.

“I play the harmonium, a classical Indian instrument, which I learned to play at the age of 13. Although an unusual skill to master, it was definitely a killer with the ladies (just kidding)!”

Meet Resident Amar J. Raval, MDBorn in Canada, raised in Florida, Dr. Raval may be a long way from home but is happy to be at Jeff.

Robots: Changing Lives, Health Care

The growing use of robotics is transforming health care in amazing ways. Dr. Costas Lallas, Director of Robotic Surgery and Surgical Simulation at Jefferson, shared his insights about robotic surgery and the applications of this technology in a fascinating presentation titled, “Robotic Surgery at Jefferson: Where We Started and Where We Are Headed,” at the Franklin Institute in October. A tour of the brand-new Robot Revolution exhibit followed Dr. Lallas’s presentation, featuring interaction with robots that have rarely been shown to the public.

Dr. Lallas’s primary practice is urologic oncology with a clinical and research focus on minimally invasive surgery, in particular robotic surgery. As the director of Robotic Surgery for Jefferson, Dr. Lallas works with a system that has four robotic surgical systems and collectively performs approximately 400 robotic surgical cases per year. He also serves as director of Surgical Simulation for the Rector Clinical Skills and Simulation Center of SKMC, and has a distinct interest in simulation-based resident and fellow training in robotic technology.
