From our Pastor:
Coronavirus has limited our activities in so many ways, as individuals, families, and as a church. Yes, the
good news is that God has shown us how to be Jesus’ people despite the pandemic. Yes, we have learned
new skills in this time that we can take into the post-pandemic future. Yes, this crisis has put a lot of things
into perspective about our lives. But we should be honest in naming that it has also hindered us. We can’t
flourish in the same ways we usually have. And this creates the all-too-human experience of anxiety. In this
case, it’s often anxiety over what we can’t do. So let’s turn to the Bible for guidance!
Writer Michelle J. Morris has been keen to remind us that the Gospel of Matthew has often been called the
“go-and-do” gospel. It contains Jesus’ famous “Therefore, go” command (Matthew 28:19a CEB translation).
It’s a gospel for people with a kinetic energy…the desire to take off running. She calls these people
“Mattheans” because they remind her of Matthew’s emphasis. Maybe you are a Matthean. Maybe you know
someone who is. Mattheans are “disciples who like for their faith to be expressed in concrete things checked
off the list.” When they can’t “therefore, go” their energies can end up being turned in on themselves where
they create anxiety.
While there are lots of things for Mattheans to do right now and plenty of churches like ours are doing them,
there are Mattheans in vulnerable age groups or with compromised immune systems who are having to con-
stantly remind themselves that the best thing they can do to help others is stay home. So the “go-and-do”
energy has to be redirected to something they can do like checking in with others over the phone or sewing
masks. Mattheans have to look to God for some holy creative inspiration to help them through this time.
Morris concludes with good advice for Mattheans: “Make yourself a list of the things you can do. Focus on
that. Check those things off your list and celebrate the new ways we are figuring out to serve our world.
Take the actions you can take, and then rest up. There will be much to do on the other side of these
isolated days.” (Morris, M., 2020. What Do You Mean I Can't Do Anything About It: Matthean Anxiety.
MinistryMatters.com.)
However this pandemic is affecting you, know that you are constantly on my mind, that I pray for you, and
that I know that God is able to do all things including seeing us through this very tough time!
-Rev. Taylor Mills
Ways We Are Responding
The greatest way we are serving our community in this time is by social distancing. Within the confines of
social distancing here are some of the special ways we are also responding:
assisting in the production of home-made masks
staying in touch with our most vulnerable populations
encouraging a "Buddy Program" to combat isolation and loneliness
working with local organizations and churches to combat hunger
creatively incorporating the congregation into online worship and activities they can do in the current
climate (like the drive-around Easter Egg Hunt).
Ann Street UMC is invited to support St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s Food Pantry
Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Drop off St Paul's Church Office Building Back Porch For general guidance go to https://www.stjohnvillapark.org/files/docs/Food_Pantry_Wish_List.pdf for a list of suggested non-perishables. Current specific local needs include grits, canned pork and beans, canned peas, boxed instant potatoes and orange juice. And please remember it is imperative that all donors maintain safe practices of social distancing.

Praise God for the willingness of people to step forward to donate during these challenging times. A special thank you goes out to our wonderful volunteers. Please continue to keep in your prayers the American Red Cross Blood Drive staff, the blood donors, the volunteers, and the patients receiving the blood. Our next blood drive at Ann Street is Monday, June 1.
Intern
It is our pleasure to announce that Griffen Cope of Birmingham, Alabama will be our 2020 summer intern from
Duke Divinity School! He is a United Methodist student who has completed his first year of seminary. Duke's
current plan is for interns to work with their church remotely/virtually for June and then be resident in July and
August. Many thanks to Dianne Gagnon for volunteering to be Griffin's host when he arrives and to The Duke
Endowment for funding Griffin's internship with us!
Check Your Email!
Due to recent changes in how email programs (like Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) organize your email, the weekly mes-
sage from the church might be going into your "Promotions" or "Spam" folder. Don't let your email program
keep you from seeing our weekly (and sometimes twice-weekly) updates during this critical time when we are
relying on electronic communication! If you have not seen our email in your Inbox recently, please reach out
to Rachel Wyman Dawson at [email protected] or through the office at 252-728-4279.

Writing Cards
The sermon for May 17 will focus on our Christian work of doing good in the world. In conjunction
with that message and as part of our "interactive" worship during this time, please write a note or
make a card of general encouragement for someone. Then mail to Rhoda Allred, our pastoral
assistant for visitation, at 103 Gerald St., Beaufort, NC 28516. Rhoda will then send it on to some-
one who needs it.

Pentecost
When joining us for worship on May 31 -- whether it's online or in-person --

when the Holy Spirit was given to the church!
Volunteering During Coronavirus
Thank you to everyone who signed up online to help the vulnerable during this uncertain time!
As needs arise, we will reach out to you. In addition, if you (or someone you know) has any need
for a volunteer (someone to go to the grocery store, run an errand, etc.) please contact Rhoda
Allred at 252-241-3487.
Are you starting to feel the effects of social distancing? Ann Street UMC is starting a "Buddy
Program." Sign up if you want a buddy, or want to be a buddy. You can also call the
church office to sign up: 252-728-4279. Once you get paired with your buddy, you can decide
what form of communication works best. Phone calls, texts, Facetime, or snail mail.
Have you been wondering how you can help in some small way to combat the spread of the
Coronavirus? A group of area seamstresses and crafters have gone into "home production" to
sew much needed facial masks to donate to Carteret Health Care and other health care workers/
providers. The team, #Masksforourhealthcareworkers, has enough 100% cotton fabric and other
materials to make the masks, but they have a limited supply of "tie" materials, and cannot buy
anymore in Carteret Co. If you have 1/4" UNUSED/NEW elastic or binding tape at home in your
sewing kit or craft stash, and are willing to donate it, bring it to The Piggly Wiggly or Ace Hard-
ware in Beaufort. Look for the blue donation boxes. PLEASE DONATE! For further info or to
make a donation, you can call Marilyn Bernauer @ 252 241 7568.
Ann Street UMC Preschool
Due to COVD-19, Mayor Newton has issued a Shelter in Place order, and a decision to close the
preschool was made. The preschool closed March 16th. We are excited to announce that the
preschool received new flooring during the closure! We plan to reopen the preschool on May 4th.
Thanks to my Church Family and Friends for all you did for me while I was recuperating from pneumonia. The calls, visits, food, cards, and mostly the prayers, it all meant so much to me. Bless you!! Lou Hunt
